Zune HD on-screen keyboard and browser caught on camera
Oh, you want even more Zune HD news today? You got it! Yahoo! Tech managed to get a hands-on with the device, snapping some pictures of the browser and, more importantly, the on-screen keyboard. It's only a minor glimpse, but it definitely looks sleek. Shot of the browser after the break, and hit up the read link for full gallery. Seriously, Microsoft, add a 3G chipset and dialer app, and you can go ahead and draft those "million seller" press releases already.
Update: CNET has posted some more pictures of the browser and keyboard, including Facebook in landscape mode.

meh...
It's all about the smoothness.
So we will have to wait for a video showing the browser in action.
Although i wonder about the speed of the browser with ie so far behind webkit and firefox.
Remember that iphone, palm pre and Android all use webkit for their browser.
@titanium
IE on 6.5 is pretty slick...not quite as good as Opera mobile but close. The base rendering engine really has little to do with how well it performs on a mobile platform.
@iDouche
Someone is a bit angry there, aren't we?
The Apple fanboy finally has some decent competition, and is getting all pouty and quaking in his boots, so much so that his only defense is to bash an ultimately better company.
hey iJames,
how about you iSTFU and get your iHead out of apples ass for a little bit!? iThanks.
@Kamokazi
The rendering engine may not be important but the javascript interpreter is.
ESPECIALLY on mobile devices where system resources are limited.
We'll see.
Dax,
Do you really think Apple invented multi-touch?
Seriously, after all of the almost universally acknowledged debunking and yet still, here in Aug of 2009, we get some iDiot who argues otherwise?
Let me guess, they also invented copy/paste, video recording, and what the hell....phones too, right? Right?
Don't forget the screen.
And white. Apple totally invented the color white.
So iJames, would you agree that Windows is the greatest OS since at least 80% of people use it?
George, 92%.
@ Windows FTW, George
Most people use Windows because they are not aware they have a choice or because it's what's given to them at work.
@MRLN, Fountain of Monumental and Beautiful and Otherwise Ineffable Wit and Wisdom
I don't know any other way of saying how funny your comment was other than saying to you that because of you i screwed up my keyboard with coffee, thank you very much Sir.
@George
i'm glad you pointed that out, i was just about to do the same thing.
@Dax
You DO know that____BOTH____ Apple and Microsoft steal ideas from other people and claim them as Original and Revolutionary, right? Right?
its the dumbest thing ever when people say "micro$oft." hello the government intervened on the monopoly.
" Because Apple is far more superior. "
And you called him an idiot... Maybe you should learn your grammar more better.
@foxkenji
No most people use windows because mac os are usually only on macs which are usually way more expensive than the average computer user wants to spend
@garrenteed
Acutally.....Hasbro invented monopoly to the masses
This won't stand a chance against Creative/Cowon/Archos/Walkman. Research it yourself, or go in a non-US city and ask everybody if they prefer the veterans over the iPod and I can guarntee that 80~99% will choose the former. You know why? Because They are far superior. You can whine and downrank me all you want, but you can't change that fact.
Oh wow, Troll-libs is definitely more fun and satisfying than the original!
No FoxKenji
Most people use Windows because they don't want to pay 2-3 times more for something comparable.
Most people use Windows because they don't want to be limited to Steve Jobs strict decisions on what is/isn't allowed on his platform.
Most people use Windows because the vast majority of businesses, education institutions, media companies, game designers, and hardware manufacturers cater to Windows first, and Mac is only an after thought.
Most people use Windows because they are more productive with it, have more choice with it, and save more money choosing it, than if they went to the Mac platform.
But you can believe whatever you want to believe. No one is paying 2-3 times more for whatever you (err Apple) is trying to sell.
Man wow people these days argue over pointless topics, is Apple paying you for that??
But anyways, the way business is run....you either
Create the Product......
or.....
You make an existing product even better.....
TaDa!!! Rack In the Cash
'Meh'. The sound a sheep makes.
Coincidence? I think not.
Dear aaron
I first wondered why you posted meh. Then after seeing the long stream of replys to your comment everything became clear.
You anticipated that people could not stand to have their comments further down the page and leech to your comment in a desperate attempt to be up there where the First! have their glory.
I think you are an insightful person and have made my day. Thank you.
@ x Shadow
finally somebody who had at least one lesson in simple marketing and business commented.
it is part of the usual circle of life of a product that it gets copied. whether they steal the design, the technology, or the whole thing (-->clone).
you can find this in every business book.
and BTW: i am not a fan of the x-box but i have to say this:
Apple fanboys, since the company you cheer for is so superior... WHERE IS YOUR TOP-OF-THE-ART GAMING CONSOLE???
