Paul Sr. demonstrates OCC's electric chopper, Fox News seems mystified
Paul Teutul Sr. may not be the most eloquent of men, but he's good at what he does and has developed quite a following both on and off the reality TV circuit. Apparently none of those followers work at Fox News, as he got something of an odd reception when going on air there to show off Orange County Choppers' latest creation: the Siemens Smart Chopper. A different sort of bike than either the Zero S or Brammo we've ridden this year, the Chopper has a 27hp electric motor and a top speed of over 100mph while still managing a 60 mile charge. It sports LED lighting and recycled components to further up its green cred, a combination that seems to, for some reason, raise the ire of the hosts of Fox and Friends. Or maybe they're just trained to always sound loud and incredulous. Decide for yourself in the video after the break.

Chopper Style
"Even our building is 52% above... green."
What's green supposed to mean these days? lol
He really isn't a very good TV personality if he isn't yelling.
Siemens between his legs
@ Donut
Maybe he means it actually produces 52% more energy than it uses?
I would guess it surpasses LEED specs by 52%
The bigger question is, why would you go on F&F to talk about your new, innovative, state-of-the-art product and have no idea what to say. And the hosts (everyone on Fox News is a Host or Commentator, they don't have reporters) were just plain uninformed. If you're hosting a 60 second promo spot on a morning show, you don't ask a question you don't already know the answer to. No time for that...
For a second I thought that was hulk hogan...BRoTHeR!
"its really...environmental...made for...you know...clean...who gets what?"
- He needs to stop staring at fox's gigantic jugs.
@ Jimmy
As a reporter/correspondent/talking head/whatever you want to call it, you ask a lot of questions you know already know the answers to. You ask questions your viewers need to hear, even basic ones, to give your guest good jumping-off points to speak. This type of show is not a hard-hitting news show. It applies to people from all walks of life who are starting their day. The questions are almost always basic to appeal to the lowest common denominator - you and me, the viewers.
sadly Valicore is the only one that got right. Damn everyone is brainwashed.
lol jon, that was awesome.
BBC World Service!
I don't know what everyone is bitching about. The spot told me: the range, charge time, top speed, and the cost. That's 4 more pieces of real information than most storys on EVs manage to have.
Too many liberal hippies here that haven't had to pay taxes and live in the real world. You'll learn soon enough...socialists...
@John P -
It's not that - Paul Sr. isn't the most articulate of people.
And that combined with the intellectual questions coming from the Fox Crew - it makes for one hell of a conversation.
Fox News = Epic fail
Actaully,
Morning Shows = Fail
Fox News = epic rating and viewership numbers (even if you hate them they have more viewers than anyone else)
Oh BTW, Fox hate is getting old.
The epic ratings that Fox News receives just proves how many morons are in this country. I'm not even taking it on the liberal vs conservative issue either. I'm talking about the fact that it is so biased and news is supposed to be unbiased.
agreed, fox hate is old.....
How busy is that video? It's like the web C.1999. Flashing banners, rotating graphics. Uggh.
Fox does have some great ratings. But Fox hating will never get old. They keep airing completely blithering, sniveling, bloviating idiots who'd hurt themselves if they ever decided to do a fact check. Has some pretty good shows tho
@sacapuntas
No it's not, ignorance is. FOX SUCKS!!
Since it has the most viewers, then isn't Fox-love getting old?
Cluster Fox...
I love Paul Sr. with his facts and figures - they guys back at the shop must be laughing their asses off - a Million Dollar Bike, and the 52% above green. I am laughing 52% of my ass off.
FAIL
Why not use your brain and take all news sources with a bit of logic and discernment. Honestly some of Fox's shows are a little outrageous but just knowing what someone else believes is educational. I notice how everyone always calls the hosts on Fox News shows names, is that really mature and intellectual? Also you should be aware that places like "factcheck.org" and other 'fact-sites' have agendas and can mislead you just as easy as Fox supposedly does. MSNBC, CBS, and Fox all have some problems but I would say that Fox offers a much wider variety of opinions like Glenn Beck (aww, down rank me now. hehe) I just wish Alan Colmes was still there, he was a very well spoken liberal. I digress, vary your media sources and use some logic and free thought, you should turn out fine.
