Nokia 5530 XpressMusic out of box, handled on video, preferred over 5800
As far as we're concerned, Nokia's 5530 XpressMusic far and away out-classes its more expensive older brother the 5800, even if it is lacking in the 3G department. British phone retailer mobiles.co.uk thought it best to tease us with an unboxing video of their own, along with some quick impressions of the touchscreen device. It's certainly a looker, and a sleek device they're pretty confident will do well. Some of the S60 5th edition additions are very welcomed, such as the new scrolling contacts bar, but for better and for worse (mostly worse), it's still S60. See it for yourself after the break, and if you wish really hard, there's a good chance this still won't get 3G, but at least you can say you tried.

Wasn't very impressed with the touch response, i don't think i could use that after using phones like the iPhone and the Pre with such great touch screens.
Yeah exactly my point. Why would I settle for less at this point unless I was truly broke and didn't have a choice.
Nokia promised a touch UI, it came, it sucked and I moved on. Other than for reasons of pure cost I wouldn't use it.
ipoop, you useless piece of shit. Full of fail. I hope you trip and choke on your phone. That's if the thing fits in your pie hole. Somehow I doubt it will have issue; since your mouth manages to hold my cock just fine. Your Mom taught you well.
What happens to using microUSB for charging? Yeah, touch screen responsiveness is not too pleasing. As much as I like Nokia, their approach to touch interface is way behind, plus the dated S60 UI. Without a physical keyboard, using a half-baked touch UI can be really annoying.
well, when the 5800 first came out it was a bit slow but the last update sped it up. in fact after a while it is actually better as resistive for what it can do. keyboard on 5800 is far better then an iphone but lacks predictive typing.(good and bad thing). only thing i may change is screen size in the future and i may do that by getting something from samsung. the phone above is meant to do 2 things: 1. amuse the younger crowd and 2. sell in the states on a carrier.
all of this means nothing as the x3 is going to bury all of these phones unless a better alternative comes along possibly with tegra.
I have both so I know the latest v30 update really fixed the 5800. It is pretty darn fast now.
However you have to be joking about the 5800's on screen keyboard. In portrait it is usable only with a stylus. In landscape it is still very slow and insensitive and often registers the wrong button. The iPhone portrait or landscape keyboard beats it. As far as on screen keyboards go Apple has the best. Now any physical keyboards will murder it even the N97's. Assuming you like to turn the device and flip it open every time for every little SMS.
100% agree on x3. Everything will get buried as long as SE doesn't screw up.
@sr
Why would you use the mini QWERT keyboard for SMS when you have the awesomeness of T9 which, for portrait orientation, is the best input method ever?
I used to harass the iPhone crowds until I bought a first generation iTouch to play with and within a week of that I joined the iPhone crowds. I abandoned an Omnia and turned an HTC Touch Diamond into a second phone in the process.
Winmo and s60 phones are truly powerful phones with features that an iPhone can only dream of. I have to jailbreak and ssh into my iPhone to put pdf files and isilo files into the thing and since I got it I haven't touch the bluetooth. I also have a prepaid sim and the first day, I lost about 20$ for data that I didnt want to use because there is no way to turn cellular data off (except you enter incorrect APN)!
Yet, I'm sticking with iPhone for usability and the excellent display. Winmo's GUI is appalling, now that I have seen what iPhone can do. I hope winmo 7 seven will bring something similar to the iPhone interface.
But today iPhone is king. If you haven't used one before do yourself a favour and get one to play with for a day or two.
This 5530 has been introduced to compete with lower end touch phones from Samsung and LG like LG cookie.
So there is no point in comparing it with i-phone. Though the video may sometimes show sluggish performance,
that is much bearable than the hefty price of iphone or palm or HTC higher end phones, espcecially in developing countries
and in US, who do not need 3G or heavy data plan.
IF they release this phone in US on AT&T, then i am sure, it will be a hit in US. It will be hit elsewhere too, outside US.
Just wait and watch like 5800 surprised and is still surprising many critics with as good sales as iphone.
how come it takes about 4 posts for every discussion about a touch screen phone to get onto the iPhone and start bashing it?
Fair enough, some people don't like the iPhone, we get it. Do you always feel the need to tell everyone how much you hate it? I have an iPhone 3GS, I love it, simply because the OS is brilliant when paired up with the capacitive screen. It's unbelievably responsive, very reliable and I have no bones to pick about it.
When comparing touchscreen phones, maybe it's best to compare phones that are in the same category. This is Nokia 5530 is not in the same category, as it's a resistive touchscreen based on an OS that's well out of date. Nokia do need to up the ante to be more relevant. It's all well and good releasing these concept phone mockups, but what people really want is for a phone to work how it should.
