Dell officially developing 'mobile devices' for China Mobile
If you're going to go, you might as well go big, right? In a confirmation for the ages, Dell spokesperson Andrew Bowins has clearly stated that the company is "developing mobile devices for China Mobile," giving the Round Rock powerhouse access to the biggest mobile subscriber base on the entire planet. Unfortunately, he didn't confirm nor deny whether the Mini 3i that we peeked this morning would be amongst the first to launch, but obviously you won't find us gasping should it happen. Beyond that, details on the whole arrangement are scant, but here's hoping that Dell trucks those handsets over to this side of the drink in short order.

Gnarlyyyyyyyyy
Not the best cellphone design I've seen, but very looks very "American" and flashy and Chinese loves this, because of the specs it seems like a very cheaply made device designed to be sold cheap. It can be a success.
Well, the title of the article should be "Dell officially COPYING 'mobile devices' for China Mobile" I understand the author can't state truthfully on this web site but most readers know what Dell does -- run copy machine! ;)
It's same as the "ophone". I think it's don't have wifi, and the OMS is strange for me.
Before everyone asks...
China Mobile doesn't have a 3G network so this phone doesn't have 3G.
China Mobile doesn't want to sell phones with WiFi (including the iPhone) so this phone doesn't have WiFi.
This phone is using TD-SCDMA

tim
China Mobile does have the TD-SCDMA 3G network, Mini 3i has no 3G probably because Dell doesn't want to develop their first handset based on a Chinese domestic standard. China Mobile also sells plenty of phones with Wifi, such as the Lenovo O1, they just have to use WAPI security standard instead of WPA/WPA2. Dell didn't include this function probably due to the aforementioned reason as well.
What a smart way to get into this sector...Dell, please refine a lot before moving any product stateside, if ever.
Good for dell.
Correct me if i am wrong , Dell manufactures laptops in china/korea/Taiwan whatever , through some contractors and assemble as Dell laptops and sell them in US and other countries, so in this case Dell is going to make mobiles in china through Chinese itself and sell it to the chinese service provider with DELL logo and raised price!
In that case what the heck does the Chinese provider need Dell for? why cant they manufacture their phones themselves , and put that extra money on infrastructure development rather than paying for DELL logo?
Ze logo iz shinyyy.. I like ze shinyyy logo.. shiny shiny shiny
Sorry, someone had to do it.
everything is made in china, well, the electronics i bought anyways. :)
believe it or not, even though they are made in china... electronics in asia are at the same prices or even much higher than in usa.
@Louisville: if you're watching the KIRF game you'll realize that what's missing from the home-grown market is the ability to make new designs. This is what Dell brings and they can capture a large chunk of the Chinese market by mixing their design and experience with the KIRF production chain. They are fighting HTC on this. They would have gone earlier but this is going to so annoy Microsoft that they had to wait until it was inevitable.
Side-effect: a new wave of Dell break-away (from MS-X86) netbooks running ARM + Android. China is the testing ground and first market, then India, Brazil, Africa, and then Europe and the USA last of all. Well, maybe Africa last of all, as usual.
Dell is gunning to get almost all of the china market in five years.
I guess the NOKIAs,APPLEs,RIMMs, PALMs and WinMos of the world might want to give Dell some respect.
They can sell laptops PCS and phones too. Before we know the cost of making smart phones will fall from 200 dollar range to 100 bucks.
APPLE and BB can no longer rest in peace on a price point. I love it.
Too little, too late. iPhone 3G with WIFI is $99!
Android. It's all about Android. Dell is going to be one of many big name firms producing mobile phones first for BRIC, and then for the rest of the world. Lenovo, Acer, Asus, HTC, and then a hundred little Guandong hardware shops.
First down, Windows Mobile. Next down, Symbian. End game is Apple vs Android.
It's the year of Linux, just not quite the way everyone expected.
Yup,
Andriod will flood the cheap phone market.
Dell did it in PC world, now they want to do it in mobile world.
DELL knows how to make devices cost effectively.
Unless APPLE and BBs keep the fanbois interested , the day of 50 dollar smart phone is here.

Now this is good business. Go after China first with a mobile design that is as barebones as they come, put it in a pretty-ish package, and voila, you've got lots of cash. And really, isn't that the point?
Why would we need such a crippled crappy phone in the US?
Dell logo instead of Apple it looks the same than the iPhone from the back
