Qik for iPhone 3GS now available, still not capable of live 3G streaming
So, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that Qik for iPhone 3GS is now available, and it's completely gratis to download. The bad news is that it probably won't do exactly what you want it to. You see, those on Symbian S60 have grown used to a Qik that can actually stream live video to the internet, whereas this app is currently just a "capture and upload" piece. Moreover, it only works via WiFi, so if you're not near a hotspot once your video is done, you'll have to wait until you wander back over to one before it automatically begins uploading. Though, you can let the app automatically inform viewers of where the video was taken (in case you feel like pampering guests who show up unannounced), and you can also frame the video horizontally or vertically. The Qik team assures us that an update is in the works to add 3G uploading, but for now, it's WiFi or bust. Which is kosher so long as it's free... we guess.

Seriously weak with not just no Live Streaming, but no 3G on the go, what's the use? Might as well use the camera app with uploading to YouTube.
We can do 3g stream on old nokia phones since 1990 welcome to the party iphone users
@DR House: Were you even born in 1990? I remember phones then, I'm pretty sure they couldn't stream video... 11 years before 3G.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3g
"The first commercial launch of 3G was also by NTT DoCoMo in Japan on October 1, 2001"
DR House stop being a moron lol
anyway, i have QIK on my Nokia 5800, its actually amazing, it directly starts streaming onto the web with almost zero lag! I tried it using my wifi connection, worked like a charm! very useful for people who'd attend press conferenes or private events!
Too bad that it doesn't support the same features on the 3gS... Its a very promising app.
Yeeaahh... This is quite sad. iPhone slips yet again.
Android has had LIVE streaming since the Qik app became available!
For all it's "sexiness" I have yet to see why all the pandering to the iPhone. It's inferior in almost EVERY way with the exception of looking gorgeous.
Android has livestreaming too. Suckit iPhone.
I would love to have video conferencing.
Wait... no live streaming; isn't that the point of Qik?
Everyone says it's stupid to put a camera on the new iPod Touch. But everyone keeps thinking about still pictures... it's a VIDEO camera that will make the difference!
If the new iPod Touch has a video camera... kiss the Flip camera goodbye.
Even if you had to wait until you get to a WIFI hotspot to upload your videos... it will still be worth it.
Sure... it won't be 720p... but as long as it's 640x480 and can upload to Youtube and Facebook over WIFI... it's a game-changer.
Nobody will buy a Flip camera for $149 when you can get an iPod Touch with video, music, web browsing and WIFI for $229.
Come on Apple... give the iPod Touch a video camera!
Yeah just how nobody has point and shoot cameras because pretty much every cell phone out there has a camera already and there is no point in spending $200 since you already have one on your phone. Oh wait nobody wants to look at all the blurry photos and unwatchable video taken with cell phones on anything bigger than a 3 inch screen.
>> "Oh wait nobody wants to look at all the blurry photos and unwatchable video taken with cell phones on anything bigger than a 3 inch screen."
I think you're underestimating the video that comes out of these small cameras... especially the iPhone video camera.
The best camcorder is the one you have with you... which is why pocket camcorders are so popular today. Nobody is carrying a MiniDV camcorder all the time.
Did you not see the this earlier? Ask Engadget: Best pocket-sized camcorder out there? http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/13/ask-engadget-best-pocket-sized-camcorder-out-there/
Sure, Michael, it's a game changer... in 2007.
Did you even think about what you wrote?
@Mark Anderson >> "Sure, Michael, it's a game changer... in 2007. Did you even think about what you wrote?"
Oh, I see... you were talking about HD. Well... there are plenty of pocket camcorders that record in HD. But you have to carry an HDMI cable with you wherever you go. And hope that everywhere you go has an HDTV. Not all pocket camcorders have WIFI... so you have to get back to a computer to upload it. And if you do have a pocket camcorder with WIFI... that's all it does. You carry it in your pocket and it's only a camcorder.
