Stealth Computer kicks and shoves its Warrior 2000 rugged tablet out the door

Stealth Computer isn't exactly going for much subtlety with a rugged laptop line called "Warrior," but subtlety is hardly part of the equation when we're talking about a convertible tablet that's protected from repeated drops, shocks, dust, water, and, um, lint. Like most such ruggedized computers, however, all that comes at some expense to performance, although this new 13.3-inch Warrior NW-2000 model is certainly still more than adequate with a 1.06GHz low-voltage Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and a built-in DVD burner, not to mention optional 3G, GPS, and all the usual security measures like a fingerprint scanner and various password protection options. Oh, and a starting price of $4,895.

i'd love to pick one of these up just to try how its durability
I'd love to drop one of these down just to try its durability. ;]
Sounds like it may just be cheaper if you just buy a cheap $450 Dell every few months.
but will it stop bullets?
but will it stop a projectile?
This is for people whose data is more important than the hardware.
$300 tablet off ebay + $70 external backup drive.
Faster, cheaper, and it comes with an excuse to upgrade my hardware every year or so.
I bet nobody in private sector is buying these things...
Shenanigans has a point there with buying the cheap Dells.

i think ill just not drop my laptop.... you know and save 4k

Waterproof? What about the fans?
This looks like the lappy Capt. Watsen has on Whale Wars.
Wow a laptop with a case that isn't a piece of crap. Too bad it's laughably overpriced. This thing better be hand made to order with a tag like that.
Is this a joke? Five grand and it doesnt have an ssd? (at least its optional) For five g's I'd expect at least a 256gb ssd in there, i mean come on! you want to save on battery life so you put a low power cpu in there, why not save whatever you're wasting with that hard drive and go for a ssd with way better performance, am I missing something?
Or you could passively cool it, give it a touchscreen keyboard and SSD, remove the optical drive, seal the ports, and make it shock resistant and waterproof /that/ way.. but hey, this isn't Apple, is it-- so why make a laptop elegant when you can make it hideous?
What do you think the attached stylus is for, genius?
Lifting dingleberries?
I mean a touchscreen instead of a keyboard. So you just have one flat surface and some kind of seal around the outside.
Unfortunately, the human carrying one of these will not be as rugged.
That's why you use it as a shield. Buy ten of them, put them on your body, and you become Iron Man with 1.6TB of storage!
I don't get it. You can get a Panasonic Toughbook with better specs (a faster cpu anyway) for a grand less.
It would be cheaper just to pick up a thinkpad.

Sorry, that was a misstake, please delete my comment, thanks.
This is the engadget comment system we are talking bout here. People can barely read the comments properly without the system blowing up, let along actually modify/delete them!
It sure is nice working at a place where I can play with things like these whenever I want. Although, we generally use Toughbooks. The reason they are so expensive is the materials used to build the case, and all the R&D and testing that goes into meeting the various military and gov't specifications for 'ruggedness.' Oh, and because they know that they can sell it to the military and gov't for outrageous prices and get away with it.
The best thing about working with computers like these is that you just don't worry about them. Just pick them up however you want using whatever corner of the case you can grab and throw it in your vehicle and go. You can switch out the harddrive in seconds. No screws required. Same with the battery. They are slow, but most of the people that use these aren't doing anything that graphics or CPU intensive that would require a fast processor or GPU.
But.. Will it blend ?
For 4k I'd hope not
