Xbox 360 'only console to show growth this year' according to Microsoft
Dubbing itself "the industry's sole bright spot in 2009," Microsoft has spun some depressing console sale decline numbers from NPD into a self-congratulating piece on the Xbox 360's singular success this year. Through the first seven months of 2009 the console has shown 17 percent growth, despite July's losses for the Big Three's respective slabs of home hardware. Microsoft also points out that the 360 has been the number one platform for third-party sales through the entire year. Of course, this is nothing Sony can't rectify with a bit of dirt cheap PS3 Slim magic, right? Right? Nintendo meanwhile probably can't hear Microsoft's bragging through the thick, cash-lined vaults it's built for itself off the back of ceaseless peripheral sales.

what it all comes down to is
Sony is a great hardware developer.
Microsoft is a great software developer.
nothing makes me pissed of more then sony releasing info on a game thats not coming for years and keep feeding it to use.
most good ps3 games i just don't care about when they come out because i am sick of the trailers then 2 years later the game comes out. (bad marketing)
I own both xbox 360 and ps3
i prefer the xbox, ps3 is great but both company's need to learn work more on what they suck at Microsoft hardware and sony software.
this is just me and i recommend the xbox over the ps3, just keep in mind this is new for both companies.
I think people are arguing the true measure of success for the 360 so far. And probably the primary reason Microsoft entered the video game console market in the first place. MS wanted to be the Internet media device that is connected to the world's TVs. They saw a game console at the best vehicle to get there. The fight obviously isn't over but MS is certainly winning on that front.
X-box probably best for kids that are old enough to need a shave, have or need a job etc.. but for children Wii can't be beat
I dont think price should even be an issue in this discussion....cause everyone knows how much each console cost by now...the fact is have had a way more fun using my 360 that has broken down twice than using my ps3 that is a mint condition paper weight...whats the point of the ps3 if the experience is horrible...i mean really stand back and look at the network the ps3 has...you cant possible say this its good even if its free...free crap is still crap..
+1... i don't see how the ps3 is superior besides blu ray which most people don't have a need for. The games have almost identical graphics, esp on multiplatform games which are 90% of the games out anymore. The ps3 has a few title exclusive games (killzone, god of war, GT5) which can take advantage of the small difference in better graphics over the 360, all of which get outsold by 360 exclusives like halo, gears of war, and forza is almost identical to gt5. Most of the ps3 exclusives have jumped to multiplatform like metal gear, final fantasy, prototype, all of which make owning a ps3 over a 360 a non issue.
For almost all scenarios, the gaming platforms are identical, and anyone that thinks the psn is far superior to xbox live needs to check out xbox live again, its quite good (the $50 a year is negligible in my book, esp considering you aren't paying for a multi-year subscription all at once). Wireless is also a non issue, directly connecting is far more reliable and you can run an ethernet cable between ur xbox and any computer and connect that way for free, so wireless is a non issue also.
I said it once, I'll say it again. Sony needs to drop the price of the PS3 to $299 and charge $50/yr for PSN on those models only.
That would epically fail.
Why are people saying that their sales have increased right after the warranty thing has run out. Are you trying to suggest that they are counting console replacements as sales? If so, you're stupid.
I only choose to play the console that all my friends have and in my area a lot of people have Xbox 360's and i'm glad i made the switch because the online service is vastly superior and i'd definitely pay again just for the party system that they offer. In terms of games i think they're both equal with great exclusives for both console but the majority of games i want to play are multi-plat.
Tbh, i think the Xbox 360 edges the PS3 but not by much.
Nintendo can't hear anyone... including its fan base.
According to Microsoft *rolleyes*
This product is a piece of junk. From inception, its failure rate was as high as 68 percent to finally an unacceptable 16% in 2008. For all intents and purposes, this product should have been killed off the market by having such a high failure rate for years. A company would have long ago stopped producing this money losing piece of junk. Yet Microsoft with its knack of funding junk with its cash cows continue on with this junk of a hardware device as it continues to gain grown against companies who can not afford to lose billions on junk products. Despite their propaganda, the growth factor was probably fudged to add multiple shipments of the repaired or replacement devices to their products ship/sold numbers.
