Samsung launches TouchWiz SDK for cross-platform bliss
Now that Samsung's standardized on the TouchWiz interface across its entire touchscreen line -- dumbphone and smartphone alike -- they've created a fertile playground that offers developers the opportunity to reach a good chunk of the world's second largest phone manufacturer's devices. A dedicated software development kit for TouchWiz is now available direct from Samsung, and since your average code monkey doesn't necessarily have access to fifteen different phones running multiple versions of every platform Sammy supports, they're also offering up their Virtual Device Lab that'll let devs test their wares on everything the company has on tap. For distribution, Samsung will have a number of channels available: its Application Store, a new Widget Gallery that'll premiere on Verizon's Omnia II launching later this year, and -- perhaps most tantalizingly for developers -- the possibility of inclusion right in the frickin' ROM if Samsung really loves what you've done. Considering that you're targeting S60, WinMo, and a wealth of proprietary OS devices in one fell swoop, this could end up being a huge distribution channel.

This is all good, but still just an dream as we have yet to see a release of this phone.
Would you like to fly?
Oh man, sign me up for a dev kit! I'd love to make some touch/accelerometer games.
Can you make me a widget?
"Now that Samsung's standardized on the TouchWiz interface across its entire touchscreen line"
The instinct isn't using the TouchWiz UI... or am I wrong?
You are correct, Instinct is a custom OS, designed by Sprint's UI team.
Ziegler,
No Nokia news today? LOL.
---
I like Samsung's touchwiz. I have the Omnia and I want the Omnia II. MORE WIDGETS.
Ziegler *claims* to be a S60 fanboy but in all honesty he is actually a NOKIA S60 fanboy. That's why he's posted 1% as much Samsung Omnia HD news as he has Nokia N97 news.
He's a truly terrible person and I wish bad things upon him.
Aw. I lub Ziegler. He's my fave. Apple fanboy or Nokia fanboy. It doesn't matter. He's still my #1 Engadget writer. Z POWER!!!!!
@iLoveApple Stop being low-life troll who is disruptive to society and do something useful for once besides hating on everyone else :P. (Nothing Personal)
Hey, what's a better major for college, electrical engineering or computer science?? I think CS would be best so I could work at Google, Apple, or MS etc...
Mechanical Engr > CS/EE
Why don't you combine the two: Computer Engineering.
At MSU, Computer Science is more 100% Software related, while Computer Engineering is 50% Electrical Engineering (hardware) and 50% Computer Science (software).
Yeah, but I plan to specialize in Artificial intellegence, and don't know how much EE I'll need to know for that... oh well, thanks for your input!
BTW. If you want lots of replies. Wait till an Apple-related article is posted or something about the Zune HD. People come out of the woodwork to reply to those.
Isn't this just win mob? So isn't it just win mob development? Weird, I assume they are not creating real api's etc
"TouchWiz interface across its entire touchscreen line"
so no. you're thinking of the omnia 2 and omnia pro which have the touchwiz 2.0 interface on top of winmo. you will also find touchwiz on feature phones such as the jet -- which is pictured above, eternity, solstice, and the impression. and you never know, they might throw it on the galaxy as an option as well.
MOAR WIDGETS!?
It is all a pipe dream Samsung promises soo much and gives NOTHING. Dream on everyone I have 3 samsung phone with the latest being a Eternity from AT&T and they promised an update but we got NOTHING.
So expect nothing from them and you will not be disapointed.
Anybody want to buy an Eternity?
I have an Impression. I'm not holding my breath for Samsung to offer anything new to existing customers.
@rudy, where did you get the "promises so much" from? they haven't promised anything. i to have an eternity.
I have an Eternity, collecting dust now. Went back to Nokia and the 5800. Awesome phone. Puts everything else out there to shame.
Also have an Eternity. I wouldn't mind the 'broken promises' (among them, early website faq notesd ability to ADD and remove widgets from bar) as long as there was some effort to update the phone with firmware/software fixes. Otherwise it's just a four month phone. That's about the time it takes each new model (impression, solstice) to arrive. Really struggling with what phone to move on to, since iphone is only 'true' option with similar features (and don't want $30 data fee).....
Can you tell me the price of samsung S5230 in India. And on what platform/OS does this phone run. Could you Reply me me please...
