Sony unveils slimmer PS3: $300, lands in September (updated!)

The new 3.0 firmware will be released concurrently with the PS3 slim, which should provide a breath of fresh air for existing machines. Other new features of the PS3 slim include BRAVIA Sync, which allows you to control the PS3 XMB over HDMI through your BRAVIA TV remote, and System Standby to shut off the PS3 when the BRAVIA TV is off. Sony also claims this new machine will run more quietly than existing PS3 systems, which is good news for people who like to watch movies or have conversations in the general vicinity of their game console. There's also a Vertical Stand, which will retail for $24. Not so awesome is Sony's removal of the Install Other OS feature... farewell, Linux. We hardly knew thee.
Update: We've got press shots! Check 'em all in the gallery below, and be sure to pore over that to-scale comparo pic up top. There's one from above as well, which reveals that the new model is actual "deeper" than the PS3 fat.
Update 2: Video! Our main man Jack Tretton talks up and shows off his spanking new slim PS3 after the break. We've also got a full rundown of the specs for your perusal, and added some new information above.

Lower Price to Further Accelerate Expansion of the PlayStation(R)3 Platform Along with Extensive Software Title Line-up for Upcoming Holiday Season
TOKYO, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today unveiled the new PlayStation®3 (CECH-2000A) (body color: charcoal black) computer entertainment system, featuring an extremely streamlined form factor with a 120GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). The new PlayStation®3 (PS3®) system will become available in stores from September 1, 2009, in North America, Europe/ PAL territories and Asian countries and regions at a very attractive recommended retail price (RRP) of US$299 and euro 299, respectively. The system will become available in Japan on September 3, 2009, at a RRP of 29,980 yen (including tax). With the introduction of the new PS3 system, SCE will also reduce the price of the current PS3 with 80GB HDD to a RRP of US$299 from August 18 and euro 299 from August 19. Also in North America, the price of PS3 with 160GB HDD will be reduced to a RRP of US$399 from August 18. By launching a vast library of exciting and attractive software titles for PS3 this holiday season and offering customers a line-up of hardware models and pricing to match their preference, SCE will build on the momentum and further accelerate the expansion of the PS3 platform.
The internal design architecture of the new PS3 system, from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism, has been completely redesigned, achieving a much slimmer and lighter body. Compared to the very first PS3 model with 60GB HDD, the internal volume as well as its thickness and weight are trimmed down to approximately two-thirds. Furthermore, power consumption is also cut to two-thirds, helping to reduce fan noise. While inheriting the sleek curved body design of the original model, the form factor of the new PS3 system features a new meticulous design with textured surface finish, giving an all new impression and a casual look. With the compact body and casual appearance, the newly introduced model will appeal to a wider audience who are looking to buy the best entertainment system for their home.
Concurrently with the release of the new PS3 system, SCE will modify the PS3 brand name from "PLAYSTATION 3" to "PlayStation 3", and introduce a new "PS3" logo, which is engraved on the surface of the new PS3 system. By unifying under the familiar "PlayStation®" name, which represents the entire PlayStation family, PS3 together with PlayStation®2 and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) will further expand the PlayStation business, and will continue to enhance the entertainment experience along with the ever-growing PlayStation®Network.
The new PS3 continues to offer the cutting-edge features and functions of the current models, such as the ability to enjoy high-definition Blu-ray disc (BD) movies and games, as well as various content and services downloadable through the network. The new PS3's storage size has increased from 80GB to 120GB, and with the extra capacity users will be able to store more games, music, photos, videos as well as various content and services available through PlayStation Network. Having more than 27 million registered accounts around the world, PlayStation Network offers more than 15,000 pieces of digital content, ranging from game titles, trailers, and demos to more than 15,000 movies and TV shows via PlayStation Store(*1). PlayStation Network members can also download free applications, such as PlayStation Home, a ground-breaking 3D social gaming community available on PS3 that allows users to interact, communicate and share gaming experiences, as well as Life with PlayStation, which offers users various news and information on a TV monitor in the living room by connecting the PS3 to the network.
Since the launch of PS3 in November 2006, the number of BD-based titles has reached more than 1,000 titles and downloadable PS3 games to 1,400(*2) titles worldwide, with the support from a broad range of third party game developers and publishers. In addition to this extensive software title line-up, exciting and attractive new titles are to be released from SCE Worldwide Studios, including Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, EyePet, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, MAG, ModNation Racer, Gran Turismo 5 and more.
Other features of the new PS3 include:
PS3 system software update version 3.00
Concurrently with the release of new PS3, system software will be upgraded to version 3.00 on September 1. The update adds various user-friendly features such as the "What's New" screen, where users can quickly browse the new items available in PlayStation Store as well as their recently played games directly on the XMB(TM) (XrossMediaBar), with short cuts to each piece of content. PS3 will evolve continuously with the system software updates, further improving the operability and enhancing the user experience available through the network. PS3 owners will be able to enjoy new features by simply updating the PS3 system software to version 3.00 via the "System Update" function on the XMB(*3).
- BRAVIA(R) Sync(TM) Feature
The new PS3 system is also equipped with the BRAVIA(R) Sync(TM) feature. By connecting the new PS3 system and a BRAVIA TV with the HDMI cable, users are able to directly operate the XMB on PS3 using the TV remote
control. Other functions include "System Standby" that will automatically turn off the PS3 system when the BRAVIA TV is turned off(*4).
- "Vertical Stand" for new PS3 (CECH-2000 series)
By utilizing the separately sold "Vertical Stand", users will be able to set the new PS3 in vertical position(*5), making it easier to place the PS3 system anywhere at home. The vertical stand will become available in Japan on September 3, 2009, at a RRP of 2,000 yen (including tax) and in North America at US$24(*6).
- Removal of "Install Other OS" feature
The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other

