Portable SNES mod is slick enough to hit retail
Sometimes mods go to such lengths that words like 'homebrewed' and 'DIY' no longer do them justice. Presenting the Nintendo SNES Portable. Not the first, and probably not the last of its kind, this bad boy mobilizes Nintendo's venerable console with a few buttons from a PSOne controller and a ridiculously detailed skinning job -- yes, even the packaging gets a makeover. The sheer nostalgic overload at the sight of it must be worth something to Nintendo, no? There's not a person, with both a heart and a history of gaming, that can glance at that bulky unwieldy-looking thing and not break into a wistful smile. Really, we dare you. More snaps after the break.

So can you just sell this and get away with it? Nintendo getting any money?
They've mocked up a retail box, they're not actually selling it...
Where is it for sale?
Yes, Nintendo got money when they sold the SNES console whose guts were donated and crammed into this glorious creation. It's a mod rather than a rip-off. Reselling it is no different than selling your old SNES imho.
yes, where do I buy it? Wal-mart?
"Is that a real train?"
I think it might have something to do with the same idea of songs loosing exclusity or movies having their copyright protection expiring (think mystery science theatre 3000). I believe it works sort of the the same way , where Nintendo didn't renew something they didnt feel like renewing, due to it being a legacy system that isn't sold retail anymore.
That's ridiculously bulky. They shoulda made it smaller.
that's what your mom said.
I believe that's a TVGA display. (Tiny VGA)
HA!
The packaging made it look huge, but the cartridge shots really put it into perspective. Nice DIY!
yeah at first i was like "holy f*ck that thing is enormous, like nearly a foot tall" then i realized it was probably less than 6 and just the screen is super small.
It's like a weird NES/SNES/PSX frankenstein. I would have preferred if he had used real SNES buttons and kept with the SNES's general appearance. Besides, the SNES has one of the best Dpads ever made, why replace it with that crappy looking round one?
and the L and R keys???? These replacement ones are junk!
I dont like it. The SNES controller was THE GREATEST CONTROLLER OF OUR TIME and if you're gonna do a proper thing like this, you use an snes controller.
It actually burns my eyes, engadget. just cause of the black buttons.
WOW! The screen's too small for me, but WOW!
Adding interchangeable faceplates would take this up another level.
I would love to have one of these.
isnt DSi able to play some snes games through the DSi ware stuff?
So what?
Yeah, and the PSP has a SNES emulator, and plenty of other moddable retail devices do the same, in a neater package. But that's not what making these things is all about. :)
well except an emulator will never produce the exact same sounds as the original games. Fire up an emulator and an old copy of super mario world and tell me if you hear the difference in the sounds it makes.
@Thomas
Uh huh, and why is that?
Looks awesome, still wouldn't buy one though.
This is where I'd usually insert some snark about using the Dingoo A320 instead, but unless you're running the Dingux SNES emulator, the A320's native SNES leaves a bit to be desired.
What's the actual size of this thing? Engadget, do you have dimensions? I don't happen to have any SNES cartridges lying around for scale.
Some people just have too much time...
some people just have hobbies...
.
ooops, I meant to say, some people just need a girlfriend (crappy Dell...)
Nintendo wouldn't be interested in this.
X: "Look, it brings back fun games from the past!"
Nintendo: "But can it check your pulse?"
X "Wha?"
Nintendo: "Do you need 100 accessories to play it?"
X: "Um..."
Nintendo: "Get the hell out of here"
Once again ThinkGeek and Chinese manufacturers are way ahead of you.

Or way behind, that's a NES, this is a SNES.
That screen is tiny.
That's what SHE said ^_^
Question, how does he make his own case, use a mold or something?
"Hey man, whats the cheat code for konami?, well you just press up, down, up down, then ...wait......what the f**k are these buttons? Where is A!!!??? No no no, you gotta press 'grouping of three dots' button!!! DAMNI!!!"
Where do I plug in my Mario Paint mouse?
Between the Power Glove and Power Pad, SLATER! :)
shouldn't the buttons be Y,X B,A instead of circle square etc..
Using PlayStation style buttons instead of XABY is blasphemous.
Thank you Captain Obvious.
My fav part of the translated page....
"Regarding food, SNESP V2 runs on batteries (2X 3 LR6) batteries placed in 2 compartments perfectly into the back of the beautiful."