Also, lay off the hate...
@alex
The problem is that other news networks such as MSNBC is that they do not do the work required of a real journalism outfit before they report something. A recent example was when I was watching MSNBC a few days ago they were talking about how horrible Conservatives were because they were bringing posters of Obama with a Hitler mustache - after all, only Conservatives are fighting at town hall meetings, correct? However, if MSNBC would do a little investigation before pointing the finger at Conservatives, they would have noticed that the posters had "Lyndon LaRouche" (if you don't know, LaRouche is so far left, he makes Obama look Reagan-esque) printed at the bottom of the posters. One person carrying the poster was seen the day before handing out literature for Dingle (D-Mich). But they don't investigate, just use the typical scapegoat of Republicans for doing something that they do not approve of (and no, we do not approve of showing Obama as Hitler).
But Fox makes up the news? Is this not MSNBC making up news? Take a one horrible occurance, don't try to find out the real story, and blame an entire group.
And people say I love Microsoft, and hate everything else...
Thank goodness school starts back next week.
Most of 'em, [these goobers] will just now be getting off the bus.
@NoHOne
And don't forget the MSNBC drone that lied on camera and said that Obama wasn't pushing to eliminate private insurance, even though the lady he was attacking correctly pointed out that she saw the actual video of him saying it.
The video has been available for weeks on YouTube, and viewed millions of times.
Actually Derrick, Glenn Beck says he is NOT a reporter. He is a man with an opinion. He shares what he believes are the facts and also shares his opinion. Just because someone disagrees with you does not make him an idiot. I also encourage you to look honestly at what he is saying. Fascism is coming to America (if it is not already here) I urge you look at the evidence behind what Beck says. Much of it is true, although I don't mindlessly follow him, nor do I believe anyone should. This is coming from someone who doesn't like Bill O'reilly and enjoyed Alan Colmes. Call me strange but I like to vary my media sources and think for my self. :|
I try to stay away from these discussions. Safe to say that I'm on the side of logic, and I hate most of the news networks. The only place I trust for actual news is Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart, because they are the only ones in the industry who are paid to make fun of everyone, left and right.
Who even watches Fox, MSNBC, or any of the other news channels for that matter. Why all the social commentary and fluff? Why watch these people jabbering on about issues that they don't understand? Honestly, the best place to get facts is the internet. Reputable sources with facts are much better than talking heads trying to make you internalize their point of view.
Just get the facts out there and let the people make the decisions. It's quite obvious on both sides when news is simply fluff. I hardly ever watch the news any more, unless something important is happening (natural disaster, shooting, big important things...) because if there isn't something big going on, you can bet they're going to make tons of political points throughout their 24 hour broadcast. As the saying goes, idle hands are the devil's playthings.
It was obvious from this video that the news casters had no idea that Paul was being sarcastic about the price. That is hilarious in itself.
@ Look_Around_You
Could you link me to that?
I don't hate FNC for being right wing cheerleaders, any more than I hate MSNBC for doing the same thing on the left, that's their job.
I hate fox news for showing that there's more money in loud partisan slapfights, than there is in showing actual news.
Just like I hate reality TV for showing that there's more money in people yelling at each other than there is in scripted, or informative programing.
Just like I hate pop crap music for proving the profitability of 3 minute singles written according to sales algorithms.
I feel justified in my hate.
Mainstream American News Media = EPIC fail. None of then are any good: Fox couldn't make a left hand turn if its life depended it and MSNBC has gotten EXTREME in its left-wingedness. They're all just more distraction to keep us occupied little worker-bees.
First, this article is mistitled. If you watch the video (and I watched it live), Fox had to tell remind Paul a few things about the bike, they weren't "mystified". The Fox-hate truly is aged and unwarranted. Watch them all. Read the anchor's books and quit judging by what the "cool" crowd says.
