Creative Zii EGG gutted for expanded FCC report
Now that the cat's out of the bag on Creative's Android-powered Zii EGG, the FCC has gone ahead and released its full report on the touchscreen handheld, after giving us a teaser early last month. Now online are external and internal photos, for the gadget fiend who likes to see products gutted, and a user guide that conspicuously fails to mention its "Android" or "Plaszma" platforms at any point in the guide. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but we've got hope someone can cram a 3G chipset in that array of circuitry. Hop on through the read link to peruse the expanded report for yourself.

I want this !!!
Notably, this almost confirms a consumer model directly from Creative very soon- http://creative.techinhiding.com/2009/08/zii-manual-and-more-pics-dropped-by-the-fcc-confirming-consumer-model/ has a few images, including one where the "Audience" portion of the manual says "This Zii device user guide is written for users who possess an average level of competency with electronic products. The document assumes that users are familiar with basic music playback, and photo taking or video recording. " Not something that would be in a developer's edition (the EGG).
Also, the manual was written in March 2009, so it leads me to believe an imminent announcement is forthcoming from Creative.
Wow, I really hope the consumer model is priced similarly to iPod touch because with Android I definately think it could seriously compete considering the superior hardware.
So....Um....It's a 1st gen iPhone?
Except with all the cool stuff the iPhone doesn't have- Android support, a hardware camera button, and probably better 3G reception (even without the 3G radio).
with android, a powerful graphics processor, 1080p output, an SDHC card slot, dual cameras (HD and VGA)
and one thing that nobody has properly stressed.
GPS. REAL GPS. Not that A-GPS shit. I mean Garmin-style GPS. Doesn't require internet.
HAHAHA! Yeah, like who want to make phone calls, right? And how often are you going to use that whiz-bang 1080p output? I can count how many times I've used a PMP/iPod/iPhone/device on no hands. SDHC slot? Ok, I'll give you that. Dual Cameras? Why, again? Meh.
First of all, it's not even a phone. Second, just because you don't want the features it offers, doesn't mean the other 7 billion of us don't.
GBeatz - no one properly stressed the A-GPS because the iphone has real GPS that works without an internet connection. The internet connection speeds acquisition, but isn't mandatory.
I bet this plays divx straight out of the box.
I emailed Creative about the Egg. They said it would be release to the public in Oct.
No mention of a consumer edition?
@Theli
I'm hoping that's what "released to the public" means.
i'd get a Pandora over this, if only the Pandora were out, or coming out any time soon (it won't).
There are some horribly weak signs that Creative may be working on a phone.

Personally I think there's a good 80% chance that they will slap a 3G modem into the device at some point. It just kind of makes sense.
I don't think Creative will per say, but their OEM strategy allows for someone like Sprint to order up a version and slip a CDMA radio in there and rebadge it with a crappy name with the hard work done by Creative, like HTC has done in the past.
Such an awsome deivce but they should have gutted the screen and replaced it with a higher res screen. Why do these guys build high potential devices with medicore screens?
Cost/benefit. If they do put a higher resolution screen in there, it costs more money. They have to weigh that against how many sales they'll get/lose due to the better screen but higher price. It outputs to HD, so a screen size that deserves higher resolutions can be supplied with it.
I didn't know the FCC used metric units.
Much like the rest of the sane western world, i mean Europe, anyone still using fractions of inches needs their heads examined.
...why change?...
...as it is i can get three grupels to the pennyfarthing...
Couldn't agree with you more Major4Play. I just didn't want to offend anybody.
can I get one with an SDXC slot? :)
(spends a completely improper amount of time ogling card slot and the words "USB DRIVE")
Will the consumer edition ship with android or that stupid looking plazsma OS?
I sure hope it's android.
I'm sure even if it does only come with Plazma it will be fairly easy to install Android on.
Is this going to have a user removeable battery?
Firzt vee crack open Zee Egg...
I just really want to start getting figures on this such as battery life and the quality of the cameras (the term HD is so vague and only really gives you a bottom limit of how good [or bad] the camera could be!).
Well one of my questions are answered, only a 1.3 MP camera (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/technology/2009/07/31/creative-zii-egg-filmed-in-the-wild-115875-21562346/). Damn, I was really hoping I could get a better camera than the rumored Touch will have...
.. but it can record 720p videos... trust me..