Then go buy an Apple Pippen...
Your comment only proves my point of not understanding the reason why this monopoly funded product should not exist. Thanks.
Like he said- the Apple Pippin.
Failure rates were never "68%" they've been speculated to be as high, but the most reliable sources show around 20% on average, and that number is shrinking. The first Xbox had the lowest failure rate of it's generation- lower than the PS2 and neck and neck with the GC. The 360's problems are a fluke, mainly to do with the mainboard manufacturer, Foxconn, and their half assed workmanship. But then again, the console has not only sold MORE than it's main competitor, the PS3, but it also has a higher attach rate than both the Wii and the PS3.
Something that you and other "Microsoft haters" seem to ignore, when it comes down to the Xbox, is that Microsoft really pushed online play for video game consoles. While it wasn't the first to have online play (Dreamcast) it was the first to get mainstream attention and was successful. Anyone who enjoys online play with their PS3 or Wii should be thankful for that.
However, you don't have any game consoles, you've never played an Xbox or Xbox 360, and your beloved Apple failed with it's attempt at a video game console. If you want to call any game console junk, look up what WindowsFTW posted.
BTW, Foxconn makes makes most of the circuit boards for Apple computers and the iPhone- could explain the iPhone's problems.
Oh poor Mr. Clicky forgot about facts from his last embarrassing discussion about the XBox massive failure rate.
FACTS!
An Acceptable failure rate is 3% within the industry. Xbox is 30% - 35%!!!!
In fact 68 of 100 unites out the door FAILED!
Even when resolved with the next revision it was still around 16% failure rate! Far above the acceptable 3% FAILURE rate! LOL
Remember!
Thats 68 out of 100 Xbox right out of the assembly line and shipped.

Apparently you don't read too well.
FACTS:
That "68 out of 100" bullshit is a CLAIM by ONE source.
"A second source cited that, at one time, there was just a 32% yield of one of the test production runs. 68 of every 100 test units were found to be defective."
That's one claim from what undisclosed source. Congrats.
In other news, the Apple iPhone suffers from a 91% failure rate. See what I did? Just as credible.
And what happened? You claimed 68%, now you're claiming 30-35%? You don't even have your story straight, let alone the facts which you're trying to shoot off.
More facts:
Xbox 360 is outselling it's main competitor. The Xbox 360 has a higher attach rate than it's main competitor AND the Wii. The Xbox 360 has more highly rated exclusives than it's main competitor. The Xbox 360 has higher satisfaction with it's online service than it's main competitor AND the Wii. The only downfall to the console was it's fragility in the beginning... However, I've never suffered an RRoD or failure of any kind despite having a 20GB Pro launch console and a 60GB Pro console.
Another fact:
Jubei is a know-nothing.
@Mr Clickerson, who used to be Zues God, but no more how sad. = FAIL!!!
Fact! Mr. Clicky has no Wiki to back up his numbers! ahaha.... FAIL!
Fact:
A little research proves otherwise, Jubei. You're the one who's so eager to search up the failure rate, so why don't do a quick search of the attach rates, sales, and such? Because you know you're wrong, and you look like a fool.
Curious, myself included, I wonder how many other people have been forced to purchase multiple machines because their old ones broke and the warranty expired almost exactly after the NXE was released and the Red Rings changed to E74?
this is for DR House (1st reply)
"GT sale twice as much ass halo if you check sales history"... look at this clown comparing a ps2 game with a install base of 150 million against a 360 game with a install base of 30 million. how about this numnutz... halo 3 has just hit the 10 million sold milestone... i can bet you for your engadget account granma turismo (yes i said 'granma', the series is old and has been overtaken by forza) will not outsell halo 3... ever. hell, i dont even think it will outsell forza 3 (which is coming out this year by the way, not in 2015 like granma turismo 5)
a lot of people dont need wireless.. why make everone pay for it?
