RED ONE mounted to UAV, flown around San Juan Island (Update: false alarm, it's a Panasonic)
Never one to miss a chance to feature action-packed UAV footage on this space, here we have a behind-the-scenes look at the new Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band video for you. While it ain't exactly Hearts of Darkness or Burden of Dreams, sometimes there are more important things than pathos, obsession, and heartbeak -- in this case, up close and personal shots of AerialPan Imaging's custom-built remote control camera rig, complete with mounted RED ONE HD video camera. Not too many technical details for you, but there is enough remote controlled helicopter excitement to make you wish you were on location at San Juan Island with one of these bad boys. Check it out for yourself after the break.
Update: As one of our colleagues (and a couple eagle-eyed readers) so graciously pointed out, the camera mounted to the helicopter has the tell-tale markings (peep the on-board mic) of a Panasonic HVX200. Thanks, kids!

This is absolutely amazing! I love film and this looks awesome :D
I'm sure it does . . . if you don't mind intercut chromatic aberration and highlight clipping. Maybe the intended audience won't notice, though.
Fancy equipment can help make a great product but isn't a guarantee.
Holy CA batman!
Hand me a can of the shark repellent bat spray!
JPW, not sure what you mean by intercut chromatic aberration, but chromatic aberration exists in the glass, which also is used on film cameras. true a digital sensor can show it off more, but the color separation you see here is in the color correct, not the footy.
I liked the grading on that... :)
What is this movie thing? Nice HD rig haha.
those guys have so much balls to fly it over water like that.
You'd be amazed what a trained RC helicopter pilot can do, a stable hover is cake! Add in the fact that this sucker's purportedly 'unmanned', which probably translates into, 'gyro-stabilized onboard flight controller', and it's probably pretty easy for an experienced RC pilot. Unless they forget to tighten all the screws with threadlock. :)
According to the guys who made the video the chopper had a vx200 in it, not a red... They also shot with a red, but it wasn't in the chipper...
Sorry, that's HVX200.. and that's from Michael Ragen's comment here: http://www.vimeo.com/5972527

So much fail :-P
Hey there. I was there and shot that video. The heli can hold a RED but we didn't want to overload it, plus it was flying fast over water so there was some risk assessment involved as well...

That's got the whole story and an interview with the heli operator.
Wow, wish I was there, I live on Fidalgo Island!
The UAV actually has a Panasonic HVX-200 in it, not a RED (you can tell by the lens shroud and by the tech holding it in his hand). Still has a sweet look though, and the video as a whole looks pretty awesome.
I thought it looked familiar! I've got an HVX200 at my office here. The lens was a giveaway for me.
Maybe take the "story" down when it gets called as a fake, or hell maybe do some research first !
I just wanted to let you guys know that the camera mounted to the UAV is not the Red One, but it it is a Panasonic HVX-200.
To the untrained eye, amateur, noob, or any other beings inferior to myself it is any easy mistake to make.
For the sake of full disclosure, however, I will admit that in this case it was not only my expansive database of knowledge of, ... well ... everything that led me to this conclusion. I had picked up on some hints that this may not be a Red One from the frontpage update, then followed by a comment made by one Adam on this very page, and finally solidified by Garretcode's comment which led me to access my immense library of understanding of all things both technical and non-technical and identify this epic failure executed by the good folks at Engadget.
So just to be clear, for all of those out there who were not astute enough to have recognized the error, I have clearly pointed it out.
Fail.
Really daarrrling!!!! Puffs from cigarette.
I don't see why anyone else could not have picked up on it. HMMMM!!!! Yes... Yes.....
Cause you know what daaarrrrling....
because it was already pointed out by many and link provided we do not need your astute and immense database of knowledge. HMMMM Yes... Yes.... Take another put from cigarette.
And frankly if your immense database of knowledge that you so claim to have you would not needed confirmation of that type of camera it was or is your astute database of knowledge google? HMMMM!!!!!
But frankly daaarrrrling...... it all comes down to one conclusion from the response that you gave.....
We don't give a damn!!!!!! HMMM!!!!! Yes.... Yes.....
See what I did their? Come down from your high tree because guess what.... you are not all that. Good day. I SAID GOOD DAY!!!!!!
Sounds like you've been reading The Onion a bit too much. (That's a compliment, BTW.)
Actually no. But I do like the Onion and thank you for the compliment.
It's only a Panasonic, then? Nothing to see here. Let's all move along.
It's still a fantastic camera - I've shot with it many times (upgrading from the 100) and it performs like a champ every time. I've seen news stations start using them more too.
What was the music? Sounded like maybe either 'The Beta Band' or a more upbeat 'Cursive', but not a song I'm familiar with.
What's the deal if it's a RED ONE?
basically its the best prosumer video cam you can get right now before you step up to the full on professional equipment.
If it was a RED ONE the UAV would probably have to be 4 times larger, those cameras are pretty heavy.
"Our UAV is online"
RED ONE, Panasonic...same thing right?
/sarcasm... i hope?
There is no way that bird would get off the ground with a RED ONE. They are as heavy as a film camera with a decent magazine.
It could but we chose not to. see comment above.
I don't get why this is news?
People have been mounting cameras to helicopters, both full size and model helicopters since they were invented.
There are tens if not hundreds of companies around the world that specialise in just building the rigs and renting them out.
Lies! All Lies! It's next gen's next gen Red One lipstick model in an HVX shell!
Does anyone know the UAV manufacturer or model?
Oh. Pfft! It's just a Panasonic! It's okay everyone! Nothing to see here. Please disperse!
