Vision Research rolls out high-speed Phantom Miro eX-series cameras

In the market for a high-speed camera that's compact but definitely won't be mistaken for a regular point-and-shoot? Then you may want to look no farther than one of Vision Research's new Phantom Miro eX-series cameras, which boast a "DSLR-like" design and a spec list intended for high-speed video and not much else. That includes your choice of 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 resolution cams, video frame rates from 500 fps to "over" 100,000 fps (at a reduced resolution), ISO settings up to ISO 1200 for color or ISO 4800 for monochrome, a 3.5-inch touchscreen, and 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB of internal memory, plus a CompactFlash card slot for expansion. Of course, these also won't be mistaken for a point-and-shoot when it comes to price, with the base eX1 model starting at just under ten grand.

cool! This would be cool for filming matrix-like scenes!
No not really. High speed can be used for slow motion, but that's ridiculously slow. Not to mention The Matrix is best know for its use of bullet time sequences which utilize a single frame from multiple cameras all shot at once and spaced apart accordingly.
This is more useful for scientific applications.
Plus, I don't know anyone who can dodge bullets.
I can.
I spy with my fleshy human eye - Zeiss!
Yep, that's a Zeiss F-mount lens alright.

watching that show once is bad enough. i think i'll pass on any new version. another thought.... does anyone know what makes high speed cameras (of a decent quality) so incredibly expensive? do they have actual shutters? is the memory buffer for large amounts of data the issue?
choice of 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 resolution cams... 10 grand?
George Lucas aspirations for youtube!
I've been spectacularly unimpressed with the image quality of previous Phantom cameras.
then you've obviously never used or seen footage from a Phantom 65 or HD Gold...
Compared to what (from digital source)?
Sit through a transfer session of 400fps Photosonics takes and you'll see why Phantom is the future.
Woooowwwww thhhhaaaat wwaaaaaatttteeerrrr isssss reeaaalllllly pretttttttyyyyyyy.......
TIMEWARP!
psh... 100k... beat 2 million fps and i'll be impressed...
I'm currently using a camera with the ability to go up to 200 million fps.

My camera's frame rate is so high that you can track individual photons as they cross the room and bounce off shiny surfaces.
1992 called and they said they want their 640x480 resolution back. On hold I have 1995 too...
There's something very "Minox" cool about this thing...
Awesome! Where can I get one?
"The Phantom Miro eX1 model is priced less than $10,000 and is available for online ordering only at www.visionresearch.com/store."
Hmm. Where can I get $10,000?
Do you have both of your kidneys? If so, I think I may be able to help.
OVER 9000 fps? Want.
Resolution's just too low. Ergonomic advantages over their lunchbox models don't matter, the camera is going to be locked down or on moco rig for shooting plates.
Although I wonder what handheld looks like at 1000fps....
What's that? Some virus link for un-patched windows?
Cool, but could you guys put the price tag at the beginning of the article next time? That way, as soon as I see the words "ten grand" I can skip the article entirely.
