Acer Timeline 1810T gets renamed and reviewed ahead of imminent US release
With a 1.4GHz Intel SU3500 chip, up to 4GB of memory and a 1366 x 768 display, Acer's 11.6-inch Timeline 1810T threatens to bridge the usability gap between netbooks and workhorse laptops. And now that the first review has come in, we can say that the verdict is... well, ambivalent. Multitasking, battery life and general build quality scored the thumbs up, but the glossy screen and casing weren't so well received, and 1080p and Flash video playback were hit-and-miss. Set to be known as the Aspire 1410 in the US, this grown-up netbook is expected to arrive pretty soon, with some online retailers already offering pre-orders at $450. The video review is after the break, or hit the read link to check out the unboxing and more extensive thoughts on the laptop.

Thank goodness for a youtube link that doesn't contain a graphic depiction of dieing: babies, parents and teenage girls!
as to the acer, it looks to be amazing for it's price bracket and form factor. If you put windows seven on it it should get even better battery life! The laptop looks to be a really good option for those looking at the netbook form factor. Good job Acer!
I personally don't like Acer very much...
You know google, if you're really nice, I might put your upcoming OS on my Acer. (just kidding, I don't have an acer)
-3 Internets for vista. That's sooooo last month.
You think the sheer number of times people epically fail their first attempt everyone would of just given up by now.
Why even try?
@AC
I am a fan of your satirical posting style. So many engadgeteers view themselves as intellectual experts. Every post you make shows how thick and angry commenters can be. Keep it up! There are some of us that see things your way.
oh yeah, I almost forgot: /sarcasm(?)
Hahahaha, sucker
Netbook = Cheapbook = Cheapparts = Cheapexperience = Cheapreturn!!! ;)
I like the netbook concept. I don't want to pay full price for a secondary computer I will rarely use.
However, if you use a netbook on the daily...your best off with a laptop.
There are different versions of this branded for different countries. A 1410 in one country could be an 1810 in another. In the US we will get:
Non Timeline model:
1410T- This version (SU3500, 2GB ram, 250HDD, 6 hour battery life)
These are Timeline models (longer battery life):
1810T- close specs to 1410T but longer battery life (8 hours)
1810TZ- Pentium Dual Core SU4100, higher specs, 8 hours of battery life
Where did you hear that information?
Hay guyz, don't forget, SU4100 Core2Duo version 1410Tz coming out later.

4 gigs of memory and 1.6 ghz? Is someone trying to run 10 copies of Starcraft 1?
Hey, I am a hard-core gamer no matter what you say!
UP TO 4gbs of memory
Well, it is running Vista.
Running Vista is a good thing - it qualifies for a free Windows 7 upgrade from Acer.
Not if it comes equipped with Vista Basic.
Ah, a comment ranking system that actually works.
Hopefully the bring out a model with the ATI 4330 gpu like the larger models. If that pair that with the dual core cpu I may have to get one for my pop.s
Sweet CPU, but horrible rest. No, if only they included a CHIPSET like the Nvidia Ion, rather than an Intel Cr@*set.
Can't even play youtube high def..
The price and size though seem pretty awesome, really making you ask what's the point of an Asus EEE 1000, or any of these 10" Netbooks we have 3Gzillion iterations of. I mean I LOVE my Asus 1000H despite all it's flaws, but this body make it look so yesterday. Now that Intel SSDs finally become cheap, *Sweet dreams*.

You can't play Youtube HD with ION either. Flash isn't GPU-acclerated (thanks Adobe). It will actually play worse on an ION netbook because an Atom N270/280 is much slower than a Core 2 Solo.
Well, I am NOT suggesting to couple the ION with the Atom. Agreed, that's no good either.
The Ion actually supports pretty much ANY FSB based semi recent INTEL CPU, including Pentium 4 and Core 2 Duo.
So keep the Intel SU3500, just ditch the Intel Chipset.
The CPU is great...

@schrutefan
Flash is not GPU accelerated *yet*. Adobe is working with NVidia to change that.
This is your last warning Acer. Release a Timeline notebook with the ATI HD4330 graphics for North America or I'm not biting. Seriously, that notebook would be ideal for anyone looking for battery life, graphical powerful, windows and a reasonable price.
I can get the first two with a Macbook Pro, but the last two are a little bit of a stretch.
You have two more weeks Acer, don't let me down.
Thanks to Intel this isn't possible. Intel's low powered Core 2 Solo and Core 2 Duo processors must be purchased with the Mobile GS45 Express chipset. It's a bummer because the SU9400 and a HD4330 would make a great combination. This is Intel's new way of pushing their terrible graphics solution.
GCK: Sure it's possible. Google 3810TG...
That laptop also costs $1200 USD. I don't think it qualifies to be anything CLOSE to a netbook, since price is usually the main factor people look at.
You know, there is a plethora of mediocrity in laptops out there. You'd think there would be a higher ratio of good laptops since a new one comes out more often than Twitter goes down.
I actually like Acer, but with good laptops out there as reference, I think the Sony guy was right when he said it was a "race to the bottom."
holy fuck! 30 secs for vista?
I'm glad to see more and more of these types of notebook appear in the market. The processor is low-powered, but you trade off speed for longevity and battery life, which is quite useful for those on-the-go. Large hard drive and RAM capacities are also a plus. I know Acer is trying to keep costs down to a minimum, but trading up to something like an Ion chipset wouldn't hurt. Intel's integrated graphics do not appeal to me one bit. But, this one is to be smaller than the rest of the lineup. At $450, you're really getting into netbook territory, and this thing is far more powerful than any Atom-based machine out there. I'm liking the looks of this. Lower the price to $399 and it'll sell like hotcakes. If I needed an ultraportable, I would consider this first and foremost now. Plus the Dell Mini 12 is gone... Hey Acer, I'm talking to you here, let me try one out so I can give you an honest consumer opinion.

Funny when people complain how underpowered a netbook is. What the hell do you use your machines for?? I have the crappiest z520 with 2gb RAM and windows 7 runs and loads really fast. The only thing that lags is youtube when it's on power saving mode. Can't play games or use photoshop, but I got a real laptop for that, even though I'd rather trade it for a desktop right now.
If something isn't hardware accelerated, it's sucking up more CPU cycles, thus battery life suffers. Plus YouTube looks so damn choppy!
Played around with one of the Timeline (1.3 GHz) at Fry's yesterday. It's slow. Took a good 15 seconds to open Windows Photo Gallery, and 1-2 seconds using gestures to zoom in and out of the picture. Too slow to be useful.
I think the HP dv-2 feels faster, at least when I was playing with it at CES.
This is a different processor. It's supposed to be much snappier than the Atom netbooks so...
Waiting patiently for the 1810TZ + Win7:
