Palm quietly improving Pre build quality, tweaking hardware
It's not the most comprehensive survey, nor is there any official confirmation, but the crew at PreThinking has checked in with a number of new Pre owners and discovered that Palm's apparently building its webOS handset better lately -- and what's more, it's even made some minor improvements. The biggest change appears to be a fix for that nasty bug that caused the Pre to reset or turn off when the keyboard was closed -- that bit of grey foam pictured was added to the battery compartment to tighten up the battery connection. There's a also word that the screen cracking and unintended rotation issues have been addressed, although time will tell on those, and the button color has changed from pearl to silver. As for improvements, well, there's a new battery model, and the Palm logo is now embossed on the carrying case. Yep, just little stuff, but it's good to see Palm addressing the build issues on the Pre, which are by far the most common complaint about the device. Let us know if you've spotted anything else, would you?

No, I didn't go off on a tangent- I merely informed you of my vast experience with GM vehicles, and that the bullshit you're trying to push (that they fall apart or are of subpar quality) is just that- bullshit. Stick to being an Apple shill, because you know absolutely nothing about the automotive world.
And what's your idea of debating properly? I want to know, because every time I make you look like a fool you go on about not debating properly.
You might be surprised how many (read: most) companies put a piece of foam in their battery compartment to hold the battery in place. I'd bet that the iPhone has some foam holding the battery in place, but it's a guess. I don't mind being proved wrong, I just know that every device I've ever owned had foam to hold the battery in place.
@iPoop
STOCK MARKETS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY
I have always liked Palm (I still have my Lifedrive) and its good to seem them with a proactive attitude now. Especially considering the lack of support when Vista came out.
AAPL stock price when up $2.58 day over day from yesterdays price at market closing.
Cheap plastic hardware can only be tuned so far. Its still cheap crap.
Plastic hardware? Really? Maybe cheap plastic casing, but the hardware is fine. besides, how exactly would you change the casing? the only improvement I could see is a trade of plastic for aluminum, and a shiny ass trackball
Using aluminum on a phone with a radio inside is bad. I'd rather have a signal... But I agree, the Pre comes off a little cheap in daily use. They could have easily built a sturdier product.... at least made that slider a little more robust. I mean, seriously...
please add a larger side keyboard.
I just exchanged my Pre today. All they gave me was a new phone (no retail box, not even a new battery). But my new Pre has the foam against the battery. Never noticed it in the old phone, so maybe I got a new one. Center button looks more silver too. It still seems to twist though, maybe not as bad. Don't see any dead/stuck pixels either, which is why I returned the last 3, all had stuck/dead pixels (and a nasty twist). finally happy!
I've had my Pre for a few weeks now, Pre's with a warranty date of 7/17/09 and later (check by entering ##786# into the dialer) are of higher quality. Mine is solid as a rock, or polished river stone I should say. Truly one of the best phone purchases I've made to date (had every HTC qwerty slider up till the Touch Pro, and an iSmug 3G) Dont go by the store display phones, one they get manhandled and two they are "pre" release builds. Now if Palm can address the poor power management of the latest firmware I'd have myself The Holy Ghost Phone (keep ur Jesus Phone)
Now that's some good info. Mine is an older model, but I have had no problems or complaints at all. Everything has worked as advertised from day one. And yes, I bought it on day one.
To all the apple people that look for Palm Pre news just so they can jump in an say something idiotic about the Pre..... F-OFF! This has nothing to do with your stupid lil phone.
How sure are you that's the warranty date confirms it? Because my newly exchanged Pre still has my old warranty date of 6/6 but i'm 99% sure its a new one. There is another date, recon date, that is 7/25 on this new Pre. And I picked it up from Sprint just a few days ago.
Sometimes i wonder why they early adopters of technology at all? Certainly the rest of us need people to buy a product at an inflated price to work out the kinks, and help drive down the price for the rest of us, but come on, everyone and i mean everyone should be on to this by now. One reason why you will never catch me sitting in line for anything.
I agree, it's crazy to be an early adopter!
However, then that piece of tech comes along that you just really want and well that's the end of my rational thoughts on the matter.
For me it was the xbox, google's G1 phone, and my Intel i7 920. I bought them all at launch, so I guess I'm not doing that bad if it's only an occasional thing.
I was an early adopter of the Pre--the first and only time I will do such a thing.
I upgraded to my first Pre on July 3. No real problems until I went on vacation, where the "oreo twist" effect quickly became pronounced and annoying. You could hear it moving while you press it to your face to talk on it. Also, the power button was loose and would not 'catch' when I pressed it.
Exchanged it when I returned home. No problems and the people were very friendly and understanding. I thought I had no problems with this one, until I realized that the "S" key only works if you press the bottom half. I am a week or so past 30 days so I can't decide between exchanging it for a refurb one or trying to deal. I had no idea how annoying it would be to go back and put in half your "S" characters [includes "-"] because the keyboard acts up. Holds up great other than that.
I braced myself for my first early adopter experience; I was expecting bugs in the software that would be worked out over time. I was looking forward to treating myself to something that looked cool [I'm not exactly flush with cash]. While I was ready for software glitches all day long, I really was taken by surprise and disappointed at the hardware issues I'm having. If that makes me naive I am willing to accept that judgement.
What's sad to me is that I passed on the new BlackBerry in favor of this, and now I wish I could take that decision back. BlackBerrys have a notorious internet reputation for high quality, but it just didn't look as *fun,* which is why I passed it up. I am really thinking about "upgrading" in one year instead of two and paying the extra $$ to get out of this phone, which is really too bad since it has a lot of great features.
Mike,
"can't decide between exchanging it for a refurb one or trying to deal."
Keep in mind the Pre is a very new product and most likely the "refurb" will probably be a device a customer returned because they decided it wasn't the right product for them and is in perfect working condition rather than a device that was broken, returned to Sprint, sent to Palm to be fixed and then send back to Sprint.
akm725,
True...I'm sure there are plenty out there from customers who simply didn't like the phone. I'm afraid, given my luck with this, that I'll end up with the one that was "refurbished" from one of the common hardware failures. Also--and I could be wrong, I've never exchanged/repaired a phone before this--I believe there is a $100 deductible to make this little deal happen. Part of me wonders if it's better to save that $ for a new phone sooner than I had anticipated.
I returned my Pre after a week...Blackberry Tour...nothing better
How about fixing the razor sharp edge at the bottom???
Razor sharp.... Really? Have you ran your finger across an actual razor? I've had zero issues with this 'razor sharp' edge. I must be Superman or something... ;-)
