Windows 7 RTM released to TechNet and MSDN
Here we go -- as planned, Microsoft's just released the Windows 7 RTM build to TechNet and MSDN subscribers. Selected beta testers will also get access, but you'll have to promise to be Microsoft's best friend. As for the rest of us, well, October 22 isn't so far away, and the RC build is still available. That's something, right?

i wonder if my account from school is still active >.>
you know, you could have probably checked that sooner than the time it took you to post that comment ;)
Hey btw... if you do get ur hands on it... can you post what's so different from RC1?
pal :)
At least at my school its always disabled at the end of every semester, and everyone gets re-activated about a week after the next semester begins, if you're taking classes that semester. But that's only for engineering majors.
it doesn't matter, it's not on MSDNAA yet anyways.
Agreed, I just checked. Only Win7 Beta and RC, which you can get outside MSDNAA anyway.
any idea when it will come to msdnaa??
I'm an MSDNAA admin and it is most certainly there. Perhaps you're dealing with the ELMS distribution system? If so, it is up to your local MSDNAA guy/gal to get it installed and configured for download.
We are on CA, MVLS says we should have it under SA eventually. However it says check back later. Nice thing is CA also has access to Technet so I still get it today anyway.
that's why you make friends with younger students. so when you graduate, you can use their logins for perks. woop. it's only a matter of time. seasnet, here i come
@Paul,
what the students can get to might be different than what you can get to as the MSDNAA Administrator. most everywhere does use EMLS, and I've seen some schools MSDNAA offerings way behind the times because the person in the school head of it doesn't get around to updating for some time.
MSDNAA is the same as MSDN, it's just a subscription level. And yes, it is there. College software is not the same thing as MSDNAA (for the most part) - that is the academic discount and volume licensing.
Actually, I'm an MSDN AA admin, and it's not showing up in our system yet. Sad.
@Jeremy K, it isn't showing up when you click on Subscriber Downloads from msdnaa.com??? That's really strange. Doesn't matter. It'll take until October 17 to download at current speeds...
What version will be available from MSDNAA??
Will be Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate?
@Nikos
my guess would be windows 7 professional, because on my account i can only download windows vista business so i imagine it would follow the same suit unless different schools get different versions
Just Professional and Enterprise, but since Enterprise is essentially Ultimate for businesses and Professional has just about everything anybody would want, I don't see this as a liability. With Vista, it was since the business versions didn't come with Media Center or games. But with Windows 7 they are truly supersets of the consumer versions.
Note that I don't plan on making Enterprise available to students, but you/they won't be missing much...
Yeah, I definately don't have it in my student MSDNAA account. Come on guys, I've been on the edge of my seat here!
Windows 7 Pro is by far a good deal but Ultimate especially for students is a the must have version.
The fact alone that Ultimate supports additional languages and localization is a huge advantage for the plenty of international students around the world.
I do not see what is the big deal for Microsoft to does not offer both Pro and Ultimate versions to MSDNAA. Hopefully they will realize the situation and they will offer Ultimate in later time.
damn ELMS!!!!!!!
oh well ill check it in a week.....
YAY, it's on my university's site now!!!
Yea, it's something.
*yawn*
that's creepy and gross...
Why Pal? Are you hetero-phobic?
I'm running the RC and I'm patient. I'll get my free upgrade disc in early November.
I'm running a pirated RTM copy, so I'll be patient too cause there's no need to format again between now and October 22nd, if I bother formatting when I get my legit copy.
Downloading now!
Me too!
500k second, 1hr remaining.
Woop woop!
This is the slowest download from Microsoft I have ever had. ~200KBps, and we're on a dedicated 10/5Mb fiber line, and it's no where near capacity right now.
I am having speed issues as well. :( Direct download link pasted into IE address bar is staying a consistent 182 KB/s but the download manager is all over the map. Slooooooooowwwwwwww.
Bouncing between 150-500k. Might download tonight at home where I know my 18d/2u connection won't be capping out.
Yep, I started out within about 3 minutes of it being posted (I'd been refreshing the browser quite regularly) hoping to get it down prior to the slow-down. Started out at 600 KB/s with < 1 hour download time. Almost two hours later I'm < 30% through and running at way < 100 KB/s. I'd say this was a popular download! I guess everyone will get to install it tomorrow.
Much faster download link:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/securedownloads/dd692862.aspx
I got it on a torrent at a steady 800KB/s. :P
Anyone know where I can get that background or similar ones? Preferably in 1080p.

I wonder how these selected beta testers get selected. *crosses fingers*
it's not a random thing. These are testers that have been around for a while or active in the MSDN community.
Well, I've only been a beta tester since Vista's early betas, so I dunno where that puts me.
If you were a part of the private Windows 7 beta test, you would have gotten an e-mail yesterday with information about obtaining your free copy. ALL private beta testers get a free copy. If you didn't get that e-mail, you were not a part of the private beta.
snow leopard is coming sooner :P
Haha, people still buy crap from Apple?! :D
yes
nobody cares about snow leopard
You mean Tiger Service Pack 2? Yeah, that's coming out sooner. And you are paying for a service pack.
at least I am paying $30 for a a GOOD update,, rather than paying hundreds for Vista (depending on which of the ten versions is best for you!)
and then be ripped off again and pay another $100-$200 for an excuse of a OS called Windows 7, which is basically a face lifted vista where you guys were given stuff that was supposed to be in vista
Plus,, OS X will never have an update that is so bad that people will want to DOWNGRADE to XP,,
this is pathetic
Im sure all 5 of you out there will enjoy this service pack.
I gotta ask... how long have you been using OSX?
Do you even remember...
- How horribly slow 10.0 and 10.1 were?
- How Apple actually shipped machines that dual-booted OS X and OS9 on it (my 2001 Quicksilver shipped with both)?
- How Apple charged $129 for upgrades for 10.4 and 10.5?
For all the crap that Microsoft has taken for Vista, you have to remember two major things;
1) Microsoft doesn't have the luxury of vertical integration, and has to support MUCH larger hardware ecosystem than Apple does. This leads to stuff like poorly written graphics drivers bringing down the system, or other problems that get attributed to Microsoft.
2) For all intents and purposes, Vista was a big of an undertaking as NT4 -> Win2000, and took much longer, leading to people (both end users and developers) getting used to XP. As with the NT4 to 2000 upgrade (or OS9 to OS X upgrade), things get broken and people who are used to the old ways of doing things get mad. That's just the way things go.
With those things said, Vista is IMO a very good and stable OS. But, you guys aren't gonna change your opinions or biases because of a post on the internet, so this entire thing is kinda a waste...
You are all a bunch of idiots. Seriously, who cares which OS you use? Or do you really think that your idiotic ramblings make a difference? Here's a couple of facts for you:
1. Windows 7 is actually pretty good so I don't see people switching to the Mac much more if their Windows computer comes with it.
2. I have no intention of switching back to Windows because Windows 7 isn't THAT good - no one with a current Mac will be switching to Windows 7.
@kelmon
Wrong.
