T-Mobile myTouch 3G storming retail stores today for $199.99 on contract
You knew good and well this day was coming, but if you're sick and tired of lusting after your proactive neighbor's myTouch 3G, today's your lucky day. The highly customizable HTC handset will be widely available starting this morning in T-Mobile USA retail outlets, partner locations and online, and if you're really looking to celebrate, you can dart over to San Francisco at noon as 100 skydivers take a leap of faith in order to generate buzz, relieve some stress and put food on the table. Speaking of cheddar, you best bring $199.99 if you plan on snagging one on a two-year agreement, and you'll do everyone there a favor if you've already settled on black, merlot or white beforehand.

I can't wait!
i can
Did you mean 'I can't wait for the Touch Pro 2, which was delayed out of fears it would hurt sales of the MyTouch'?
No comparo between the two really, two different types of users, just one more annoyed than the other at Tmob right now. ;)
So let me get this: it has less hardware than the G1 but costs more? wtf?!
Thanks TMO, but you can keep your amputated G1.
Yay! Going ASAP to get one!
Finally, after months of feeling like a neglected stepchild, we're finally getting it in the US!
I'm ordering it online though, rather than going to the store. T-mo gives 4,500 points, if I sign up for 2 years, via BofA Worldpoints:
https://rewardsshoppingmall.bankofamerica.com/worldpoints/jsp/merchant_details.jsp?plc=783666
If it's the same price either way, I figure, why not earn some points while I'm at it?
I also ordered a custom skin from Skinit.com and used an online coupon "SUMMERSKINS" to get $5 bucks off the order.
Hope this helps someone.
I have to wait until thursday to get it. Im crossing my fingers that it doesn't sell out, but i dont believe it will.
If anything. they might not have any more in black and i end up settling for white. screw merlot
Why would you settle for any device? That's crazy.
Does anyone know if you have to purchase a data plan with the $199 premium + 2-year contract?? I hope not.. this thing has WiFi for crying out loud.
Yes, you have to have the MyTouch/Android data plan.
Still waiting on AT&T to get an Android phone...maybe once my contract's up.
And no, there is no T-Mobile where I live.
How come you guys haven't posted a review yet?!
Going out to get this in white in a few hours once my local T-Mobile store opens =]
Does this offer any advantages over the G1? 3.5mm headphone jack?
No 3.5mm headphone jack, but it offers a wider a wider range of customizability, 512MB of ROM [opposed to the G1s 256] a sleeker design IMO, better battery life, and the oh-so-wonderful advantage of taking $50 more from your pocket.
I got a chance to play with one in a T-Mo store in Seattle last week. Hard to tell from the pics, but the phone is really much thinner and lighter than a G1. The one I saw was merlot, and it was a nice quality looking and feeling phone, I won't be too upset if I can't get black.
As mentioned, the myTouch has a bigger ROM, which is nice. Otherwise, the form factor and larger battery are probably the biggest *pluses* here. As a previous G1 owner, I enjoy the myTouch phone much more. In fact, I'm with T-Mobile here... I think the myTouch has a better chance of making a "splash" in the mobile phone market. An actual competitor to the iPhone and Pre.
Just my $.02
(Note: adding the HTC virtual keyboard is a *must* for this phone!)
yea, I don't know if I could look at this thing for 2 years. It's hideous.
When is the HERO being released in the US for t-mo?
The Hero isn't coming to T-Mobile, or at least there are no plans for it too.
The Hero has a lot of evidence for a Sprint US release around October 11th.
the hero have the same specs as the mytouch just the upgraded ram and 3.5 mm jack once the mytouch gets rooted it can run sense ui.....
Who the heck would buy this in this economy when one could get an iPhone for $99!
People that don't like Apple or AT&T, people that want a phone that's a little smaller than an iPhone, people tha want to use Google Voice with all the bells and wistles.
do you not see the fallacy in that stupid comment when there are FREE phones?
Everything that MeanSpyvie said, and not wanting to pay any early termination fee
or activation fee
or pay more for the same amount of minutes
and AT&T has shit service where i live, which is sad considering its a city of 350,000
How about the price of the ATT plans Minimum of what $100. Thanks, but no thanks.
Considering I can get a monthly plan that's half the price of the iPhone's, paying an extra $100 initially saves me an extra thousand bucks over the length of the contract... not a bad deal in this economy at all...
I think you meant $1800 for that iPhone over the life of your contract.
A person who does not want to spend $200 a phone to get out of T-Mobile contract and go through the hassle of a credit check, less reliable phone service, and the bad rep that comes with running an iPhone on AT&T's less than stellar network. But maybe thats just me.
where's my facebook app? give it to me. it's mine after all
calm down it comes out this week
Anyone know what full retail on this is without a contract extension?