The rumors suggest that the new iPod Touch will have a camera... and the iPhone 3GS already has a camcorder that can upload video to the internet. Having the ability to upload video over WIFI would be a bonus for the iPod Touch. That's the game-changer part I was hinting at... it's an iPod, *and* a pocket video camera.
The Flip Camera and all of the other pocket camcorders do what they are supposed to do... provide ease of use and convenience. You're not gonna shoot National Geographic quality video with a pocket camcorder... and you shouldn't expect that the letters "HD" stamped on a camera provide miracles.
So, yes... I would rather have an iPod Touch with a standard-definition video camera and the ability to edit and upload video over WIFI... than a separate Flip MinoHD that I had to plug into a computer.
The original Flip Camera had no HD and no WIFI... and it sold pretty well.
Michael, it would actually be pointless. Devices can already upload video seamlessly and having to find a WiFi spot to upload video from a Touch is just silly when you consider there are devices that can do this better over 3G already.
Even if people do own a Touch the odds are that they also have a smartphone that does the job better. I'm sure that the next touch will have a camera and video but what do you use - the device that needs WiFi or the one that can use 3G and which probably has a better camera to boot?
i actually agree with Michael. I have a Flip, and I haven't touched it since I got my 3GS. The iPhone video is actually a little better clarity (at lower resolution) than my Flip Mino HD was. Too many pixels sometimes make a marginal video (i.e. lots of movement or dimly lit situations) look worse. And my 3GS sends video wherever I need it without ever plugging it in to a computer.
And who's to say that the new iPod touch will have the same camera? The touches have been getting quiet hardware bumps over the iPhone since the beginning. They have a faster processor than the 3G, stronger bluetooth radios, and more memory. Perhaps Apple will release a touch with a processor like the 3GS, and include a 720p camera and a 64GB drive.
With a $99 3G and a $200 3GS, they have to set the touch hardware apart. A better camera, faster processor, and more memory would be a start. Maybe OLED?
Yeah I agree man, people don't care enough about whether or not it shoots in 720p, they just want to shoot and upload that content to youtube to show their friends. I'm really hoping that Flip has something in the works though because I really love that company and I believe they're the ones who really knew what this pocket camcorder business was all about. Hopefully with the Cisco acquisition, they'll be able to figure out how to stream live or something, that would be pretty interesting.
@ Mark Anderson >> "Michael, it would actually be pointless. Devices can already upload video seamlessly and having to find a WiFi spot to upload video from a Touch is just silly when you consider there are devices that can do this better over 3G already.
How is it pointless? There are many pocket camcorders that you have to plug into a computer. The Flip camcorder has a USB plug that pops out of the device. Others use USB cables! And how hard is it to find WIFI? I think you'd find more WIFI hotspots than the one place your computer is. If you shoot a bunch of video with a Flip Camera, and have to go to your computer, plug it in, and open up the FlipShare software... wouldn't it just be easier to walk into WIFI zone and send the videos to YouTube directly from the device over WIFI?
>> "Even if people do own a Touch the odds are that they also have a smartphone that does the job better. I'm sure that the next touch will have a camera and video but what do you use - the device that needs WiFi or the one that can use 3G and which probably has a better camera to boot?"
Yes, smartphones can shoot video and upload it. But I have yet to see a smartphone that shoots 640x480 30fps that looks as good as a pocket camcorder. And would you like to upload that over 3G? How many people use a Flip Camera and a computer to upload, versus a smartphone and 3G? My Blackberry Curve shoots video at 240x176, and it looks like crap. The newest Blackberry Tour shoots 480x352, but how many of those do people have? You've seen the video quality of the iPhone 3Gs on Youtube... its great considering it's a phone and a camcorder.
If *everybody* has a smartphone with 3G, then why have millions and millions of Flip Cameras been sold over the last couple of years?
The world grows tired of an American Telco determining what we can do with devices on our fully functional mobile networks.
