Palm seems to be making an active, conscientious effort to say as little as it can about the
GSM version of the Pre, possibly in an effort to give Sprint as much spotlight as possible before its exclusivity expires -- but as we all know, it's real and it's coming. Thing is, Palm has always implied that it's being limited to European duty with a 3G radio that fails to cover bands that are of any interest to North Americans, so what the heck is this noise all about? Multiple certification bodies are now reporting the existence of a Pre model number P100UNA, as opposed to the P100UEU that's launching in Europe -- and it doesn't take a lot of detective work to gather that those codes on the end stand for "North America" and "European Union," respectively (for the record, the CDMA version on Sprint is P100EWW, so it ain't that). One distinct possibility is that Palm's preparing a version to cover Bell's new HSPA network since the carrier is Palm's exclusive Pre launch partner in Canada and they're smack in the middle of a transition from CDMA -- and needless to say, if that's the case, there'll be an unprecedented effort to get that sucker unlocked on the double.

I hope ATT. I'm not taking a side, but I'd like to see the Pre and iPhone fight it out on even footing
iPhone sold over a million within the first weekend of the release. Pre was already knocked down before the fight! :) With Palm losing money every quarter, there won't be a Palm's Post device I'm afraid. ;) ;)
Where do people get the iphone sales numbers. For a while I was seeing that iphone sold a million in the first month and now it's a million in the first week. I have a very good memory and I remember the iphone starting slow so I looked it up. Seems it took three months to sell .27 million. So far the Pre sold .2 million in it's first month and .1 million in the second month. Even if they sell zip in August they will have outsold iphone quarter for quarter.
This doesn't mean it will keep up that pace but still let's use real numbers in our discussions shall we?
Apple announced they sold over a million after 3 days of the release. All I hear about Palm is how much money they are losing every quarter! :) Here is the iPhone sales report from Wall Street Jounal..

"iPhone sold over a million within the first weekend of the release"
And how many countries were involved (88 + online purchases).?
The pre? 1 country and limited online sales.
nuft said, comparison is apples to oranges & we talked about this way too much.
Back to the subject: AT&T would be cool, but Palm has a tradition to go Sprint, then Tmo or Verizon.
BUT what would be shocking is if they offer it contract free for like $399.
It's okay to be a fanboy but let's not make things up. I certainly don't make things up about over a million sales! 88 countries you're talking about is their targeting goal! iPhone 3GS is in short supply and the first weekend release involves primary US and a few european countries. In that sense, iPhone sales would explode once Apple reaches their goal -- that is 88 countries along with China. I predict Apple's stock valuation would surpass Microsoft sometime next year!
Totally agree! + the touch pro 2 should be coming soon too, its like the most awesome mobile bawl ever!
Chevy > Could you please explain to me why you think this is good? I own neither device, but have no idea why people seem to think no competition is a great thing.
I assume you are literate enough to know that Apple drops prices and adds copy and paste and the like in response to competition... and naturally the vice versa has kickstarted all sorts of improvements in OTHER phone OSes. This even applies to netbooks -- if you hate Linux, you can still go, 'whew, glad enough people are falling for it for Microsoft to knock $200 dollars off the prices for Windows for netbooks.'
All these sentiments of "hurray, my preferred device will eliminate the competition and gain a monopoly" seem... shortsighted to me. Is there really any reason to desire such an outcome?
This is definitely not coming to Bell as an HSPA phone
Bell already has stock of the cdma/evdo version and will be shipping it out to stores soon
So the iphone sold 270 000 in 3 months? Interesting figure, junior. Do you have a source?
what are you talking about? i didnt say anything about the iphone..
How about one without a camera???
Maybe they want to make a gsm world phone.
I too hope for at&t. I am starting to get sick of seeing all of these iPhones. Lets diversify people.
at&t cant have the iphone and the pre.
Sure it can, it just has to fork over enough cash.
The mass budget cuts at Palm resulted in someone accidentally saying that Verizon was GSM, and no one noticed the mistake until it was far too late...
I believe the "U" means unlocked.
ROGERS! Or it could be that Bell, the network that Palm chose for Canada, is switching over to GSM late this year.
They're not switching to GSM. They're overlaying a UMTS network, and it will be UMTS only, no backward compatibility.
EWW stands for Exclusively World Wide... uh?
While UEU and UNA should stand for "universal" as in unlockable.
Let me dream, please!!
Wait wait... = Exclusive Wireless W... shit.
I'll figure it out.
EV-DO World Wide.
if it was exclusively world wide then it really wouldn't be exclusive now would it be? Unless cell phones exist on mars or perhaps uranus
The "World Wide" refers to the band that the phone can operate on.
It can operate on several CDMA carriers overseas as well.
Toni: hardly anyone uses CDMA outside of the US and they few that do (Japan, Korea) operate a different flavor of CDMA and is not compatible with the US version. The only viable platform internationally is GSM and usually this means unlocked.