The real question is...DOES IT HAVE TRUE MULTITASKING!!!!?!!
To be honest it looks like a nice device, but what does it do better than the original iPod touch that was released 2 years ago?
-faster processor (expected)
-HD video (if you output to another screen...thats what I have netflix for anyways...)
-HD radio (thats pretty cool)
-Better screen (Still yet to be known...no pictures of it used outdoors yet, where I use my iPod the most)
-Better browser (no one knows yet)
Seriously, can't we just wait until the product actually exists in a market before making baseless comparisons?
I guess not, this is engadget.
@iJames
if i'm an idiot, then you're an iDiot.
Its funny...all the Zune people always say "this is the time, this looks awesome, Zune FTW) when the Zune first came out, when the pay 15 dollars for music thing came out now when this is coming out. Unfortunately it is, again, 2-3 years late to the party. Now it has the basic features of the ipod touch down, great, now where are the apps, the phone calls, the google maps and all the other thousand things that have come to the iphone/ipod touch since 2006? As far as the speed I just got a 3GS and it is very zippy when doing all kinds of things. The iphone is especially strong when browsing the internet and I really don't see an IE based browser coming anywhere close (just like on computers the IE browser is a constant source of fail when compared with Safari, Chrome, Opera and Firefox).
The only reason to buy this is because you absolutely hate Apple for one reason or another, it would have been a contender 3 years ago if released with the first touch/iphone, but compared with how those two ecosystems have developed it has almost no chance of catching up before Apple moves on to something better (just like with the Zune). If MS gets 5% market share off this thing it will be a HUGE accomplishment (they're sitting at around 3 now vs Apples roughly 80% or so).
I mean if anyone can think of anything this has the iphone or ipod touch doesn't have please, feel free (can't even say radio, as the commercials say, there's an app for that, I listen to LAs 89.9 through my phone all the time, have pandora for music plus any satellite radio stations I want). Alternately I can think of a hundred things an iphone or touch can do that this can't.
Doesn't look bad.
Yep .. this should really be a phone. PMP/Mp3 wars are over ... I think the phone war is still up for grab though.
@David: If there's no more LARGE mp3 war, then the zune hd and ipod touch will dominate the market.
IT LOOKS FINE. But whatever.
I want
That is amazing
Looks kinda odd, but it's quite sleek-looking. Still waiting to see if the performance is up to snuff.
one word....Tegra
Yeah, but still; two words: Internet Explorer
(I mean, it could be Webkit as well, but just saying.)
I can't wait! My guess is that this is a test to see how successful this form factor is for the zune platform, and if all goes well, they may make a phone out of it in the next version.
But who knows!
-Taylor
I really hope this turns in to a phone but i doubt it will happen. It will piss off a lot of manufacturers who put winmo on their own hardware and i think if a zune phone is a success it will cause HTC, Motorola, Samsung and the rest of them to quit making winmo phones.
I don't think it would be that extreme. The zune OS probably wouldn't be as business orientated.
@Vinnie: Look at the iPhone. Leave it up to RIM to make business phones. I want a Zune Phone!
If earlier reports are true, WinMo 7 is based off of this new Zune UI, or is it the other way around? Either way, expect big things from WinMo 7 -- I just hope that the wait isn't forever.
There will be no Zune phone.
It would undercut companies using WinMo and get them pissed off.
MS should stick to it's stance of making software for others than making a single product.
I still don't see the big deal about the Zune though.
Maybe it'll be a base for WinMo 7, but if to be honest, most consumers will probably want the iPod Touch if there is no OLED or some big feature.
We shall have to wait and see.
Microsoft will have to break relation ships with many companies to make a phone out of this.
Better idea would give the zune software along with Windows Mobile package.
This will enable companies like Samsung, HTC, etc. to make zune-phones.
project pink will be zune and other services integrated into WinMo7.
Not sure whether it will be there by default or will be like 'Google Experience' for android - the ODMs have to pay extra for these features.
I would trade my iPhone 3G for this..........then I would super glue my spare LG Vu to the back of it.
And you'll be running back to your 3GS a week later.
how is it going to fit in your pocket? or do you carry it in one of those belt pouches?
Mike as far as I know I've only seen German tourists wearing anything like that!
@Mike - if he can fit an iPhone in his pocket then this Zune-LG combo should be no problem.
I think it's time to say F-you iPod, hello Zune HD
so subtle...
I'm in.
Just waiting for them to hit retail.
