ROS: a common OS to streamline robotic engineering
The biannual International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence has this year shed light on a new effort to standardize robot instructions around a common platform, so that designers won't have to "reinvent the wheel over and over" with every project. Presently, robot design is undertaken in an ad hoc fashion, with both hardware and software being built from scratch, but teams at Stanford, MIT and the Technical University of Munich are hoping to change that with the Robot Operating System, or ROS. This new OS would have to compete with Microsoft's robotics offering, but the general enthusiasm for it at the conference suggests a bright future, with some brave souls even envisioning a robot app store somewhere down the line. Video after the break.

Creepy face.
Couldn't they just use "android". Ba doom! Ding!
That robot looks ... evil
That robot in the picture looks like ones in iRobot, the movie that stared Will Smith. Except this one is creepier...
"I did not murder him!"
No contractions, right?
Mother fuckers. This has Skynet written all over it.
after you buy the artificial intelligence app. the robot itself will buy the kill humans app.
My iPhone already has this app! :))
The baby-shaking app was a training app for the robots that slipped out to the public too soon...
"Hey sweet mama, you wanna kill all humans?"
At this point, are we sure God doesn't want us to die?
"'For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone,' declares the Sovereign LORD. 'Repent and live."
It's not God who wants us to die, it's us who don't want God, who just happens to be the source of life. Oops.
Interesting concept hope it comes into play. Also I'm over the skynet jokes on robot articles
jokes?
I think the this would become a better unification than Microsoft, because it would be more likely to be open and non-profit.
May I also add that I am not an anti-corpoerate hippie, and I do like Microsoft, but I see Microsoft turning it out as a product, while these universities would turn it into an open source project.
I agree, this definitely should be open-source for the sake of ingenuity and flexibility in regards to the huge variety of robot (cybernetic organism?) projects.
dont be dumb
Isn't that the son of the robot from Daft Punk's "Technologic"?

Yes he is.
This has useless written all over it.
wow. how is this useless at all
get rick ross to advertise it.. RAWSSSSSSSSSSSsssssssss
That's what the robots in "I, Robot" should have looked like.
"I did not murder him! Actually, I did! Heh, heh, heh!"
What about H-OS? That seemed to work well.
I'm thinking he looks more like Mr. Burns, even has the hand rub down... "Excellent..."
Is that robot look like NS-5 from I Robot?
We just need someone to block all the "Kill Humans" apps from the app store.
On the grounds that it replicates core functionality :P
this already exist a long time ago !!! this called URBI language for lot of Robotics like AIBO, lego Mindstorm , and many others ! this is not new at all !!!!

Just what we need...making it easier for robots to communicate to each other
The advent of Singularity....the pre-runner to the Terminator, Matrix, I-Robot, Eagle Eye, Surrogate.. Some people say thoughts like this is garbage..but think for a minute ..1. Self -aware = ability to to have choice..2. cand by that fact ..wouldn't choice imply the option to do good or evil .
Well if it has an app store good news, then we can just develop a kill-a-robot app for the iPhone and doomsday is averted :)
The real deal developing robots is:
a) The interconnection between the computer and analog system.
b) Algorithms to determine situations and input.
c) Cost.
So, the OS is pretty irrelevant, in fact, many robots runs without any specific OS (Such PLC machine) or under a limited linux distro (using ARM processor) if not directly programmed in the cpu (for example using a "el cheapo" PIC 10mhz processor)
While I applaud the idea of standardization I also worry about bloat if they need to have hooks for every possible bot application out there. Going to be a bummer if it takes Megabytes or Gigabytes of storage for an OS if your robots programming can be measured in kilobytes.
Check out the Dell Mini 9 at 1:12...
This make me think about ghost in the shell the: S.A.C that show seems so real to me
this is why wew should leave robotics to japan, or we end up making creeper robots
