BFG gifts GTX 285 and GTX 295 cards with self-contained liquid cooling
Believe it or not, this is far from the first time we've heard of a liquid cooled GPU; in fact, NVIDIA was tossing the idea around way back in 2006, when Quake III and Unreal Tournament were still top titles in the FPS realm. BFG Technologies, which currently holds the greatest name for a graphics card company ever, has today introduced its GeForce GTX 285 H2O+ and GeForce GTX 295 H2OC cards, both of which boast ThermoIntelligence Advanced Cooling Solutions (read: self-contained liquid cooling systems). BFG swears that both cards are completely maintenance free, with the GPUs kept around 30°C cooler under load as compared to standard air cooled models. There's no mention of pricing just yet, but both should be available any moment at NewEgg. Good luck resisting the sudden urge to upgrade.

Well, if your wallet's worth anything, you could start by selling it...
Just want to mention that Quake 3 and UT were far from top titles in 2006...
I just wanted to point that out. Those games were released circa 1999...
I think that was just exaggeration.
maybe he meant Quake4 and UT2004? Maybe he is not a FPS gamer....
Damn right! Oblivion was the bee's knees way back then!
Are you kidding?
Unreal Tournament kicked ridiculous amounts of ass. I had both Quake 3 and UT, and I can't even calculate the amount of time I spent on those loaded servers of UT playing Last man Standing INSTAGIB.
@Quantumphysics - If you were playing a 1999 FPS multiplayer in 2006, you would be the last man standing.
@David S: I still play Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition.
And finish with your Kidney.
wtfux
that's loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong
inb4that's what she said.
I love my water cooled gtx275 (custom kit) it keeps my GPU 25°C cooler (23% overclocked under load vs stock cooler and stock clock) while being extremely silent. (loudest noise in my system is a standard 7200 HD) This kit would def. be interesting for less technical people who wants one of the faster GFX cards around but hate those screaming monsters
Wow, that thing looks like something hanging off of the Borg from Star Trek. Good thing it goes IN the machine.
Kidney's are waaay to expensive. A left nut would suffice.
Yes but how will the graphics compareto such devices as the iphone?
Still, the grapics card is hampered by its cheap approach to processing and compressing the footage it's taking in -- despite its limitations, we'd say the iPhone 3GS is besting most cheap graphics processor on this front, motion just looks much more fluid.
Hey, ofcourse the iPhone can play the latest games or HD video fluidly on 1920*1200 or higher resolutions.....
Rendering a low res screen like the iPhone requires a whole lot less processing power than at decent resolution.
Obvious troll is obvious.
You know that iphone trolls have played out when people don't even bother to vote them down.

well considering that the gtx 295 is already $530 at the egg, I can imagine that these will be close to reasonable....sigh..
WIN!
...on the recession antidote
...but I want the ATI 5000x2 series
...WIN =)
Don't but a high end graphics card until we're 2 or 3 months into windows 7 and the first generation of DX11 cards are available.
I second that! I'm definitely waiting!
Two words:
Driver Update
@neofolklore
Two Words:
Won't work.
The GPU chip itself has to be designed for the new instruction sets. In some very rare cases a driver update would add some additional DX compatibility (I think the 9.0 b/c releases maybe?), but generally you have to have a new GPU for that. You will need a GTX 300 series or Radeon HD 5000 series for DX11.
But really I don't see it as a big deal. DX10 adoption is still fairly low. So many games are cross-platform now, and it's not always cost-effective to make enhancements for the PC versions, so they're limited to the 3-4 year old graphic card tech in the consoles.
Nvidias 190.38 win7 x64 drivers seem to be running DX11.
The drivers don't run DX11. DX11 is an API that's part of the operating system. There are currently no Nvidia graphics chips that have DX11 features, so whether or not the drivers are DX11 compatible, is irrelevant. DX11 is an API that interfaces with the graphics chip to use certain code capabilities.
too bad there's only 3 games left on the PC worth mentioning
unless you are CUDA rendering or folding @ home, just get an XBOX360
Interesting concept.. (replying to yourself, not the other thing)
oh so beautiful~~~
I curious how they keep it from developing air in the lines, nor how they keep it from over pressurizing. I don't see a reservoir or an expansion chamber.
looks like they're using technology from CoolIT Systems... check out their webpage for more info. These cooling devices are solid and do the trick for cheap (ie.. domino ALC unit).
The Coolit Domino ALC actually is a horrible system. It breaks to easy because it uses plastic fittings vs the metal fittings used on custom systems. I had an Domino ALC System and it broke after a month's use. The initial impression may be good but it is rather fragile. Reviews only test on the spot but not long term durability.
If this thing manages to bring the 75C max temp you get from the stock cooler down to 45C, I'll be mighty impressed; my 9000-series cards IDLE at 45C.
is it bad if your wallet is worth more than the money it contains?
I mistook the title of this article as them GIVING AWAY one of each for free. Bad wording, Engadget. Very mean of you :(
"BFG Technologies, which currently holds the greatest name for a graphics card company ever,"
Your not serious right?
EVGA>BFG
He meant just as the name itself, not the reputation behind it.
BFG Tech is way funnier and more memorable than EVGA, I don't even know what EVGA stands for.
I'm not knocking either as a brand though, I'm sure they both make great cards.
Wow. Soon my car will be electric and my computer will have a water pump.
Why would we not believe it?
Someday it would be nice if the battle over GPU's was done with more and more efficient and cooler processors. Instead of overclocking the living hell, and just cramming more crap onto the board. ATI and Nvidia both are guilty of this and should be slapped around. Yes a fast high performance card is important. But if the lights in your house dim for 3 seconds as you start up a graphics heavy game and you can put a fire screen saver on your display and roast marshmallows over your GPU then what's the point.
I wish the equivalent of the Intel Core series would come out by Nvidia or ATI.
My kidney's ARE graphics cards.
gtx 295 is $850..... daaayumn.