hardrive prices are coming down already
you pay for a better online experience.. ask any xbox gamer and they will tell u that they are happy to pay the yearly fee
why do i want to pay more for bluray playback, do i really want it? if i really wanted one i would buy a seperate dedicated player
a controller without AA batteries? at least my controllers will last forever numnutz... guess what happens when your built in ps3 battery dies out? yup - in the trash the controller goes and buy another one ho! p.s enelope rechargeable batteries rock my world
but once natal drops... kiss the ps3 goodbye and the wii will have to have a MASSIVE pricedrop (this shouldnt be hard as its only a gamecube with a different controller, nintendo should be clever and drop their price asap, but they too greedy)
this may hurt some peoples feelings but the new 360 models are actually more reliable that the ps3's
i personally know od 2 ps3 owners who have had the same faults (discdrive doesnt read anything)... one of them got it repaired as they were still under 1 years manufacturing warranty and needed to show his reciept as proof, the other person had his reciept but the purchase was longer than a year and was forced to pay a lot of money to get it fixed. theres also another fault with ps3's (yellow ring of death)
microsoft did drop the ball with early 360 models with the red ring of death fault but thankfully they have fixed that (took them long enough)... but for them offering 3 years warranty was good gesture in comparison to what sony did with the ps2... how many of those has the average person gone through?
OK i guess I'll jump in the debate and I'll state all FACTS, HONESTLY,ALL FACTS:
GO into BestBuy or WalMart or Targetguess which console has the most boxes sitting on the shelf?? XBOX
I was in Target yesterday, 1 PS3 5or6 Xboxes and no Wii's. I normally just go look just to look. Similar story in BestBuy and Walmart. To even the score even more I went to a pawn shop 2 weeks ago trying to find a PS3 for cheap, they had one $299 (80GB) but someone had already bought it. I look on the floor and there is about 20 XBox 360's, ON THE FLOOR, may I remind you, the guy was like no one wants to buy them, everybody wants a PS3.
True, True, True, a Chrystlyer 300 (XBox) looks kinda like a Bently (PS3), but to get one and then try to down the Bently for it's price is insane. And to compare features is even more crazy.
XBox developers have already admitted that the XBox has reached it's limits, Microsoft is already planning on a new console (more money for you to spend) While PS is steadily add more and not even scratching the surface on the PS3's full potential.
My problem with the XBox is, I cannot put in the size HardDrive I want as I can with the PS3, and it does not void my warranty, sure not everyone needs WiFi and not everyone NEEDS bluetooth on a cellphone but if you bought you a new $200 phone and they told you to pay extra for buetooth you'd be pissed. The reason why everyone brings up the wireless and/or harddrive is to compare FEATURE SET TO FEATURE SET. If not then PS2 is the cheapest.
As for the person saying how unreliable WiFi is, I think you need to get out more and do some shopping. (I wonder why all these people are in Starbucks on the unreliable WiFi???? In-Home WiFi works pretty darn good, those HARDCORE gamers you mention play COMPUTER GAMES not XBox/PS3/Wii. Wireless G works at 54Mbps, Wired XBox/PS3 100Mbps, a wired PC 1000Mbps. Thats why they love a WIRED connection.
BluRay hey has more space, meaning you can add more content, funny people keep saying it doesn't matter, so odd, seriously more space to add more game content doesnt matter??
MS is a software company, we all know of the problems with Windows, so it's expected that their attempt at hardware will have some problems also.
Funny thing to measure as stores won't stock what they can't sell.
Other anecdotal evidence form my area:
My local Costco has stopped carrying PS3 consoles, games, and accessories. They still stock Wii and 360 consoles and titles.
My local Wal-Mart has moved the PS3 diesplay to the back of the electronics section and given it half a cabinet. The WII and 360 have two full cabinets.
My local Target has started stocking their Blu-Ray movies in the PS3 display instead of putting games there.
I am sure all these are great signs as to the demand of the PS3.
But the PS3 numbers are real.
360 and Wii are both heavily modded systems. I say 1-2% of all consoles sold are home to people who don't pay for games.
