Ask Engadget: Best 20- to 24-inch LCD monitor with HDMI / DVI?
We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Geoff, who is hoping to find a new LCD to serve two masters.
The glaring omission of a price limit here has us a bit scared, but we get the feeling Sir Geoff isn't looking to shatter the bank. Keep in mind that a speedy refresh rate will be needed for the gaming aspect, and it needs an HDMI and DVI socket at the very least. Get those gears a-grindin'!
"I have a MacBook Pro and an Xbox 360 and I would like to get a 20- to 24-inch display that will support both devices. The speakers should be inbuilt, or there should be an aux out on the display to hook up external speakers. Help! Please!"

Dell 2408WFP. End of story.
Yessir this is the correct answer.
Absolutely. Well worth the extra money.
What about lag? My 2407WFP-HC has unbearable input lag, making it unable to play games. Watching video is good, as long as I delay the audio.
@Geqxon
They fixed the 2407 lag in 2408. The initial 2408s had some minor lag issues which were later fixed in rev A01. I have it and it's perfectly fine.
Dell doesn't have any of the older revisions in stock, but if you buy it second-hand or from another store, make sure you don't buy the old rev.
Dell U2410
IPS FTW
Just got an HP lp2475w: H-IPS ~$550, 2 DVI, HDMI, USB hub, best bang for the buck seems to be the consensus online.
OP is right. Dell. End of story.
Hey, that's what I have! And I LOVE it!
Have the Dell 2408WFP, wouldn't trade it for the world. Works great for gaming, and the color gamut is great for photo editing. Tons of inputs, I use it with my xbox 360, PC, laptop (mac), all at the same time (2 DVI, 1 HDMI). It's even got a displayport input, and the macbook air uses mini-displayport out, but I haven't been able to find a mini-to-regular displayport cable :/
But the monitor is a dream come true.
Another data point / vote for the 2408WFP. It's gorgeous. It's fast. It's huge. Get it. You'll be happy.
I use it with my PC and Xbox, it works great. BUY IT
Another +1 from me. I have the 2408WFP (rev A01) and have experienced no noticeable lag and great colour. The red pops a bit too much but I'm not processing photos for clients (just me!) so that's not a big deal. Currently using it as a Full-HD TV screen in my room. Heaps of inputs, including the ones you requested, and DisplayPort to boot.
Got mine for AUD ~$680, selling now for AUD ~$800. Still good value at full price.
P.S. Seems that if I was buying again, I might have to consider the HP LP2475W...
Dell is just a rebadge, so who's the actual designer?
I get asked this a lot and my 23.5" worth is...
Since the question isn't colour accuracy or gamut but price, size and pixels the brand is moot since all the options in that category come out of the same couple of factories. DVI and HDMI, 1920x1080, with 16:9 aspect and is currently on special. In Aus it's the one around the $360AUD price point at the moment.
For roughly the same price ($700) as the dell, he could get a 42" 1080p Panasonic plasma which has the built in speakers he is looking for.

Correct you are. Using one as we speek. The Clip on speekers work great as well.
yep, i was about to say it. For my parallel:
back in spring 07, I knew I was migrating to another country so i wouldnt keep my PC. at the time i had a 2001wfp. I also had recently gotten my x360. I didnt want to lug a heavy speaker system around either and wouldnt have a TV. So my plan was to travel with simply this:
- macbook pro
- xbox 360
- creative 2.0 speakers
- 24" screen.
and being that I knew dell had the best panels and bang for buck, i watched, waited, compared and the 2407HC ediction monitor came out.
2 years later, let me tell you, the setup is beautiful, it works great and is easy to move. the connections:
- macbook pro: DVI -> 2407 / 3.5mm jack to speakers
- x360: component -> 2407 / rca -> 3.5mm to speakers (which i swap plugs)
and you can switch back and forth during loading screens. and now the 2408 is even better.
I have the Dell 2405FPW from 4 years ago. I have never had any issues with it, and love it. Had my 360 hooked to it back in the day, until i bought a Plasma... Which, btw... you can get for around the same price as the 2408WFP...
Also, if you are on a real budget... consider the Dell S2409W. Its only about $220 and has HDMI. Quality wont be as high as the 2408, but it is still good... and it will even have a greater display area for 1080p video...
Dell UltraSharp for sure!
UltraSharp 2408WFP 24-inch Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor with Height Adjustable Stand
it has:
CONNECTIVITY
High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
Digital Visual Interface - Digital (DVI-D) with High Definition Content Protection (HDCP)
DisplayPort
Video Graphics Array (VGA)
Component Video
Separate Video (S-Video)
Composite Video
I just ordered one of these and it's due to be delivered tomorrow. Replacing a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW. Can I hook up my Mac Mini and my Dell Precision T7500 to it and switch between the two with the "Source" button? I sure hope that I can. Thanks.
you left out that it has terrible lag, which just wont work in fast paced FPS games. For 100$ more you can get yourself an IPS paneled HP 2475. It is quick, has more accurate colors, the BEST viewing angles, and overall comes off as the better monitor if you have the coin.
I agree here with the Dell WFP monitors because of all the options. These monitors have better specs than the apple displays minus the hi price. I've had ASUS and Apple and the Dell WFP series blows them away hands down.
2408WFP doesn't have lag issues like the 2407WFP edition did. No lag at all, in fact, even at 100fps in L4D.
+1 to the 2408WFP - I use this for my Xbox 360 and plan to get a miniDP - DVI for my MacBook once I start my Graphic Design course. A++++
I wouldn't bother with the U2410. IPS typically have a much lower response time than VA panels, plus you should be able to get the 2408WFP cheaper once it is released where you live ;)
Not to mention the colour gamut with the two models is virtually the same.
You can! Huzzah!!!
The Apple LED Cinema Display.
Oh wait, yea... cause Apple is gay like that.
i have the Acer H213H monitor. HMDI, DVI, VGA. native 1080p all for less than $200. works extremly well for gaming.

