Bring popcorn: Youserbase reviews Sony Ericsson's Satio and Aino smartphones on video
Sony Ericsson has been teasing us with its hottest for some months now, the Satio (nee Idou) and the Aino, two media-heavy smartphones that are inching closer to international release. They still aren't confirmed for American shores, but until then we can enjoy a series of lengthy videos covering the two courtesy of Youserbase. How lengthy? We're talking almost 75 minutes of discussion and tentative fingering over nine parts, showing off nearly every nook and cranny of the phones' (decidedly dark) user interfaces. While there aren't any huge surprises here, the vids give good feel for the responsive performance of the UI -- and of the occasionally not-so-responsive integrated browsers. We've included just the first two installments here after the break, but if you don't have anything planned this morning feel free to click on through for the epic and sweeping series.

"Tentative fingering"....teehee
@iPoop...what does that have to do with fingering? Please try to stay on topic....
At iPoop,
That's the only thing you could come up with? Of all the things a 3GS could do better than this 12.1mp cybershot shooter by SE, who are known for having great quality phone cameras, who are associated with Sony who make all kinds of professional and consumer level cameras, you decided to comment on the AUTOFOCUS?! Damn... Well even with fast autofocus, the photo quality of the 3GS will be rubbish compared to this.
@ iPoop
Seriously, why do you feel the need to defend the iPhone? Did you invent and build it yourself? I guess you feel threatened or something.... I own an iPhone 3GS and I love it but c'mon like nothing else will ever compare to it.
This thing looks awesome especially the camera so shaddup!
Is it just me or from the outward appearance the Satio looks more like a camera then a phone...
The design is loosely based on SOny's T-series cameras, so yeah.
Can't view the video, blocked at work. Is the Aino a touchscreen?
It's a featurephone with touch capabilities. i.e. there's a separate media menu that plays videos, music, the radio and takes pictures when the slider is closed. With it open, the phone works like a normal featurephone.
It's kinda weird, yes. We'll have to see how they market this hybrid thingy.
The interface is really quite fast, but a bit unattractive to me. I kind of wish they had done an interface that was similar to the PS3/PSP's XMB interface.
The Lens cover does seem a bit too big though, some of SE's phone's have a lens cover that slides flush into the body of the phone, it would have been nice if they could have done that here.
The XMB interface is present in the media menu, as it has been in almost all Sony Ericsson phones for a while now.
what are you you talking about
Aino? Pronouced "Anal"? Great marketing
Are you illiterate or was that just a really pathetic attempt at humor? Either way your comment was just sad.
The reviewer actually managed to make a really exciting product sound about as interesting as a pensioner reliving "the good ol days"
I hope Sony releases a version with north american 3g. I am starting to really want this phone.
When I saw the stylus, I released an unbelievable guffaw. Knowing Sony Ericsson and their delays, this won't be widely available until 2015, ok, that's exaggerating - maybe 2010. A stylus. On a phone. A supposed multimedia phone. In 2010.
Use a fudging capacitive screen, fools.
Just because there's a stylus, doesn't mean you have to use it. That UI is perfectly fine for finger use.
"When I saw the stylus, I released an unbelievable guffaw"
"DuhhhHAWWWWHAWWWW"
Yeah...it is unbelievable.
S60 is a bad pain in the ass experience.SE should drop it and go with Android.
The Sony Xperia X3 will use Android. They're waiting for the 2.0 Android.
too bad it hasn't got a 3.5 mm headphone jack
Best avatar ever, after mine :p
Yup.
Typical Sony Ericsson. Well, more Sony than Ericsson. I guess they have to sell those Walkman mp3 players too, so they can't have too much competition from their own phones.
But then again, we might just have to wait a few years and they'll start including the standard connectors and such. Since they just started adding microSD slots...
Does it matter when it some with a Bluetooth headset that also has FM radio built into it?
The multimedia capabilities of this device are seriously impressive.
Only problem with this handset in particular is that it is missing Android. I think the Xperia 3 will fill that void though.
I wonder what kind of imp[act these multimedia phones are having on the likes of standalone media playing devices.
Why didn't Sony Ericsson at least put a couple softkeys and the D-Pad on the front of the phone! I like the phone, but that is going to be a deal killer for me since you have to slide the keyboard to do anything.
Its sad that you wake up every morning, leave your cardboard box and go into an apple store just to type these nonsensical things.