But don't get me wrong, I'm a proponent of HSDPA as well. I won't get it from Bell simply the fact that it's CDMA.
Why don't they just sell it unlocked? There are people who rather pay full price than being tied to a silly contract ...
there is no way in hell i am signing up with bell, i don't care if this is the greatest phone ever made
Same here in Germany with the O2 network. Their coverage is so lousy, they even need to use T-Mobile roaming to improve their coverage.
So North America gets NA, European Union gets EU, and Sprint gets... "eww"?
Somebody at Palm obviously doesn't care for Sprint.
U = UMTS.
Same goes for the T850UEU and T850UNA, which is the UMTS Treo Pro Euro and North America respectively.
i bet tmobile- if att wants to keep apple they will stay away far far away from the pre
Not T-Mobile. The Pre doesn't support UMTS 1700.
It could very much be for Telus whose HSPA (data)/UMTS (voice) network is soft-launching on September 2nd according to media reports.
I was thinking Bell.. They're going HSPA this year. Who knows, the device release might coincide with their official announcement.
Woot! Hopefully an unlocked version comes around soon.
Time will tell,....
@TonyCipriani: How do you know what bands the US version supports?
Dammit, Engadget, fix your comment system!
No, YOU fix the comment system!
...sorry, that was uncalled for.
(Engadget's comment system broke, this is the second time the reply doesn't work...)
1. If you download the webOS doctor which contains the Pre ROM, you'll find in there a tarball called castleumtsfw.tar, which I presume is the firmware. Inside, you'll be able to find out that the Pre uses the Qualcomm MSM6260, which Qualcomm suggests it is a QuadBand GSM for 850/900/1800/1900 and Tri-Band HSDPA 850/1900/2100.
Reference:http://www.qualcomm.com.br/news/releases/2005/050314_msm6260.html
2. Treo Pro had three SKUs, T850UNA, T850UEU and T850EWW, with the UEU and UNA units being GSM for Europe and North America, and EWW being the CDMA unit. If Palm follows the same naming scheme, which seems so by the sound of things, the UNA and UEU units are actually the same with the difference of localization firmware, both does 850/1900/2100 HSDPA. As Dieter at PreCentral points out. Palm is too strapped on cash, so it would be stuipid to have two sets of hardware.
In fact I sent those items to Dieter, if you don't believe you can ask him... ;)
Hey, you guys should start a petition or something to get Engadget to fix the comment system, works every time!
(Don't actually do it unless you want to get banned. I did but I managed to get back my commenting privileges due to Engadget's crappiness.)
At&t would be nice I would love to give it a shot even with the subpar keyboard(atleast it has one).
I somehow doubt it will come to big blue. They are addicted to the iPhone we know that, how many articles have we seen about that.

Surely, like Treos past, it will be available on all major US services as soon as the exclusivity runs out.
Clearly it's for use on Miquelon.
Hah, the Palm calls the Sprint version "Eww".
If Bell gets the GSM/HSPA Palm Pre, there is no way I'm not getting it. World support is fairly important to me, I do want to be able to use my phone outside of Canada and the US. Though I'm fairly skeptical, seems a little early for the Bell's new network to be functional.
You need to wait for Telefonica O2.
