Ask Engadget: Best 20- to 24-inch LCD monitor with HDMI / DVI?
We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Geoff, who is hoping to find a new LCD to serve two masters.
The glaring omission of a price limit here has us a bit scared, but we get the feeling Sir Geoff isn't looking to shatter the bank. Keep in mind that a speedy refresh rate will be needed for the gaming aspect, and it needs an HDMI and DVI socket at the very least. Get those gears a-grindin'!
"I have a MacBook Pro and an Xbox 360 and I would like to get a 20- to 24-inch display that will support both devices. The speakers should be inbuilt, or there should be an aux out on the display to hook up external speakers. Help! Please!"

Ditto what @Guy Montag and a few others havesaid. The Dell 2408WFP. No lag issues, great color reproduction, and every input under the sun (HDMI, DisplayPort, 2 DVI, 1 VGA, component, etc) as well as a media reader.
If your employer has EPP w/ Dell even better as they warranty the monitor with advanced exchange (they'll swap it out before you ship it back).
i have a dell 2408wfp and its a great monitor, cant really complain about it apart from one factor, its pretty bulky for a monitor, a 24" imac is thinner and that has the computer in it as well!!
I havnt seen an hp 2475 in action so cant compare, but that was on the shortlist along with the dell when i was shopping for a monitor.
I absolutely love the black level in the 2408, its much better than any other monitor i have seen.
The Dell 2408WFP only has 6 sec response time :S
Yes, that is what PVA and IPS panels have currently. TN panels are very simple in terms of how they operate and can go from grey (they dont do black) to white in a short time. I have never noticed ghosting on my dell 2408wfp, and thats a 6ms PVA panel screen but what i have noticed is the colours dont shift with angle, the blacks are black and the viewing angle is only limited by the thickness of the bezel preventing you from seeing 180°
if you want 2ms response times you will have to put up with colour shifting, poor black levels and horrible viewing angles, especially vertical
I haven't heard that from any of those complaints from the people who own G24...
and it's $700 Canadian :O (UltraSharp 2408WFP)

Holy shit, is it really worth the $700 the specs on the G24 are better then that one and its only only like $350, they only way i would every get that is if I ever need that many inputs on a monitor and I don't and don't think I ever will.
Stop calling it "Ask Engadget", it's "As the readers".
I second this notion.
Dell SP2208WFP - 22" Glossy w/ 2MP Webcam, 2 USB ports on side, 2 on bottom, 1 HDMI, 1 DVI, 1 VGA, speaker attachment support... what more could you want?
I use the Samsung T240HD, works great for all my devices with 2 HDMI ports, a DVI port, a DSUB, Component HD, and Optical audio in and out.
I recently picked up a Samsung LN32B530 for this purpose.
Sure it's in the "TV" category (32in, 1080p), but it acts as an incredible monitor even through VGA. I use it for software development + tv. 700 bucks. Anybody else have similar?
Samsung 245T if you can afford it. I've had it for a year and it's been perfect.
I have an HP LP2475w IPS 24".
Great monitor 1900x1200, run it with my 17" mackbook pro.
Will run both @ 1900x1200 without any issues.
And I can turn off the 17" mbp monitor and run it with the full 512 instead of dual monitor splitting.
Full HD is awesome looking on it, and it has a boatload of hookups.
Several HDMI, DVI, etc etc.
Got it a while back for arounf $500, worth the extra cash over the other 24" cheaper non IPS LCDs.
A bonus is it also rotates to portrait/horizontal mode.
And since recently you can say no to any HP monitors they offer you.
Apparently nearly all of the business series screens have been turned into the worst imaginable. Ok, they all come with HD resolutions (1920*1200 and 1920*1080) but they only have a standard VGA port, virtually no adjustments for height etc, no swivel, and, the panels look totally bland and washed out.
I ordered some because we were very happy with a bunch of 2208h's and 2228h's we bought in the past, but I sent them back same day they arrived because they are so completely shit.
Definitely the 2408wfp. Just check SlickDeals obsessively until it pops up for around $400 and then go for it.
You Dell 2408WFP guys must be kidding me! You can't have a 6ms response time for gaming... It looks terrible. A response time that slow is okay for standard computer use, but not anything that scrolls quickly across the screen. That's where the lag all of these people are talking about comes in. If you're playing Xbox360 on the monitor, you're going to want something with 2ms response time, and a vertical refresh rate of at least 75Hz. If you can't afford that in a 24" monitor, get a 22", or instead get by with a 4~5ms response time. Just remember, you get what you pay for.
Does anyone have any suggestions about a monitor with a built in tv tuner?
Try reading the reactions of all the people saying "Samsung T2xx HD", they all have a tuner, lots of inputs, pretty good specs, a reasonable price point (unlike Dell) AND a built-in tuner (analog 'n digital)I'd go with the T2333HD, as that's the one i'm having, but hey, that might just be me.
LG 22LS4R http://gdgt.com/lg/22ls4r/
I'm really liking the Dell 2408WFP.
Calibration is a little tricky on it but worth the effort.
Love all the inputs and usb outs.
Portrait mode and adjustable stand are awesome.
I paid just over $400 new with all the offers from Dell. Great deal.
I've got mine connected to my unibody Macbook Pro via one of these:

