Apple might be planning keynote for week of September 7th, might have new products on offer

We're hearing "multiple sources" are now reporting that Apple is most likely planning a keynote event -- possibly for the week of September 7th. There's also the requisite murmuring that one Steve Jobs may make an appearance -- though of course, there's also nothing more solid than wishes and fairy dust to back that one up. As far as possible product launches go, well, there have been significant whisperings about upcoming iPod / iTunes developments as of late, including the company's reported dealings with major record labels. This would fall in line with Apple's habit of releasing iPods every fall, and we've heard plenty about upcoming iPod touches which boast, among other things -- a camera and microphone. Daring Fireball has also reported that these bad boys will come in 16, 32 and 64GB varieties running $199, $299, and $399, respectively. In more salacious gossip, there's the possible Apple tablet we've been hearing about, but there's no solid word on any products for now. We'll be watching this one closely, we assure you.

Looking forward to comparing the new iPod Touch with the Zune HD.
Wow! Can't wait for Labor Day! ... and the next Apple event for the iMac refresh is on Thanksgiving, followed by a Mac Mini announcement on Christmas.
I'll be looking forward to buying a new laptop and getting the NEW touch for free on Sept 8th. Been holding out so I hope 9/7 is right..
Please, please release a SSD version of the iPod Classic with an OLED screen!
its always funny that apple is making sure we know about the new ipods b4 the zunehd comes out.
i just want to state this fact: i used to have an 8 gb touch. i love my zune but if apple comes out with a 64 gb touch b4 zune does microsoft is gonna lose out on my money.
i want a Zune HD with 64 gb!!! not a happy music lover.. b
@David
not gunna happen. the free ipod deal will not include the new models. at least it never has.
You guys need something better to look forward to.
@egress63
why would they make an flash version? OLED I could see, but not flash-based.
even if they wanted to, it'd be so expensive.
@egress
OMG OLED AND SSD OMG ZUNE KNOCKOFF. I love how you fanboys say that every zune is an ipod ripoff and now you guys want features in the new iPod that are in the new zune. lulz.
@Brian... unless it's no longer called an ipod touch there's nothing they can really do about it. Apple switches out their stock pretty much instantly so I'm not worried. An employee even told me I could buy the laptop/ipod and return it for a new one when they came out.
I am assuming that the new iPod will only be released after the Mac+Free iPod deal is over. I was actually thinking about buying a Macbook Pro a couple of months ago but decided against it for precisely this reason. I want the new iTouch and I figured I would be better off with a Thinkpad anyway.
@aaron
An OLED + SSD combination in the iPod *CLASSIC* would make it a Zune HD ripoff? WTF?
The Zune HD is a touchscreen device. the classic is not. Please read more carefully before you go around calling every tom, dick and joe a fanboy.
If you want the new ipod, buy your laptop now, sell your ipod brand new, and you can just purchase the new one when it comes out. You might have to pay like $50, but that's the only way I can think of.
Apple TV Take Three?
Please fix the sluggish 2.x software and stop ramming the iTunes store down my throat with the current GUI. I sync my own stuff there.
Oddly, I'm the reverse. I'd be very happy to buy an Apple TV if they will cut the price since I will use it to buy content from the iTunes Store (mostly movie rentals).
Oh, It's not the fact that you can buy from the iTunes store, that's a given.
It's just that they jam it down your throat as hard as possible. Big links on every screen, You go one step too far, BAM, you're suddenly in the iTunes store.
iPod killer.
iPhone 8GB please.
ipod killer, killer.
I'll be there only if Steve Jobs does the zombie walk.
THRILLLLLLLLEEEERRRR!!!!!

