Humanthesizer turns 15 bikini models into a live dancing synth
And you thought conductive paint was boring. Say hello to the Humanthesizer, a joint creation between electronic musician Calvin Harris, Sony Music UK, and Bare conductive body ink, which turned 15 bikini-clad ladies into a giant Arduino-powered synth capable of playing Harris's track "Ready For The Weekend" though Max/MSP and Ableton Live. Each patch is triggered by one of the girls closing a circuit with her hands or feet -- you can see the "wires" painted on their arms and legs if you look closely -- and the final performance bounces right along in that blurry space between dancing and playing. You have to see it to understand -- check out the videos after the break.

rofl...dude gets caught staring in pic 1 of the gallery!
(not that I blame him)
That paint is designed for the pelvic area. I'd make some Drum'nBass Amen masher. Just give me Jessica Alba and Megan Fox.
Sony is a "Bag of Hurt"
I kind of expected more. There was no point in putting that stuff on humans if all they're gonna do is open/close a circuit by standing on something or clapping. It also didn't need to be fancy conductive paint, he could've just put tinfoil on their hands or feet. Hell, he could've asked each of them to hold a switch and turn it off and on.
From the introduction, I expected the sounds to be different depending on the way the bodies moved, so that by dancing you could create music.
Agreed.
He COULD have just used a synthesizer, but that would be missing the point.
It would, but the point -you're- missing is that he's not doing anything special by using humans as circuits. All they're doing is opening/closing them when they're told to, which you can do with anything (like a synthesizer). Using humans and conductive paint adds absolutely nothing in this case.
Had the samples changed or had they been filtered differently by different movements of the bodies, so that you'd get a unique sound by having the models dance, or something, then it would've added something to the regular old opening and closing of circuits. Now it's just a cheap trick to hide the fact that he's doing nothing new.
So when is this out for the PS3 or Xbox, will the girls be shipped in a large container box.
No big box needed, they'll be inflatable, like most PS3 and Xbox users are used to.
this post sets the record for most hits on Engadget.
Thermal Grease

DONE
oh, and hot chics! I'm building this!! haha
"I thought about you and I wanna recant" SERIOUS!?!?!
Who's the lyrical genius behind this song?
This job wouldn't be so easy for this guy if he wasn't gay.
Outstanding. Being a music-lover and a dancer (unfortunately not much of a musician), I could see doing a LOT more with this kind of tech-mix.
I suppose for this to work, have to expose the girls MIDI section... (sorry--terrible pun)
I guess they don't do COVER tunes?
I wonder if they are touch sensitive?
Glad he didn't use WEIGHTED action...
(oh, I should stop now...)
This is relevant because of it being DIY tech? ...
yes, because we all love have useless hipster "inventions" shoved down our throats. Nothing more then a glorified light switch.
It's relevant because it makes geeks see semi-naked girls and be turned on by the technology behind...
Gotcha! It makes heterosexual male geeks happy.
This is why I love Sony sometimes, these guys will fund some of the most interesting (if not completely pointless) projects I've ever seen and not necessarily be aiming for some huge profit of sorts. Kudo's to anyone in the comments section that's purchased a Sony Rolly xD
Is this guy going to use this in anything specific? Or was this just a "what the hell, why not!" project?
I find this really useless. Why do women have to be naked to do this?
Because naked guys don't appeal to the majority of 22 - 35 year old gadget nerds.
theory = good
execution = interesting
actual guy = looks like a douche bag that should be punched in the face
story = meh
much less remarkable than expected.. Watch it with the sound off if you're so inclined not to follow your common sense
if calvin harris doesn't use this for live performance, i'm going to. :D
also, the lyrics are "ooh, i'm gonna buy shoes, then i'm ready for the weekend."
There's a difference between 'bikini models' and women willing to do stuff while wearing a bikini.
If he was really smart he would've put that paint on their As$%s.
Really
He favors Cliffy B
I realize this is a stupid question but if you're completing the circuit then why doesn't it shock you? Anyone with an understanding of this conductive paint please let me know. Crazy stuff though.
Gues he couldn't find enough girls with feeling for rithm since he is doing the hardest stuf himself lol
Great! What better way to objectify women than to make them into objects!
So why hands? Why not put the paint on breast or butt?
I also would like the 1st & the 3rd from the left thank you.
As much as a like cute scantily-clad girls, this is no more a "human synthesizer" than a person at a keyboard synth. All they're doing is closing circuits, which is exactly what you're doing when you press a key on a synth.
bikini hero coming soon....
This could make for some interesting choreography.
Nah, it wouldn't. It would be fun for children, though.
Thats the sorta gadget i need to store my harddrive.
Unbelievable. Dorks have come up with yet another way to touch pretty girls.
Hang on, we won't wire you up; we'll paint you instead. Could take hours...
No, we really need to laser scan your entire body in a bikini. Could take hours...
technologically - this is crap! Musically - this is crap!!!
This is nothing more than soft porn... There are much better sites than engadget for THAT!!!
I want my wasted time back please. lol
I think it's just ordinary black paint and there is a guy off camera with a keyboard creating the foley as the DJ guy touches the models for the explanation part.
Then for the performance, they just roll a recorded version of the track and everyone mimes.
Why do they have to be clothed?
so without looking up the lyrics, I heard "Oooh, I wanna F*** you, and I'm ready for the weekend" and thought to myself "wow, how fitting"
What a nerd way to get to spend time with a dozen babes in bikinis. Win!
Ok, I see a human interest story here someplace. I'm sure there is some kind of behavioral science study in the makings going on also , in a touchy feelly kinda way.
OK, I would lie if I said it is'nt interesting. But in a laughable sense.Hav
