NVIDIA confirms Tegra processor within Zune HD, details it real good
It's no big secret that NVIDIA's potent Tegra chip will be powering Microsoft's forthcoming Zune HD, but up until now, the former company had been rather quiet about its involvement in the project. Just a few days after the OLED-equipped portable media player went up for pre-order around the web, NVIDIA has stepped in to affirm that its own Tegra processor will be "providing the multimedia muscle in Zune HD." We're told that no fewer than eight independent processors make up Tegra's collective whole, with each one engineered for a specific class of tasks; among them are an HD video processor, an audio processor, a graphics processor and two ARM cores. Each of the chips can work together or independently to minimize power consumption, and the built-in nPower technology is said to optimize system power use and enable extended HD video / MP3 playback time. Sounds good in print, but we've got just under a month to find out how it performs for real.

Very cool. This thing seems like its leaps and bounds above anything that's come out before. This coming from an iPhone, 3G, 3GS, owner.
and another iphone owner... a zune phone like this with winmo7 will be hard to best.
Stop teasing, I want it :(
I tipped engadget on this yesterday!!
The NVIDIA site also claims that the ZuneHd will offer "days of battery life".
Why did it not matter when I submitted it!?!?
Because nobody likes you.
@sacapuntas
Nobody believes you. Engadget is our leader, and we follow blindly in their wake.
In all seriousness though, that's happened to me like five times now. It started way back when Engadget still liked Apple! That's right, I've been around THAT long...
@pczuneman
I ranked you up. D':
fap fap fap...
Engadget has always credited any links i sent their way...
"...each of the chips can work together or independently to minimize power consumption, and the built-in nPower technology is said to optimize system power use and enable extended HD video / MP3 playback time..."
...WOW, am surprised he didn't mention that they sprinkled each chip with magic fairy dust..on both sides!
(I wait to see this awesomeness)
Srly, me too. That pic of the screensaver looks like sex in space, so cool and nice.
ARM + Tegra > Atom
Tegra or Tiger is irrelevant! No games, no 3rd party apps on Zune. Are you going to tell your buddy that Tegra is playing your MP3 music? :)
Hello, Engageteers. Why are you all hating me!?!? All of my comments get down-ranked for no apparent reason. I want to know some kind of reason for the lameness of being down-ranked every single time I post....
@sacapuntus,
It's not "every" time.
Honestly though, plenty of your comments have a "See guys, I'm cool" vibe to them.
e.g.
@pczuneman
I ranked you up. D':
@sacapuntas: I don't hate you!
People sometimes people take a few misplaced comments and then automatically down rank you every time they see your name. Even without reading your new comments. You must have pissed off the community somehow?
...Or maybe the comment system is auto-down-ranking you to save time. :) Jokes!
I suggested reading your old posts to find out, then going to confession (Tell the priest I sent you). 7 Hail Marys should do it!
@Jelly: Read more. Maybe next time you can avoid making yourself look stupid.
@OneLove
They were going to sprinkle fairy dust, but Apple bought up all of Samsung's supplies of the stuff, so they gave it a Tegra instead.

Jelly: Too much stupid for one post.
Jon,
Get this!

Jon,
No response?

Jon,
Another chance for response?

@Jelly
Wow spam much? Mark told you to read more because what you're saying is contradicted by various sources which said games and apps will be on the device but they're not ready to discuss timing and method details. One source even noted an apps menu item on the Zune they played with (I forget which one).
Sounds good.
But someone actually needs to write some code that utilizes the processor muscle. How often have we seen great hardware crippled by buggy or unoptimized drivers? HTCs offerings come to mind (remember the Advantage?)
I would have loved for the Zune to be 25% larger with the same graphics capabilities....
3" is just too small for any useful purpose, including video-viewing.
To be honest, size shouldn't make much of a difference. Most other competitive and successful devices in this industry have either smaller screens or screens that are bigger by less-than-an-inch margins. I think once people get the device in their hands they will forget about the screen size.
First of all, it's 3.3 inches, 25% bigger would make it more than 4". Don't know about you but I wouldn't want to put that in my pocket. Also, judging from the videos it looks like they are utilizing that power pretty well...
I like the sound of your voice too..
tell that to everyone that owns an ipod.
the screen is actually 3.3 inches 16:9 so movie viewing should be fantastic (better than on the itouch). A larger screen would make it less portable. If you need a bigger screen get an archos or something... :\
If it was bigger it would huge and annoying in my pocket... kind of like that god damn dinner plate I call my ipod touch.
Just hold it closer to your face if screen size is that big of a deal. Problem solved.
Go buy a Netbook, or wait for the iTablet
3.3" is just fine, I don't think any iPhone/iPod users ever complained about their 3.5" (not very wide) screen. Sure you can't read subtitles on it, but if you really want to watch movies, get a 7" archos.
the tegra processor was actually designed by mr t, not a lot of people believe it, but its true
I herd that
I pitty the foo' who doesn't believe who doesn't believe this!
well, that's the word on the street...
designed by mr. t... created by chuck norris.
Turns out it wasn't a 3rd fist under his beard.
It was a Zune HD.
Daddy?
YES I LIKE ZUNE HD NEWS
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Wow... the Engadget comment system actually made me reply to MYSELF.
Woah... that was strange... Apparently replies to him go straight to you pczuneman.
It's funny, because pczuneman's self-reply was actually posted before all of these other replies.
Engadget comment system is SO AWESOME.
I've never had a comment go to a wrong place. Am I doing it wrong?
Only a couple months too late with the update.
@Aaron
YES. YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG.
BOSS!
Indeed.
It's too bad it's not a phone. Boy, that'd be a killer threat to any current cellular mobile device.