Apple == undersell & over deliver
Microsoft == oversell & under deliver
So much for the power efficiency of the mighty Tegra.
They better hope Apple didn't increase the new iPod touch battery life even further.
@MacVicta,
How many times are you really away from a power outlet for more then 24hrs? Unless your camping these divices last for a very long time already. Lower your screen brightness if you really need to make it last longer.
When your best jab at the ZuneHD is the battery life MS has already won.
@MacVicta: Thanks for the out of place, irrelevant comment, buuuuuddy!
@MacVicta: Oh, plus it's been confirmed that the battery life was a misprint. About the same on audio and 2.5 hours more of video. Suck on that.
"Suck on that"
Why would anyone "[s]uck on that"? What is it with idiot tech posturing. This stuff doesn't matter. Damn, it's like being back at school again...
@Kelmon: Sorry, you're right, I probably could have gone without adding that part. That said, it was slightly ridiculous for him/her to randomly throw in an attack(which turned out to be false) against a different product that has nothing to do with this story or with what the original commenter said. I apologize to anyone who was offended.
"Never apologize. It's a sign of weakness."
@noco37: That's true, I'm sorry... I mean... damnit!
Apple == undersell & over deliver - The iPhone was the only product that did this, every keynote since has been a letdown.
Microsoft == oversell & under deliver - XBOX360 seems pretty successful and something tells me Windows 7 will do ok too.
Apple == undersell & over deliver
MMS Wait for it.......................................
Not a single Apple product I bought lived up to the promised battery life, so I don't think Microsoft has a problem there.
BS, Sept 7th is a Monday
Daring Fireball? Who? They didn't even cite an anonymous source for that bit; it's clearly just conjecture.
So because you're not familiar with Daring Fireball or who John Gruber is, it's conjecture? How about you dig a little deeper first.
Especially considering he claims that the Zune HD won't have games or apps when it clearly says games IN THE FREAKING MICROSOFT STORE LISTING.
John Gruber is an idiot?
Anal bum covers for $7000! /Sean Connery
Wow. Daring Fireball is like an UAW with far less pictures. Jeez. Every post is about Apple, and the post about the new iPod Touch's was just in reaction to the Zune HD. It's like me saying, "Yeah that product is really good, but in the future, another company (the one I talk about all the time) is going to make a far cheaper and superior device. Nya nya."
I mean come on. The guy goes on a rant about the fact that "Marketplace" doesn't fit entirely on the screen. Extremely anal-retentive if you ask me.
John Gruber is the man and his information is quite often right.
@Mike10010100
first, Gruber is a great blogger, but some people don't like him because he's very Apple-centric. What I like about him is he backs up his opinions with little things called "facts" and "references" that some opinion bloggers tend to leave out. Big deal. If you don't like what he says, don't read it.
And I totally agree with him on the Marketplace gripe. As a graphic designer, it bothers me. I can see using the oversized text display meme to base a menu system on. I get that, but it's inconsistent user interface design to have one menu option out of several use the overflowing text graphic design device while the rest of the text fits on screen. Poor UI design.
@jimmy
Indeed. Since he is quite happy to take Apple to task when they screw-up (and, let's be honest, they've been doing that a bit over recent years) I trust his opinion. Some "blind Apple fanboy" he is not and certainly not an idiot. He's also now posting that the mythical Tablet won't be seen this year, which is a bit of a shame.
...and it's not been confirmed that it's going to have apps as well, so he was doubly wrong. I'm sorry to his supporters, but when the guy says things that are clearly and officially false, it's kinda hard to believe his other claim from the same story with no listed basis.

Zak, even if this person may have said some things that became true, does it mean that these rumors are true? After all, Engadget, a place that many people call reputable, had reported many times that the Beatles would be available on iTunes soon. Some sources were from McCartney. But those rumors were all proven to be false, here are just a few links (I remember there being a few "This year during the Superbowl", "We know we said it last year, but it is really being announced at this Superbowl", "Sorry about last year's predictions, but this year...")
http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/09/beatles-catalog-coming-online-at-long-last/
http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/16/mccartney-pretty-sure-the-beatles-will-go-digital-next-year/
http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/01/steve-jobs-presenting-in-london-at-emi-event-beatles-rumors-flo/
Is it wrong to be a bit skeptical about these types of rumors?
May your usual personal attacks commence...
@Mark
To be perfectly honest, I can't tell you whether you or John are right on this issue. The problem here is that Microsoft hasn't confirmed anything yet. We already know that applications and games are, apparently, coming for the device but we have no information about how many (if any) will be available on launch day, what they will be, and when the platform will be opened up to everyone else, which is the most important thing.
On the 15th September then all will be known and then you can feel free to discredit John Gruber. Until then it all seems rather pointless.
I'm bored with Apple
Then why are you commenting here?
i'm bored with your mum...
almost.
Doubt it is the 7th as that is Labor Day.
