Touchable Holography uses Wiimotes to add touch to holograms
Researchers from The University of Tokyo have demoed a touchable hologram at Siggraph 2009. The project, called Touchable Holography, involves the use of Wiimotes placed above the display to track hand motion, and an airborne ultrasound tactile display created in the university's lab to create the sensation of touch. The result is a holographic image that produces tactile feedback without any actual touching, and without degrading the image itself. Check out the video after the break for a fuller, more stunning explanation.

Next step, give this tech to the Japanese.... trust me on this.
At the beginning of the video it says University of Tokyo...
"Researchers from The University of Tokyo..."
First sentence fail.
Actually I could hear no audio so something must have been wrong when I watched it. I watched the video, honestly. Oh well, thanks for the heads up.
Yikes - missing that was pretty bad. Did you even read the article?
Maybe your day is non-holographically punching you in the face? ;)
And I just missed that tag before the vid. :D I deserve the down rank. *turns head in shame*
there is no audio, but is written on the captions on the video
Well I for one welcome our new holographic overlords.
But on a serious note this brings us one step closer to a yugioh style game with real holograms. now all we need is a giant stadium and card with special chips in them like the ones in passports and we're all good. Then again, the machine could go haywire and start attacking us with blind fury. Giving it an (advanced) AI wouldn't help much either because it might go paranoid HAL 9000ish on us.
Babble, babble, babble.........
The future is here!
The future is a government conspiracy. Trust me i have a foil hat.
"involves the use of Wiimotes placed above the display to track hand motion"
take that natal!
It's a bit difficult to use something that isn't released yet, now, isn't it?
Natal? And how would these research guys get their hands on Natal which is still early in development at MS?
Logic 1
You 0
*sigh
The best part about that was the "Logic 1 you 0". It's telling of someone that has to insult another by keeping score of their supposed missteps.
One step closer to helping Professor Moriarty off the holodeck.
He didn't leave the holodeck.. he created a new holodeck program to trick the crew into thinking he had left the holodeck.
and yes, its been a while since i've gotten laid
But Janeway's hologram boyfriend DID leave the holodeck when he stole the doctor's mobile emitter!
Yeah because how the hell else was Janeway gonna get any
Are you serious? Capt. Janeway had a bf and she got laid by him?
I stopped following Star Trek after next gen.
it looks like the mobile emitter will be created by the 2200's at this rate.
Holodeck here we come!!
Holodick for you.
Wow.
can anyone say holodeck?
Yes, both Dimitri and Michael. In fairness, I do see the mere 1 minute differential.
Yeah, but he did post first. I just checked the scanners and due to the quantum warp tachyon fields qTips post looks one minute late but in reality, was posted 10 years ago from a parallel universe.
First person to cry "fake" gets punched
Fake!
It's not a hologram. The image is flat (2D) but hanging in space in front of the display. It can move up/down and left/right, but not in/out.
Fake. Totally fake.
/me runs
*PUNCH*
It's using a concave mirror with the display, so it would appear to be floating in space if you were there in person. With the single-lens camera, you can at least see the effect of the perspective shift as the camera is panned around the "object".
looks really interesting, maybe it would be possible later to have images visible with your hand behind them, that seems a long ways to go though.
i mainly replied to this because my name is also Eric Schneider haha
Schneider's list
Sweet!!! Now bring on the games. With a large (expensive) setup like this you would be able to feel bullets hitting you in a FPS.
i dont think bullets hitting you in the chest will be the first thing that it got commercialized for.
it might have something to do with a chest, or something lower.
it is the japanese after all........
sweet jesus... think about all that Counter-Strike victory teabagging!..... i think i'll pass!!!
It's only a matter of time before you press a button and hear...
"Please state the nature of the medical emergency."
/StarTreck refrence
Holoporn is likely the first use...Anime style of course.
"You can feel raindrops falling on your hand,"
I want to feel boobies pressing against my hand...
"or a small creature."
... or a small nipple.
yeeeeahhh... I'm a perv. >_
FAKE!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm messing, don't get heated.
Genius! Now go build me one.... Please.....
"I'm squishing your head! I'm squishing your head!"
I refuse to believe! I just can't wrap my mind around something that incredibly cool being real.
How long before that focussed ultrasound finds it's way into a weapon?
the lil animal running around reminds me of the new game coming out for PS3 that uses the eyetoy, and u can touch it and pet it. I understand the diff here is they with this new tech u get feed back. u feel the pets feet running on your hand or what ever else u want to place your pet. i could see virtual or holographic porn getting a big kick out of this.
+ it is a holograph and not just agmented reality. so it's actually running on yer table in stead of on the table in the tv
So it's basically Project Natal with Wiimotes?
If you're referring to the motion tracking Johnny Chung Lee used Wiimotes to pull this off way before Natal was ever announced.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw
No, Project Natal uses your existing television, this would require a giant concave mirror in your living room. The wiimotes were just what they saw as a great way to track movement considering they are relatively cheap and already made, thus minimal circuit building.
The holographic image and hand tracking is not the best I´ve seen but the utra sonic tactile feedback system is AWESOME
Kif: "The Holo-shed's on the frits again! The characters turned real!"
Brannigan: "Damn! The last time that happened, I got slapped with 3 paternity suits!"