Damn it...corporate firewall...will have to wait until evening to look at the review.
That didn't even make sense. Sony has been in this a lot longer than Apple. Little boys? Laughable.
I was just making fun of how they typed "you you" in the article, another mistake.
"but if you you don't have anything planned this morning feel free to click on through for the epic and sweeping series."
Wait... No S60 jabs?
Erm, the Satio has a resistive touchscreen, SE you should know capacitive is the way forward.
Come on SE, the iPhone and the Android phones use capacitive .
You should know development is going forward. Resistive screens are not what they used to be. The Satio is resistive and the Aino is Capacitive.
This phone was never intended to beat the iphone. Nitwit. Thats the x2 android phone thats going to do that.
X2 is Winmo6.5. X3 is Android, but SE is waiting for Android 2.0. Who knows what Apple would come up with by the time we see the X3.
Satio: Kudos to SE for making the S60 UI look less dated. Touch seems to be more responsive than the N97/5800, although still looks like a pain when he's trying to scroll over the photos. Not utilizing the accelerometer to rotate pictures? WTF? Hopefully that will be implemented in the final version. Touch to focus is nice. Seems like an nice alternative and is filling the gap for S60 that Nokia is ignoring. But a stylus? *shudder
Aino: No touchscreen? SE's dumbphone OS? Forget it.
Problem with SE is, regardless of how nice their phones are, it will take them ages to release them in the US, sometimes a year AFTER other countries like Asia/Europe. It seems that US always get the leftovers. Of course, it doesn't help that providers like AT&T are crippling and installing their own firmware that put the phone to a crawl. Ridiculous.
Come on SE, wheres your Android phone?
Regarding the phones coming to the US. Blame your operators, they choose when to release/range the phones, not Sony Ericsson. It is a shame I agree but it is all up to AT&Tm TMo and the other guys.
You don't like propriatory OS's but the OS now have an app part in playnowarena.com and also a big developer community. I just wait for the day that simple developers realize Sony ericsson OS reaches over 200 million users...
@Pixlas: Sony and any other manufactures always have the option to simply sell the phone unlocked, no need to wait/blame the carriers. But they still cherry pick certain models to be sold unlocked, and other sold provider-locked thru the carriers. That's bull. For example, look at the SE W760. Europe & Asia got his phone last year. Instead of just selling it unlocked, SE gave it to AT&T, and now that phone is provider-locked, slowed down by AT&T's junk, and 1 year late.
I'd like to make an annoucement, and since I'm bored, i'll make it with caps locked:
PHONES WITH RESISTIVE SCREEN AND STYLUS ARE NOT MADE FOR YOU AMERICANS!!!!! THE STYLUS IS FOR PEOPLE LIKE CHINESE THAT USE THE HANDWRITING RECOGNITION!!!!
HAVING A STYLUS DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE TO USE IT!!! S60 IS TOTALLY FINGER FRIENDLY!!!
Whatever you guys think, it's still a smart move to have handwriting recognition on a phone. A resistive screen also allows to use your phone with gloves, which in countries like... say Russia... is pretty important.
And I have a Nokia 5800 running S60, I never use the stylus, so once and for all, having a stylus doesn't mean you have to use it.
Thanks.
hey this is the only phone i admit is better than the iPhone, c´mon samsung sucks bad the cannot beat the marvelous and incredible iPhone
my wallet just ran away in fear
Missing stuff:
* You forgot the headset that comes with the phone! It ships with a Bluetooth headset that has FM radio too! This is truly something new and very needed according to my needs.
* You did not show the media sync software that lets you autosync all your media over wifi as soon as you get within rtange of your home network. I don't mean MediaGo but a phone app that you didn't even see in the review.
* MediaGo - an excellent pc software that you can actually download now from the sony ericsson web page. I the review it says it is slow but you can set it to convert your library continously which is good.
did that guy just pull out a stylus... Earth to Sony's designers... modern touchscreen device are now designed to be fully functional with fingers only... people don't want to wip out a stylus to use their phones anymore.
this is just basically the same old, same old from Sony.. nice hardware but the software sucks the big one... 10 year old crap, all gussyed up to look modern in still shots...
get a clue Sony! no one is going to fall for it get to work on a real OS or use android and adapt it.. do something.. this is not going to cut it.. like i said it's too bad because the hardware is pretty sweet...
You stylus-hater.
any updates on a release date? i'm guessing not for a long time in the US?