I guess this comment goes out to the people that don't have a PS3 and think that this one is currently ugly. If you don't like the look of the Slim PlayStation3, then go buy the bigger one for the same price. Bestbuy and Walmart and other stores have already initiated the $100 drop. Good luck and have fun. I'll be going on my PS3 now.
It looks fugly!
It odd every generation of the device brings a bigger hard drive, yet less internal features.
So mine has 4 usb ports, Linux support, memory slots, PS2 emulation, a more beautiful casing.
The newer one loses all this stuff for samller casing, flat black paint job, and a 120 Gb hard drive.. and now $100 less... Well I guess I see where the price drop went into effect.
And finally some good game titles coming out, like Madden 10, Assassin's Creed 2, GT5 (prologue be damned), GH5, Weapons of Warefare2... there is a good time to look at a new PS3 if your in the market.
Yeah, but where are the games? Here is the reality PSP fanboys, bluray is cheap now. The PSP is no longer a cheap bluray player that happens to play games. You lost your only argument in the 360 vs. PS3 debate. The PS3 is supposed to be a game console not a video player. Where are your games? Where are your games? One more time, where are your games?!
Psp? Jesus, if your going to rip into ps3 owners on a ps3 news update, at least get the console right.. and secondly, im happy with the amount of games for ps3, obviously the fact i also have a 360 plays a big part in that, but i have to say this, i was much happier handing over my $999 AUD for my ps3 that had a bluray player, wireless net, browser etc than i was shelling out the $720 for the elite and having to pay another 100 for wireless, without a browser, LET ALONE BLURAY, and lastly no rrod hassle! man, i never understand how ppl ever whinged about the price... especially when normal bluray players are the same if not more, now its cheaper?! (although a bit dodgier looking)
Yeah, but where are your games. Your quote " im happy with the amount of games for the ps3" is typical. Sorry man, it’s not about quantity it's about quality. And further more, my mistake with accidentally calling it a PSP when it is a PS2 further emphasizes the consoles unimportance.
Uhhm, LBP, MGSIV, Uncharted, Killzone 2, Resistance 1 & 2, the Ratched and Clank's, inFamous, Valkeryia Cronicles, GT5:Prolouge, Motorstorm 1 & 2, Warhawk and Whipeout HD are games I prefer over the xbox 360 exclusives. Not to mention the upcomming releases. When it comes to choosing multi-platform games I always look at DLC exclusivety and extra features (ninja gaiden sigma for example), and when that's not the chase I randomly pick a platform.
I sure hope that "approx. 250W" is a maximum rated power rather than an averaged value. How, precisely, would that be "consuming 34 percent less power"? My original PS3 routinely sucks up 130 Watts, which I find to be quite costly.
Is anyone else concerned about the power consumption of their consoles?
That thing looks horrible!!
I still love my huge PS3
i kind of prefer the 80 gb. it looks better and has a very betterlogo the only better point in the slime is price
I love the concept of a new slimmer ps3 and the 120 gb hard drive is great but ive got to say that I prefer the look of the original ps3 much better.
Will this be able to bitstream DTS-HD, Dolby TruHD? Or is it still PCM?
Even better is that now you can buy the PS3 Slim for $254 - http://www.tvlampsnbulbs.com/2009/09/ps3-slim-for-254-45-off-msrp-with-free-shipping/
can it play PS2 games?
can it play PS2 games
how much does it cost in the middle east????????
please reply
i dont think it looks that bad actually i kinda like it
i do agree that the old one looks better
but that price is good
and i have a ps1 and ps2 still so i dont care
total score