I know some of you will be reading this and thinking "But Nokia phones are the best around! Multitasking, cut copy and paste since 100BC, better camera" and that's fair enough, that's your opinion. You're entitled to it, I'm entitled to mine. I prefer my iPhone, you prefer your Nokia/SE/LG/Samsung or whatever phone you've got. Instead of being so forceful in your opinions, how about putting them across in a way that's a little less forceful, then what we can end up with is a debate, rather than an argument.
I don't see the problem in other people having different opinions, it's what drives technology forward. Continuously means companies have to innovate to change peoples' opinions. I, for one, welcome other people having different opinions and enjoy the conversation I get from those people. Maybe a lot of people on here do too.
All technology has it's pros and cons. Let's stop focussing on what they can't do, but let's focus on what they can do BETTER. Companies constantly look for feedback, not just from their own customer base, but from others. ie, people want higher resolution camera on their Nokia phone. LG notice this, notice they have a far inferior resolution on their phone, they release a phone with a higher resolution than Nokia's, potentially poaching their customers. It's how it works.
How about we give it a try?
Yes we know the 5530 is budget model, but compare the 3GS to the N97 and you'll see quickly that an OS like S60v5 belongs on budget devices only.
If you compare the 3GS and N97, you'll see quickly that the OS does not fit on a supposed "flagship" device. It is nowhere in the same league as the 3GS. I should know I've been a Nokia user for many years. But I knew it was time to leave. This phone at $200-250 will do well, but it isn't in the same league as the iPhone and neither is anything Nokia makes right now.
@bibhnarp
I agree with you partially. But the point about using Nokia or any other device is not just about OS. Ofcz technology can make strides
in leaps and bounds, but there is something called "price point". If it was just technology then LC watchphone would be so great to use, compared to iphone also. But its the price that drives the market along with technology advancement.
I think most of the people who dont want iphone is because of the amount of restrictions you face and also the skyrocket high price you pay for having it. For ex: 2 year contracts with data plan, along with voice. Hardly any corporate or education discounts with iphone.
Plus the high price even with the contract. Nokia sells mostly every phone unlocked with no limitations. You can develop and use any app you want with their phones. Apple rejects apps. (now ofcourse if you hack it, you can use anything), but how many people would like to hack the phone while under warranty, considering how delicate the phone is.
Also along with iphone, you will generally spend lot more than actually you would ever need. You will spend money on expensive cases to protect delicate phone, spend $1 on so many useless apps which all add up overall, which generally not many people realize.
Also, lot of people generally who buy iphone don't even need to use the internet or their lifestyle is also not like that that they would need internet. But just because being overwhelmed out of status symbol and coolness factor, they buy it, get locked in contract, and then since they have spend so much money on it, they think that they need to use it as much as they can to make its every penny worth it. I have seen many people who have iphone, who are sitting in office or at home and have internet connection on their computers, but still use iphone for browsing in that small little screen as compared to their laptop screens. Its just because the kind of craze they develop and also want to make every penny count.
Nokia's OS is not as bad as most of the "American" blogs portray it as. I also give credit to Nokia and other handset manufacturers, since they develop handsets that poor people can afford too. Same thing applies to Microsoft for cheap pcs.
IF MS or Nokia were not there, then Apple would not have reached the common man with their products, because Apple doesn't care about common man, they only care about higher end market, where they know that their target customers are generally filthy rich or crazy who get awed by coolness factor and throw away their hard earned money.

I don't know about you guys, but every time I see those review complaining about a Nokia device "still" using S60, it sounds to me like "it doens't use OSX mobile". Seriously, what you guys really expected it would run? Sheeeesh, get over it already! Symbian^4 is already in the works and Maemo 5 is coming soon.
And it's not like S60 doesn't get the job done, anyway.
i just bought a 2gb stick today for 22bucks.
Thanks for the "out of box" Review, a little bit boring review but it showed the "out of box" stuff :)
Again, thanks again for the effort.
Fuckin hell, My eyes died trying to focus!!!
there crowd over here forget ...that many ppl don't want 3G.they prefer to make heavy downloads over wi-fi and minimal download over edge ..like rss feed etc..
GPS is a really useful device.but cell based positioning good enough for local search like pizza or atm though not for navigating .so I think 5530 has a great market potential for those who really don't want 3G or GPS .
those who want all that can go for 5800 ..which is really cheap for all such fuctionality.
I have no complain about symbian os ...as think its one be good os though I prefer android over it.
about apple ...I hate someone controlling my device after I paid for it.....................
apple os just introduced copy/paste ...still to incorporate flash and multitasking...
