Zune HD's HD Radio breaks through the FCC as well
Can you feel it? The Zune HD is really really real, and the FCC just rubber stamped another internal component: the onboard HD Radio. With a September 15th release date already on the books, it's not exactly a surprise that the wireless insides of the device won't fry your babies, but it's still a comforting thought. And check out that sexy label! Totally worth the second trip to FCC land.

yay?
more like meh. my mobile has radio, so what?
so does my dads torch
It may have radio but I doubt its HD radio.
moron...
Get a Wii? Wow you really do phail hard.
I'm sorry but I can't read the first two comments here. They are too faded to read them. Can someone help me out here?
Who cares about HD radio in this age of Internet radio!
Seriously, HD Radio is not a feature to win people from other multimedia players.
Eddy,
Couldn't agree more! Superior web browser, games and third party apps are the key for modern media player, not the stinky radio.
I bought my Dad an iPod Touch last Xmas. He was thrilled, and his first question was how to tune in the local radio.
Godammit.
With 4% market share, Zune has died long ago. This won't change anything!
beats apple's logo thats for sure
@iJames White
If you were to suddenly catch on fire right now, it would be doing the world the favor. Idiots like you shouldn't be allowed to reproduce.
@ijameswhite
you sure get alot from a logo.
@iJames White
you're a douche.
The Apple symbolizes temptation, the Circle of Friends symbolizes teamwork, the Windows logo symbolizes.. some.. Windows.. and the Zune symbol symbolizes, like.. a Z.
I'll grant that it /is/ a cool looking Z..
@iJames White
Hey, wow, look how you spelled Microsoft with a dollar sign. Dang, that's clever. Never seen that before, I wonder if that'll catch on.
(is my sarcastic tone coming through sufficiently?)
Damn James. Your proved you're a fanboy, idiot and a douche all in a few minutes. Good job.
I like the "Micro$oft's", when in reality apple is an absolute rip off.
@ethana2
I agree, the Zune isn't all that tempting. ;)
But seriously, it is extremely lacking in features (no bluetooth, low screen res, no speaker, little external media integration), power (they could make the current iPhone processor actually be faster than the Tegra if they wanted *gasp*), and software (not that the os isn't nice, but 3rd party apps seem to be a low priority at the moment) when compared to the iPod touch, which has been gobbling up features as they are added to the Jesus Phone by the overpaying iSuckers on contracts.
Seriously, the R&D for the touch must be next to nothing since almost everything can come completely from the iPhone sector, and God knows they are making a killing on that device right now. If Apple announces a new touch this fall with a microphone, 3.0 MP camera, HD radio, 1080p video out, OLED screen, better audio quality, and all the features it already has that the Zune can't match, all for $299 (32GB), I would not be the least bit surprised. At least hold off until you see what the competition is everyone! Audiophiles might not be stuck with this polygonal (albeit durable and sexy) Microsoft product after all.
@ iJames White
Hello paul a. chapel
@ethana2
haha, i actually view it the complete opposite way. the one bite of the apple signifies TO ME and reminds ME of the story of Adam and Eve and how they gave into temptation and took a bite of the forbidden fruit that was nothing better than all the other fruit, but it was a tests, and since they gave in, they failed and were instantly seen as people who are week and give in to almost any little thing... see the awfully close comparison in stories there?? thus, i think that Apple choose the PERFECT logo for themselves haha ;)
and NO! i do not hate Apple, nor am i a Microsoft fanboy!! to prove it, i'll say that Microsoft is completely lacking a logo for themselves,they just have their boring name in text with, so ha! plus i'm running on a mac while currently (and usually) using windows ;)
"Go eat at McDonalds for quality food."
Made me laugh. I'm sorry.
I love how I get downranked by the multitudes of PC users out there whoring themselves to Microsoft, yet none of you have the balls nor the intelligence to refute my reasoning for why the Zune HD is an over-hyped, underpowered device when compared with the Apple iPod touch. You absolute pussies.
I wish my phone had an FM receiver.
My previous phone did. I never used it, since it required you have earbuds plugged in (to act as an antenna). I never had earbuds plugged in since I use a Bluetooth headset.
Like the iPh....oh...wait...
Any chance of DAB in the UK?
Check out the TV interface guys. It's awesome

Looks the same as the on-screen UI. Awesome seems kinda exaggerated to me, but it's nice.
Can't wait for a HDMI remote for my Nikon dSLR fashioned out of ZuneHD and a cable!
Where do you see info that Zune HD accepts video in?
zune hd
itablet
zune hd
itablet
zunehd
...
Hurry up and photoshop something that looks remotely like it could be a ipad and submit it! If you are lucky you might make it on the front page by this evening.
@ijames
There are already plenty of tablets out there running windows - mine is just over a year old and it's fantastic. Oh wait, that just completely ruins your whole "MS copies everything 2 years behind" argument doesn't it? Oh well.
I put an iPad between my legs on the 8th of each month.
@ijames
Actually plenty have been very good - mine is almost perfect (only needing more battery life - 5 hours is a little short for me). Plus why would Microsoft go into making computers when they make software for computers? Yes the zune is made by microsoft - but it's an PMP which is a market Microsoft had never entered before.
I am amazed at someone who has no knowledge what so ever of the very concept of what a company is and how it works. But apparently Mr iJames White has no idea how a company works.
Here is a little lesson. Some try and SURVIVE by coming up with new ideas, or refining old concepts. While others who have HUGE market shares and have ten times more money and resources are not too worried about innovating.
Do not hate the player, hate the game.
@ iJames White
Hey, wow, you're still spelling Microsoft with a dollar sign. Dude, you are so cool. Way to stick to your guns.
More like CrApple!
Did engadget's level of stupid go up suddenly or is it just me?
You guys are all sad.
I was just referring to the non-stop posts on engadget the past few days, about the zune hd and the itablet rumors.
Do we need a post about every itablet mock-up?
Do we need a post about the zune hd's freaking radio breaking through the FCC?
Really?
Engadget does it for the flame wars at the comments section and the subsequent clicks/ads.
What do you come here for? Look at the state of comments on Engadget:
First!
Microsoft FTW
Zune HD sucks
Ipod is awesome
Micro$oft copies Apple!
Then for every one of these kind of posts, there will be ten people saying the opposite thing, or insulting the guys trolling as if they are any better.
Over and out.
In case you guys are referring to me, then (just in case you couldn't see the drips of sarcasm raining from my posts) know that I was simply quoting the guy and poking a little fun at him.
Bah, forget it.
I don't understand why all these people nowadays are saying that MS is copying Apple, but didn't apple copy the whole computer OS after all ?
Apple had an OS bundled with their machines long before windows was even a thought.
yeah... uhm... apple got that idea from Xerox. kthx, try again.
(and yes, even IF they bought the rights or whatnot, they still didn't INVENT THE IDEA.)
Does anyone know if you need proprietary headphones to use the radio or will any headphones do?
I think that you have to you special ones with radio antenna's in it.
with most phone's any headphone's will do, the wiring in them just allows the antenna in the phone to pick up the signal a bit better, like an external aerial
therefore the zune will probably be the same - NEED AN EDIT COMMENT BUTTON
NEED AN EDIT COMMENT BUTTON, VERY YES
