When you tale the total amount of consoles sold of the 360 since its launch and compare them to the number of PS3 consoles sold since launch and divide it by the number of months that they have been available at retail, Sony has a higher average number of sales than the 360 does even including the resent months where MS dropped the price on the entry level 360's and even with a 12 month period with no current generation competition.
So what that tells me is MS is selling more systems now, but the system had a very slow start and took a long time to reach the point that its sales were higher per month than the PS3. Where as the PS3 has had more consistent sales from the start, with people buying the console despite the very high price and lack of games etc that everyone always mentions. In the end I don't see how Sony won't sell way more consoles by the end of the consoles lifetime than the MS will. If they have been doing so at a high price point any price cuts / slim model will do nothing but increase their sales same as it has with the 360.
Also, while its not a guarantee of a sale, at some point the people that have not gotten any of the current consoles will do so and people tend to stick with the same brand out of loyalty which means that with 34 million in sales the 360 has already sold way more than there were xbox units. At 25 million the PS3 has barely put a dent in the installed base of PS2 users that has something along the lines of 140 million units and still selling strong. Heck it actually still outsells the PS3 and until recent months the 360 too.
We don't have any current generation systems in our house but we are planning on getting one and since I don't play it (computer gamer) i gave my wife and son (14) the choice of what system they wanted and they chose the PS3. We already have a Blue-Ray player in the living room and my computer in the den so that was a non-issue for us. Most of the games they prefer are on Sony consoles not the 360 we have just been holding off on replacing one of our three PS2's (slims) until the platform matured more and the games we would be buying it for came out. (final fantasy, kingdom hearts, ratchet and clank, GoW, etc )
That's something i simply don't understand... what makes you, and sony to believe that all the current ps2 users won't buy a xbox 360? i had a ps2 and bought a 360 (because it's better for me since all my friends also have one etc...). Sony constantly says "ooh yeah we are the best because our system is better in the long run and we've got tons of ps2 users that will become ps3 users..." WHAT MAKES THEM THINK THAT? it's note like they are offering a 50$ discount for ps2 users that buy a ps3 or something like that... It will be interesting to see how the microsoft's natal and the ps3 eye control (or whatever it will be called) will do and how will nintendo react ( vitality sensor. lol). Because in my opinion these controlers will play a big role in deciding who stays in second place in this console war (if not first place).
What's with controllers? Don't you get it? A major, significant PRICE DROP is coming. And possibly a new model.
For Sony to sell the PS3 in the same numbers as the 360 from launch, at a MUCH higher price point is impressive. MS can spin all they want.
And the argument of PS2 owners migrating to PS3? Yep, many will get 360's. But many will also get PS3's. Many, believe it or not, have been waiting for what is about to happen.
To answer your question, because history says that a portion will in time switch and maintain the same brand attachment. Happens in cars (people buy one GM after another just like their parents did), TV's (people by an RCA because thats what they always had growing up), computers (people order a new Dell every couple of years and ones for the kids because they haven't had a problem with them), Could be whirlpool washer and dryers, keymore refridgerator, Luiseville Slugger baseball bat. People tend to stick with what they know. Especially parents that buy systems as gifts.
You say that you purchased a 360, well good for you. So did a lot of the people posting here in favor of the PS3. I'd say there is a high percentage of people that post on these forums for the PS3 that say they have both or even all three systems. Since you want to use your personal experience as proof. Here is mine.
My son had an XBox and a PS2, He had close to 50 games for the XBox (need for speed, oddworld, halo, pretty much all types of games) he has close to 200 titles on the PS2 ( ratchet and clank, final fantasy, kingdom hearts, gow, need for speed, guitar hero). He has 3 friends on the street we live on that he trades games with and they have rotate to the varrious houses to play together. They all had XBox consoles originally and played Halo together. He was the only one with a PS2, and he had a PS1 before that. Now they all have PS2 slims, they all got rid of their XBox's. One has a 360 that they play halo 3 on and a PS2, one has a PS3 80gb original with BCand a PS2, and my son and the other boy have DS handhelds and their PS2's . They all like playing on the PS3. The boy with the 360 has sent it in for repair twice and then bought a second Elite model and got rid of the first one. None of the boys want a 360, including the one that has it and wants to get a PS3 instead. They all want PS3 consoles.
Last christmas I asked my son what he wanted for christmas, even offered to get a 360 for him, and he said no he wanted a PS3 because the next kingdom hearts, ratchet and clank and gow will be on PS3. I told him he could have it if he waited for this year because last fall I had read so much about no games out for it yet, BC was pulled out and the games he wanted weren't coming out till this holiday season or later. 14 years old and offered a new console and he turned it down to wait a year....a YEAR...for the PS3. When I was 14 a year would have been like saying wait an eternity. But my son and the others in his little gamer group sat in the living room and talked to me about it and having played both systems, all preferred the PS3. They all have PS2 slims, puls the one PS3 now and they have traded in their XBox's and XBox games for PS2 games at the local game store. Even the one with the 360 buys more PS2 games than 360 games these days so they can trade back and forth and try to beat each other at games.
You are making a good point. Price matters and price drives sales. Take for example, the fact that despite the high price of the PS3, and after a year on the market, Sony started consistently selling more PS3 units each month than the XBOX. But the cost of producing the XBOX was reduced by removing the hard disk drive and the price was subsequently dropped to $199; at which point the $199 console became the highest selling console in the XBOX line. Look at the Wii, it is an innovative system with no hard disk drive and surprisingly low resolution (thus reduced cost of production); resulting in a great price of $250. Result? It outsells both the XBOX and PS3. So Sony's PS3 should do well once the price is reduced to $299.
@Mark Anderson Yes because they like it, and need to replace their broken one again. Xbox360 sales numbers are highly suspect to me, they have sold A LOT of replacement consoles and they dont break those into their own number. And who is to say they arent tallying the replacement units they send out as sales?
Its obviously silly to try and argue anything that isnt pro microsoft on engadget any more hence all the massive down ranking by what i know is a few idiots with multiple accounts and no life, so im going to end my point here.

The Xbox's sale rate is currently greater than that of the PS3. This despite it being over a year older.

@ above (Mark Anderson and below)
And the PS3 is MUCH more expensive..

That and GT5 for Christmas. Nice.

@Phil
You know people might be buying the Xbox not because it's cheaper but because the prefer it.
Just a thought.
@dennisheadley,
