Rock Band 2 for the Wii was able to do this since it hit stores a year ago. I've bought about 30 songs from the Rock Band store, and none of them are on my Wii's internal memory.
Rockband 2? Bah. I already gave a more damning "not news" example: Excite Truck is a LAUNCH TITLE that supported custom MP3 soundtracks directly from SD card. It's just like all the news about MS "finally" allowing games to require the HDD when they have had an exception for MMOs all along (including FF XI).
For those looking for a device strictly for reading, the new Kobo is a nice little option. It's small enough to slip into a pocket, can do more with a PDF than the competition, and at $129, it's $10 cheaper than both the Nook and Kindle WiFi.