Wow, all I did is say "use your brain" when getting information from media sources. Who knew it was so despised to think? I suspect the reason I was down ranked was because I said I liked a show on Fox *gasp*. If you don't believe that getting different points of view is good go ahead and watch your singular news source and remain ignorant. I honestly don't take anybody's word as absolute truth that is in the media. Explain to me why I am so crazy?
I watch BBC world news.
@tony
Nice, call me and others names! That is a show of your rhetorically based idiocy. I said not to blindly follow anyone, INCLUDING FOX! Just because I like someone on Fox News doesn't mean I am drinking the kool-aid. Get real, or come up with some real reasons why I am an 'idiot'. Of course you might have been being sarcastic, although I highly doubt it...
Sadly Valicore is the only one who got it right, damn everyone is brainwashed
@NohOne I didn't say MSNBC didn't have the same bias on some of their shows, cause they do. He mentioned FOX News so that's what I brought up.
@alex
I did make a post spreading blame among all news outlets (including FNC), but it was deleted along with a number of other posts.
Actually, yes, Glenn Beck is an idiot!
The Daily Show did a nice little summary of his "facts" yesterday by showing slightly older clips of him badmouthing American healthcare as "among the worst in the world" and then the most recent footage where it suddenly becomes "the best in the world".
There was another time where he contradicted himself in a span of 3 minutes when talking about Obama. First, he accused him of being racist ("I think Obama hates white people") and then, "Look, I am not saying Obama is a racist". That is a DEFINITION of IDIOCY!
@alexmueller
as opposed to CNN which of course is completely unbiased *rolls eyes*
All of these major media outlets have their own agenda to push, they are not Right of Left, they are only looking after themselves. They want you to view the world through their own respective lenses. Fortunately for me I have seen the world from behind the sight of a rifle, so my while my view is fairly limited, its a lot sharper than any one that these Network News stations could hand me all nice and neatly wrapped up. Journalism is almost dead, you have to make up your own mind about what is and is not "news". There are ways to do it, it is just that no one has time to do it. We are all so damned "busy".
Oh and one more piece of advice passed on by my old Sergeant Instructor.
Your political views are like your genitals. There are instances when it is appropriate to share them with another person. However in most cases it is best that you keep them to yourselves.
That one goes out to everyone and the writers as well.
To Mike = Epic Fail. Obama supporting punk lefty communist
Wow...Showing our political bias here much? Lets keep this site free of political commentary and focused on GADGETS...
I agree!
I think it's well known and generally accepted that Fox news isn't exactly the truthiest of news outlets, FFS, they make the UK Daily Mail look fair and accurate reporting. Didn't they win a court case recently that stated they could basically make the stories up?
By the way (where's the freakin' edit function?!?) I really like the chopper. So what if it doesn't sound like a typical OCC bike? Looks sweet and goes up to 100 MPH for 60 miles on a charge! Standard 110 volt charging system is also nice...
"Go google the Standford study"
Tried it, didn't get anything related to Fox News. I think you're going to have to post a link if you think anyone will believe you.
How is making fun of morning news people politically biased?
@CtrlBurn: I wonder where Luke's comment went...Very strange...
@franktinsley: It wouldn't be politically biased if it wasn't for the specific jabs at FOX which were quite uncalled for...Personally, I didn't see any trace of ire or being loud and incredulous.
Making fun of idiots on TV isn't political...John Stewart makes fun of the idiots at CNN all the time and it has nothing to do with politics.
Yes, but John Stewart is on a COMEDY channel...It's his JOB to make fun of people. That's not the case here...
I agree as well. Gizmodo pulled this kind of crap last week and I haven't visited their site since.
Meh... saying nothing/silent approval of FOX, is a much more political statement than bashing them.
I don't see any of your perceived "odd reception." I do see two morning news hosts who are trying to be painfully chipper and happy, though.
Really!? Get out of here!?
/r /s
Chipper and stupid more like.