I use the 23" variation of that monitor, the H233H. I love the quality. HDMI is a nice feature too. My 360 has never felt so at home.

i got the Asus VH236H four months back, 23" 1080p, HDMI, 2 ms, i love it.
Have the 23" version and love it. Built in speakers are a bonus. Really crisp with great response time.
im looking at the asus vw2464
2 ms response
hdmi
dvi
and vga
has audio in and out
1920 by 1080p
200 bucks till tomorrow on newegg
This would be my recommendation as well. For the price, it can't be beat.
I just picked up this exact monitor a month ago for a few bucks more than the current Newegg price and I LOVE it. The sound isn't really that bad for in-monitor speakers either. Using both DVI and HDMI (mac-mini and TV) and both work well. I buy 22" Acers for everyone at work but I think I've found a new favorite.
Oh yah. I got mine a few months ago on Amazon for $180. I have the same setup as the OP -- MacBook Pro and an Xbox 360. Works great for both.
I would not get a 16:9 monitor. Websites are meant to be displayed on a 16:10 panel. I would go for a 1920 x 1200 24"
I've got this monitor as well. Great for gaming (Crysis looks amazing on this thing at 1080p), great for general use, and much cheaper than most competition. The audio is about as well as can be expected from a monitor.
well you did say best... HP Dreamcolor end of story.
No it doesn't have speakers its a monitor not a tv. If you want a tv then buy one don't ask for a monitor. What you really want is a hitachi ultra slim lcd, small footprint but it has speakers and tuner.
1.06 BILLION colors must look amazing... *sigh*

Reasons being? If you're using this for an Xbox 360 as well as a Monitor, the 16:9 Aspect ratio actually comes in handy, a computer can be told what aspect ratio it has, while a 360 on the other hand cannot. So basically what this means is with some of the other monitors it would either stretch out the 16:9 to 16:10 and give you a distorted image, or give you black bars on the top and bottom, which I know some people don't mind but you'd feel better knowing that every bit of your monitor was being used to the fullest potential. Also, the price is good, the specs are fantastic, and Asus makes a wonderful product, haven't had a problem with mine yet =D, plus the decent GTG response time means very little ghosting. Enjoy :)
Use the XBOX 360 VGA cable and you will have no issues with 16:10.
Most monitors let you change the settings for input to stretch the image or leave at the native resolution.
An Xbox 360 CAN do 16:10
I use an HDMI to DVI cable with my 360 and have told my console to display at 1680x1050 for my 22" AOC.
BenQ E2200HD.
Whatever you choose, make sure it's 16:9, not 16:10.
16x9 guarantees you fewer pixels. That's why monitor makers are flocking to it. It's cheaper for them to make.
You're far better off getting a 16:10 monitor, and letting your HD feed (if you even have one) employ some letterboxing, while getting the benefit of the extra pixels for everything else you do on the computer.
I have a 16:10 and a 16:9 I prefer 16:9 while working on the computer. But we all entitled to have an own preference. My recommendation would be go to a good brick and mortar store and check the different options out yourself.
Samsung T240HD = Monitor/1080pHDTV + built in speakers
/Thread
I agree - go with the Samsung touch of color series; great contrast ratio, HDMI, DVI, HDTV, plus a 3 year warranty, 5ms response time. I picked up one for cheap and wish I would have bought two. Listed at $300 on NewEgg.
I completely agree. I have the 22" version and if I didn't already have 22" HP w2207h (another good answer for this question but alas its VGA/HDMI not DVI/HDMI) it would make a great monitor
I have the T260HD (The 26" Version) and I second this series of monitors. 2 HDMI ports, DVI, VGA, Speakers, 1900x1200 (maybe higher) resolution, and ASTC Tuner.
