Wales produces exceptionally graphic, educational film about the dangers of texting while driving
Alright, texting while driving? Obviously stupid -- but that doesn't stop tons and tons of people from doing it. The Gwent Police department in Wales hopes that its newest PSA film will help deter this bad behavior. In much the same spirit as the drunk driving on prom night films we ourselves had to sit thorough in high school, this film is pretty graphic. Okay, it's actually shockingly graphic -- but we're pretty sure that's the idea. Video is after the break.

Posting from my phone while driving!
Damn it!
Personally, I find driving to be distracting while texting.
Why don't cell phone makers design speech to text system? Also why not just talk on the phone using Bluetooth headsets instead of typing?
That girl needs to brush up her skill on texting while driving before risking hers and others' lives. It needs lots of practice and special training.
I shoot videos and talk simultaneously using my smartphone while driving all the time especially during road rages against gangsta. Yeah, I'm talking about chasing criminal vehicles! You just need to have skills.
I never understood the whole "Speech to text" system for text messaging. Why not just call the person?

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having a phone? Why not just call the person instead of texting them. It's almost like people have forgotten cell phones can make calls.
They were driving on the wrong side of the road for starters... *wink*
Sorry to post jack, but here's a "sequel" of it.

I don't text, so I'm not effected by this!
Posting this from my phone while driving and putting on my makeup.
If this was a Top Gear episode you'd hear Jeremy Clarkson doing a voiceover:
"Oh and you can see her coming around into the wrong lane, ooh, look at that! Gives new meaning to the term 'hammerhead". Talk about oversteer. This is why Hammond's kids won't be allowed to drive until they are 30. And sadly, these children you see here, all died.... Anyway, the new Ferrari 458 Italia...."
Engadget's comment system makes it too easy to be 'highest ranked' or 'lowest ranked'. Admittedly, most of the comments here that are highly ranked are either relevant, smart, hilarious, or all three, but somehow it just means less to be highly ranked when about 20 other comments are too.
As for the actual PSA, maybe I've been exposed to too much, or maybe it is painfully similar to the high school skits, or maybe it's because I read all your comments before actually watching it, but nonetheless, it made me laugh. : /
I used to think/say the same thing about texting... that there is minimal point to it when you can always call... but if you are just confirming something, or giving an update on how much longer you will be etc, it makes sense to text instead of having a phone call just to say 'on bus, 5 minutes away, see you soon' or something like that.
Other things to consider are the associated costs... perhaps for long distance, but within country, it is cheaper to text simple messages than call them etc. etc.
Mind you, the main reason I use texts is because I don't like talking on the phone that much when I have something succinct to convey... and I am often in an environment where talking on the phone is obnoxious (like in a lecture etc)
Remember, no matter how bad this looks, Richard Hammond had it worse.
@Aguiluz
I can't take the old woman seriously since I've heard her say "Just kiss him good night or maybe give him a cheeky finger".
Carpool or CarPWNED!
If they have used blackberry they wouldn't have died, you can see from first second in the video that they are using Sony Ericsson phone which is not built for messaging + driving unlike the blackberry
If you wanna Text+Drive get a blackberry
@r3loaded
"Remember, no matter how bad this looks, Richard Hammond had it worse."
Yeah and look at Hammond now - he's Mr Mullet. His accident caused him to be trapped in the year 1985.
Totally Awesome!
I love the British way to do many things. They don't hold any punches - they don't make excuses.
If this were an American production - they'd have cut the footage right before the collision and then some announcer would have come on talking about the consequences instead - leaving the viewer to infer the carnage.
Awesome!
COW taster 001 lol
This video could have just as easily been about the dangers of teen girls driving cars.
Needs moar gore. Kids these days are used to this shit, anyway.
I HAVE A RIGHT TO TEXT WHILE DRIVING.
Get the Government out of our cars....
and i have the right to call you an idiot for doing so
@Quantumphysics
Get your car off the government paid roads.
The government is not only trying to make it safe out there for everyone, they also don't like the extra expense of having to go out there to save your ass. Police, fire fighters, ect. are paid by taxes
What a waste of hot snatch...
It will still be hot snatch for a while. Then it will be warm snatch. Shortly after it will be tepid snatch. Then after a couple hours it'll be cold snatch.
that would be my ex girlfriend's hot snatch..
Wow....
Britain makes the best public service videos.

Best PSA EVER!
All others pale in stupidity and odd effectiveness.
Well, Fifth Gear crashed a Renault Modus against a big, fat, old Volvo estate. Those in the Volvo with all it's Swedish steel wouldn't have stood a chance, those in the Renault would have easily survived. Big, fat, old cars don't stand a chance against a modern European or Japanese car.

That was really sad. Video was well done. I'll admit, I text while I drive sometimes. Mainly at red lights though. Sometimes down just a back road and pause if I see a car outta my peripherals, but thats very rarely. I definitely need to stop and will so from now on.
I don't know if this is normal... but I laughed at the video.
i wodner what's actually rare. you seeing the car, or the car being there.
I didn't think the entire video was that funny, but when the kid wanted to know why his parents wouldn't wake up, I almost shot soda out my nose.
The acting is funny because it is cliche. I don't think anyone is saying that the subject matter is funny. I for one can appreciate a morbid sense of humor, and those actors were kind of bad. I also laughed to myself at the 3-4 helicopters in the air above the scene. Did they really need to call in that many choppers?
thats why you dont drive a bitch car and get in a hummer or a dodge hemi instead ;D
Yeah, so that you can kill more innocent. God are people egoistic (and stupid...).
The solution is to not star as the attractive-yet-typical-looking teen driver in a safety PSA. Then you will be safe.
I'd rather be on the road with a drunk. At least they are usually trying hard not to get busted.
Still really stupid though, of course.
Anyone know if they made a video like this to teach the dangers of road head?
I never thought I could laugh so much reading Engadget comments.
People like ispartan89 should be promoted to the rank of humorist for all this life experience and be paid to write crap like this. It would help them get out of Hicktown anyway.
Posting this while dri
I see what you did there.
What did he
Well he was texting while driving (like I am right now) and his comment got cut off which means he got into and acc