Cool looking bike... as for Fox and Friends... the interviewer just has a dry sense of humor... no harm no foul.
"Lets' starts up the engine!"
*vrrwooohsh....*
"ehhhh.... yeah....it's kinda quiet..."
I wish my neighbor had this one at 6am.
Fox News anchors being skeptical of progress and innovation? I'm shocked!
It's electric??? THEY CAN DO THAT?!?!
Faux News doesn't understand this new-fangled electricity technology.
your reading to much into it. they're just always loud like most of these morning new show hosts, plus they are outside so that might have been the reason why the guy sounded like he was yelling the entire time.
Did I fail to see something? Where's the "ire" from the Fox News hosts?
love the sarcasm. a million dollars. ha. Sounds like Paul was not thrilled about the stupidity of fox news team.
heh.... yeah... th-th-those stupid fox reporters, heh, no sarcasm, s-s-so stupid....
*puts away Check for a million dollars*
hehe
Bike looks sweet, especially considering that it was hand-fabricated, but Paul shouldn't start working as a spokesperson any time soon...
I agree...Paul Sr. may be on TV constantly but at least with the show they can edit so it flows smoothly...I don't think he's cut out for live TV...
Why did I just make myself watch this Fox News clip? Now I think I need a Silkwood shower.
If only Fox News had those impartial news people like Olberman and "Chill Up My Leg" Matthews.
Ha ha, I never thought Paul Sr could look so smart in contrast ... It's ELECTRIC?!?!? lol
Fox News = Absolute Epic Fail And not for the fact that they are the puppeteers of the american public, but because for the biggest news company on TV they sure do have lame reporters with next to no skill.
Sweet bike though! but come on Paully Sr. a MILLION DUCKS??? no way Jose!
Sounded to me like the hosts were trying to get Paul Sr. to talk a little. He didn't seem to know what he was talking about.
Paul: "You're missing the other 90% of the bike, which is a futuristic bike."
Host: "What's futuristic about it? Show me the future. Let's walk around it."
Paul: "Just the fact that it runs on batteries."
Nice.
The questions they asked were all legitimate and all questions that any newsperson would have asked, such as, "Isn't this everything you're against. Aren't you about a loud engine....". Very legitimate questions that should have occurred to anyone with a brain.
So, someone at Engadget doesn't like Fox News, eh?
hmmm, remove any labeling of what channel this is, and watch the clip again.... Yea, see that? The reporter is missing the damned point!
Normally I'd love to bash Fox News at any chance I get, but I didn't see anything wierd about this.
P.S. Lady in the yellow dress......i would. Lol
best interview i've ever seen fox news pull off
Seems to me that Paul Sr. was the one tripping through the interview. Fox reportes asked decent questions, I don't see what your problem is with them. Oh yeah, they must hate the earth because they are from fox news....
Seriously? You mentioned Fox on a GADGET site?
Why? What could it POSSIBLY add other than political jackasses on both sides going off on each other. Could you not have found ANY other YouTube video showing the bike? Seems highly unlikely to me.
The bike is kinda cool, but 60 miles seems short. That would BARELY get me to work and back each day, and what happens when the battery starts to go bad and lose charge.
Also, and this is important, does the bike start to slow down when the battery has low charge? Because that would definitely be a deal breaker when 60 miles just barely covers my daily commute. I don't want to have to push the darn thing the last mile because it is faster than riding due to a low charge.
Don't bring it to FL. Incredible tickets of the license plate being up and down instead of right to left.
So everything Fox News does is "epic fail"? It seemed like perfectly normal reporting to me. They are told to go out there and act like they are mesmerized, but in reality they probably weren't. I know I wasn't. Their job isn't to go out there and say "really, only 60 miles?" or "5 hour charge time? Thats forever!". Its to go out there and hype this bike these guys made for publicity. Sure you may not like Fox News, I don't care. Just don't act like everything they do is the stupidest thing ever. They have higher ratings than any other news network in almost every time slot, so its kind of hard to argue with that.
I don't see the failure of Fox's people anymore than I would expect from any news outlet. The only place you'd get people who weren't amazed or clueless would be from a dedicated environmentalist or EV geek. Fox certainly does have a reputation (well earned) for it's bias, but I don't see it here.
True story: I kicked Paul Sr's ass.
I don't see the issue either. Fox is definitely lowest common denominator, but not in this case.
You guys are sidelining what about the product? Will they mass produce or can they? And how much is what I'd like to know. Because this would be on my Christmas list!
Way to make yourself look smart & manly...
You think I"m going to watch something that says, "Fox"? ClusterFox Noise suxs.
"how much does it cost?"
'...a million dollars...'
"a million dollars? get out..."
Ah, Fox News or should I refer to it by its adopted new name "cluster fox". Still a useless means of obtaining slanted facts and information. And all the naysayers, you're mistaken, "Fox Hate" is very much alive and well. ;)
Why do people keep pretending there's such a difference between Republicans and Democrats? Their views are widely similar with the exception of a few social issues which shouldn't be the purview of federal government to decide anyway.
Here's a quick quiz to help you determine whether you're a Republican or a Democrat:
Do you believe that military spending should be increased, or do you feel that we should spend more on the military?
Do you believe in financial and military support for Israel, or should we support Israel financially and militarily?
Do you believe in domestic spying, or are you pro domestic spying?
Are you pro-corporate welfare, or for it?
Are you for lower taxes for the middle class, or pro lower taxes for the middle class?
Can we hold people indefinitely without charges, or should we preemptively detain suspects until we're sure they won't commit a crime?
hmmm...i think that quiz is more like a test to see if you'd love to live under a totalitarian regime. i am a republican and feel completely repulsed by all of those things and even the idea that the federal government has the power to do any of them.
all of the mainstream media outlets suck as news providers. all morning news is loud and incredulous. fox news gets the best ratings because the "news" channels are actually in the business of entertaining and they offer the most entertaining (and polarizing) personalities (not reporters) in the business.
this clip was no worse than anything else on at this time of day. the pace of the stories always ends up in clipped and comprimised information. that guy just keep up. he should have had a preset agenda for the conversation and rehearsed talking points, because that's the way news actually works these days.
I didn't really hear anything out of the ordinary. No comments were made when he said his building was 52% green (so that leaves 48% split between red and blue, right?). No cuts on an electric bike. What's your problem with it?
I don't think OCC even makes anything, especially on this. Sure some fender flares, gas tank , and some handle bars, but I really give it up for the guys making the performance parts and motors, not the guys painting smiley faces on the back end, while Paul Sr. reaps all the money.
I'm sure all his suppliers are being paid fairly for the products they sell to OCC. OCC is a premium brand, and should charge more. They fabricate all the metal in the shop, design the bikes, and market like crazy.
It's kinda like Apple, which is why some (like you) hate OCC. They take average internal parts, put them in a well thought out, beautiful package, and sell it at a premium.
It's called business. The guy that sold OCC that electric motor made his money the way he chose, and the OCC guys make their money by selling high-end bikes and tee-shirts. Relax.
Please, next time try to find a video from some other source. Any other source.
I didn't see anything in the Fox hosts that indicated "ire"but at the end they did seem "incredulous" but that was over the $1,000,000 price tag. And what do you get for your cool mil? A slick looking bike that can go 100 MPH for 60 miles and then you wait 5 hours for it to charge. My iPhone gets better mileage than that, and for significantly fewer dollars! I'm not surprised the Fox folks were incredulous.
I'm also not surprised that a geeky tech reporter would find fault when there was none. Disappointed that Engadget editors would allow the slur, but not surprised.
As others have said, stick to the tech... that's why your readers are here.
not a tech reporter, just a morning host. Don't offend reporters by comparing them to anyone on Fox.
And it's fairly obvious that Paul, Sr. was being sarcastic when he said a million, and the dude just ate it up.
Would be nice if it got more than just 60 miles on a 5 hour charge.