$400
Actually it is $499.99.
It is $400 on a Partial Upgrade with a 2yr contract.
I have a t-mobile contract that I will never be able to get out of because it is such a good deal ($80 for 2 phones, unlimited text on both and data on one), but they are pulling up the rear in terms of phones. I currently use an unlocked iphone (no 3g where I live anyway) and am not super satisfied, but i'd rather have this than any of the phones they offer (I had a g1 for about a month and liked it, but the iphone is a better experience... especially unlocked). With my contract where it is, I would gladly throw down full retail for a decent phone that had t-mobile 3g (I do travel a lot), but paying $200 for a phone that is really 1-2 generations behind the rest of the market makes me tired. I get it, it is their business model, but I don't have to be happy with it. I wish I lived in europe (except for all the socialism).
There's just not enough upgrades for me. First, it still has the same freaking size screen as every other Android phone released (3.2" instead of a more desireable 3.5" screen). A larger screen makes the font so much easier to read & allows for larger icons. No 3.5mm head phone jack is just baffling. Also, I hate that I can't listen to music while charging my phone without a special adapter, which I hear is available but I haven't seen one. It also appears that they haven't done a think to allow users to increase the desktop or apps font size.
No wonder the iPhone has done so well, there are to many phones out there that just haven't gone the extra mile to set themselves apart. Other than the android OS, which I love, this phone just doesn't excite me due to the numerous short comings that haven't been remedied.
Someone please explain why on one has increased the screen size, offered larger fonts or included a normal head phone jack yet.?
Bluetooth headphones my friend..... i use them on my tilt while streaming pandora radio WHILE charging the phone... get the moto s9's and you have a great work out partner too..
Blatant Grovelling : If you have the HTC G1 or mytouch 3G then try the game I wrote - barcode beasties . Let me know what you think as well. Working on multiplayer today... Testing for the beta testers hopefully within a few weeks. Oh and don't forget to give me 5* and mention engadget in your comment !
If the touch pro 2 does end up being $349 on a 2 year contract, I may just have to go with this.
The MDA was $350 for one year if I remember correctly, and so was the Wing, so that price would be consistent, with even less inflation than the price of a McDonald's doublecheeseburger over the same time. Reports are the TP2 will be $300 for two years, so 100 bucks more. I'll be getting the TP2, since I'm looking for a business phone (with lots of extras of course), but this looks like it should work for many out there, especially with the actual options in color outside of poobrown for the TP2.
so no proximity sensor ........WTF ? what a waist of battery power ! and comfortable use of the phone !
are you serious? yeah, I want to hold a brightly light, warm screen up to my face. lame!
when you put it to your face the screen locks and dims....
I might pick it off the clearance rack in a few months. What we need is a Hero, and we need it right now.
i agree... but unless you either switch to sprint on october 11th or order a hero unlocked from the UK, you'll be waiting a while... this is my quandary right now... mytouch, or somehow get the hero unlocked.. if you're on facebook, become a fan of the hero and you'll get alot of info through that method....
Does this do Exchange as well as NitroDesk TouchDown did on the G1 ?
I was told by the t-mo rep yesterday that it does handle exchange. Slick little phone, might trade in the BB and get one.
Anyone with the device can confirm it just support exchange email, or does it sync even contacts, calendar and tasks ? I saw some reviews stating only emails are available..
just bought mine last night. cant wait to get it!
Not bad......
I'm definitelly waiting for the TP2. Just wish it didnt come in that doodoo brown color. All phones should stick to black, silver, or white.
Also just got some information on the pricing for the TP2. Dont know how accurate it is but it's something.
http://www.phonenews.com/t-mobile-to-launch-htc-touch-pro-2-on-august-12th-8538/
Update: T-Mobile has officially announced availability of the Touch Pro 2 for August 12th and PhoneNews.com can confirm that pricing will be set at $199.99 after new 2 year agreement and data plan requirement.
Three cheers for using the upgrade available on one of the other lines on my family plan to grab a G1 now, then using mine next year when an Android phone worth calling an upgrade is available (or perhaps switching carriers if it's available but T-Mo's not offering it).
This thing has exactly one benefit over the G1, so long as you're willing to root it, and that's the bigger battery. It actually is a meaningful difference, as the G1's ability to take advantage of any aftermarket batteries, whether a small boost to 1400 up to 2600 mAh, seems to be just abysmal. Otherwise, every new benefit of the MyTouch is also available in custom Android builds. For that matter, most things available to Hero users are available in custom builds of the OS as well.
Wake me up when something something Tegra something 3.7" capacitive something something something 4 row keyboard something 3.5 mm something memory cards bigger than 16 Gb.