I have long been partial to NEC monitors since my first colour CRT -- I'd say choose firstly what has a stunning display and go with something like the 24" NEC AccuSync LCD24WMCX
I vote for the BenQ V2400W ~ $300 directly from BenQ. It has VGA, DVI, and HDMI and it also has the older 1900x1200 res
It is leaps and bounds above my older Gateway (s-pva)
i bought a 24 inch asus on newegg with a hdmi and built in speakers its perfect and it only cost 190 on sale :)
Personally, I'm in love with my T260HD Samsung.
Any 24 inch monitor from samsung FTW!

Just got this one. Lovin' it so far. Using if for my 360, PS3, and computer. Auto detects every signal that comes in.
1080p
2ms
DVI, HDMI, VGA
20000:1
Plus its crazy sexy!
Here's my own question:
Which screens are suited as well for media consumption and ordinary pc work?
There's NO need for ego shooters and extra fast changes.
Viewing angle: at least 176 degrees horizontal and vertical?
Screen technology: PVA, MVA, IPS or even OLED (with sufficient live span?)
Resolution: 1920 x 1200?
Brightness: at least 500 cd/m^2? Is 400 or 300 enough?
Contrast: 5000:1?
Is this enough to see "real" black? Or how is this done in tv screens?
All the typical price tags I know are above 500 € (take this as $500). The cheapest one I noticed is the Philips 240PW9ES, 24", 1920x1200, VGA, DVI, but no HDMI
Best ones might be
Eizo FlexScan HD2442W-TS, 24", 1920x1200, VGA, DVI, 2x HDMI: 1000 €
up to
Eizo FlexScan HD2441W-TS titan, 24", 1920x1200, VGA, DVI, 2x HDMI: 1300 €
Any guess when this will be within the 300€ reach?
The recommended Dell 2408WFP would fit the specs.
But the price:
US-Shop: $469 http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-6272
DE-Shop: 653.31 € http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=de&l=de&s=dhs&cs=dedhs1&sku=147256
Take the current exchange rate 1.40/1: $469 -> 335 €; + 19% tax: 400 € would be ok...
I was going to ask how about the larger sizes, like 27" or 30 or even 32" but then I saw that Apple was so "gay" and since I am too I guess I'll just go with the Apple. Really, people, using "gay" as a negative epithet is so *last century* and rude besides.
I agree, perhaps he should have used "queer" instead... the word choice there more aptly applies than does the usage of "gay"... but this is more about best monitors than it is about most non-offensive word choice by a anonymous commenter on a tech blog.
Samsung T240. I have a T260 but that's 1.5 inches too big for what that dude wants.
I ordered a Dell S2409W - it worked for 2 mins then broke. Terrible quality, poor viewing angles. My old NEC beats it hand down. Go for an IPA panel. They're worth the extra.
2408WFP (revision A02, of course).
Gateway FHD2401 ESRP $359.99
Great price and looks beautiful.
i dearly love my dell sp2309w. $300, 2048x1152 resolution, 2ms response time, hdmi, dvi, vga, audio in and out, 4 port usb hub. i have hdmi devices going to a switch, going to the hdmi port on the monitor, with audio out going to my 1974 receiver. gaming with polk monitor 5 speakers rocks! the picture is beautiful. the 23" screen is way big enough for gaming on something that you're sitting close enough to to use as a computer screen. accurately advertised as being a high enough resolution to view two full width webpages side by side. it's amazing!
benq 2400w
benq 2400w
IMO is awesome value for money,
use it both for my xbox via hdmi and my pc via dvi.
no issues at all
i have the 2408wfp, its GORGEOUS!