You mean "Americans grow tired of an American Telco determining what we can do with devices on our fully functional mobile networks."...
The world doesn't care, because many of the world's telcos don't lock phones to their networks nor make non-competitive deals with phone makers to screw their customers. Yeah, we pretty much do whatever we want with our phones. It's funny how an advanced country like the US have an incredibly backward telecoms industry.
And yet we're leading the world in software & platforms for mobile devices...hm. Symbian? Yeah, no thanks.
3GRestrictor anyone? You gotta love jailbreaking :-)
Solve your wifi problem
it won't solve anything if you use the lamo AppStore Qik (i.e., the neutered version).
if you are already using unrestrictor means you are jailbroken. just get the Qik from Cydia with all of its cojones intact.
btw, why are people NOT jailbreaking. just boggles my mind. I guess everyone likes being told what to do by big evil corporations.
haha yea true that.
My BlackBerry bold has been able to do live streaming with Qik for quite some time now.
Maybe it's time for a new phone?
Good thing Cydia's Qik app suports live streaming on jailbroken iphones... Its pretty cool, but i wouldnt Call it live streaming... On AT&T, there's always a delay.
seriously people! this should be a non issue, jailbreak your goddamn phone already, it takes 15 minutes and, as stated above, the qik for iphone app streams video over 3g directly to the qik site. obviously with a small delay, but regardless, everyone needs to stop complaining when there's such an easy solution.
And people say that Engadget isn't full of Apple fanboys. The G1 has had Qik for a while now and it offers 3g streaming but there wasn't a single post about it on this website. How typical.
Squeaky wheel gets the grease, kids.
I agree that engadget is a little Apple-heavy at times, but there's a reason for that.
It's not news when an open platform (like Android) gets a new App. It's like saying "A blue car just went down the highway." People make apps, and then they can be put on the phone.
Apple Apps like this are news because people have to bitch and moan and jump through hoops to get Apple to approve anything innovative and cool. We can have 1500 tip calculators, but no streaming video now. That's why it's news. It's news because companies are actually changing their business models to get on the iPhone. Ustream doesn't STREAM. Qik is now barely better than the built in camera. It just adds twitter and Facebook to the list of upload spots. Some people will like it, but I'm jailbreaking my 3GS ASAP.
Works great on Android!!
Will ATT let iphone users upload via 3g even?
Guess no app for that:(
Don't you get it! your supposed to pay $30.00 a month for the data plan so you can never use it! Make sense now?
This has been on the G1 for a while, and even allows 3g streaming.
I've used the Qik website and have been way underwhelmed. The live videos are all choppy, the content is pathetic, and it really just makes the viewer ache for something that works. So, with that being said, I don't see not being able to live stream as a deal breaker. I'll do anything to get rid of that 'by VideoUp' tag that currently appears with my videos. Qik is a cooler brand.
What are the uses of live streaming anyway? Or even direct uploading from your phone?
You can simply upload stuff to youtube after you get home, who cares about a couple hours of difference? Like people are in a hurry queuing up to see your incredible videos :D
You're completely missing the point.
You pay for a 3G "broadband" connection that has about 3,000 limitations.
Not being able to stream, maybe i can understand. Not being able to upload whatsoever.... well that's absolutely unacceptable.
yeah, i agree with that, if the carrier charges you for unlimited data they should be honest about it.
if they don't really mean unlimited data they should change it to 1 GB par month and let people use it for whatever they want, even tethering, but that's another story
Evidently all the publicity overwhelmed the qik servers? The engadget effect...

Windows Mobile also has 3G streaming, I used it two days ago when I went and played with the new HTC Touch Pro 2 at a Tmobile store.

I've been doing this on my jailbreak 3g for ever. Really apple? I phone that wasn't even to be able to do video can out do the video camera?
Not to change the subject, but are you sure that "gratis" can be used as a noun? I thought it was only an adjective or adverb.
D
lol iPhone.
