Sony sneaks PS3 Slim through FCC under pseudonym, 250GB model discovered
Shenanigans were afoot in Sony's efforts to throw bloggers (such as yours truly) off the scent of the just-announced PS3 Slim in the FCC, and we've got to give them credit -- filing the thing as a "Computer Entertainment System" manufactured by "Sand Dollar Enterprise, Inc." managed to do the trick. Well played, Sony. Anyhow, it turns out that Sand Dollar's address is registered to Sony Computer Entertainment of America, which in turn leads us to the matter at hand: test documents for this sneaky bugger reveal a second model number, CECH-2001B, listed as a 250GB version of the console. For the math challenged, that's over two times the storage of the only SKU announced thus far, so if they can get this out for a reasonably modest bump in MSRP (we doubt it) and get it out quickly, it might be worth the wait. Why it's legal for a company to falsify its name with the feds like this is unclear, but we'll admit, we respect and admire the effort. In fact, we'd be even more likely to buy a Slim if it came from a company called Sand Dollar, we think.

who cares. we all saw it coming :/
Did you see the "root kit" coming also? Avoid Sony like a virus. Oops, they are a virus.
^ you are a n00b.
back to topic:
The first thing that came into my mind after seeing the FCC stickers on the unboxing of ps3 slim here was, how did it get through FCC and not get detected by any of the blogs/fcc watchers. now we know :| .. very cunning sony. very very cunning! indeed
You underestimated the sneakiness... don't underestimate the sneakiness!
True cause sneakers will take you anywhere
Saved for TGS for sure, like the 160 version last year.
If this one plays PS2 games they may have a winner on their hands. Otherwise I PISS ON YOU, SONY!! O_O
The last 4 Released Version of the PS3 (40 GB in 2007, 80 GB in 2008, 160 GB in 2008 and 120 GB in 2009) all doesnt support PS2-Compability. They've plucked out the Emotion Engine + Graphics Synthesizer in Oct. 2007 with the Release of the 40GB version. The Versions released in March 2007 (60 GB) and August 2007 (80 GB) were running PS2-Titles only via Software-Mode and hasnt booth of these chips in it too.
Now tell me: Why do you think they would add those two chips (wich are not manufactered anymore btw) to the slim?

@Indyaner
The new plan of Sony's is to emulate the PS2 software using the cell processor(instead of external chips like the old system). Nobody knows when this will be a reality but they have filed for the patent over the idea(I have no idea why...who's going to steal "PS2 Emulation Within A Cell Processor"?).
My point is they are trying to work around not needing those emulation chips, in turn, making everyone happy again :)
and 6 years ago, everyone said you would never be able to emulate the ps2 emotion engine. hindsight is a bitch
Just buy the 120 gig and replace the HDD yourself...
+1
i doubt this SKU will have any different features... such as backwards compatibility, that ship has sailed.
Yeah they had better have something else to add .. it takes less then 5 mins to replace the HD and get it up and running .. But knowing Sony they will just take something away (PS2,Ability to add another OS,etc...)
but, but...they already took both! what else is there to take?!
thats what I was thinking.....hell its most likely going to cost $100 more.....for that price you can get a 500GB HDD and install it yourself.....
Just buy the 20GB with all the features that Sony left out in the 80GB and 120GB models and replace it yourself. Even better.
Just swap a 500GB or 1TB 2.5 SATA into PS3 then. So far the notebook PC standard in 2009 are 320GB HDD. What so special about 250GB when we are reaching the TB land.
1TB only if the PS3 supports 12.5mm drives. Because so far the only 2.5" 1TB drive is 12.5mm thick, not the industry standard 9.5mm.
Capacity hasn't been a problem for a long time. There are brackets on the market that let you use an external SATA drive instead. 1.5TB+ drives are not out of the question.
nothing gets by you engadget. :P
It wasn't unearthed by Engadget. See the source link.
lets be honest here the 360 is the superior product at the moment, today is a good day for Sony time will tell if this was a good move or not
lets see what tricks the boys at Redmond got under there sleeves.
"superior" is a matter of opinion. Both systems are powerful and have a lot of great games, but the PS3 plays Blu-Ray movies out of the box. For a lot of people, that matters more than the minor differences between the PS3 and 360 in terms of the games available for each system.
How is the 360 superior?
Everyone knows PC gaming is superior to both (PS3 - X360) consoles ...
U simply can't match the awesomeness that is Triple-SLI
360 is no way near what ps3 level, right now ps3 slim cost the same as 360 make no excuse.
Of course PC has better latest hardware, but is lacking gaming titles, especially this year very very good pc exclusive game coming out.
It's superior failure that is.
The only reason I find the 360 more appealing is because of Project Natal.
However, since Project Natal isn't implemented yet, I still like all the systems about the same.
After Natal is in full effect, I don't know what there is that truly rivals it.
Triple SLI? HA. What about Quad ;). Only joking, my ordered system is only coming with a single HD4890 and Phenom ii 940 :( (I couldn't afford an i7 basically) . Hopefully it will be better than my xbox 360?
Chris Ziegler is so awesome. I want to marry him and have his babies. I hope he isn't already taken?
wiat... you're a girl?......nah, it's impossible....
Impossible is nothing.
"iLoveApple" is a guy...
Are you sure?
Rules 29 and 30 of the internet.
LOOKS LIKE IT BELONGS NEXT TO THE ORIGINAL XBOX! That is the best they could come up with? I don't like it. The first one was sexy, matched the Bravia XBR series TVs and matched the PSP. This design looks like it takes a step backwards.
Damn I'm a flutz. You're comment just made me realize how the piano black/silver combination is exactly like the PSP and Sony's W/V/and XBR series...it's all so clear now!
And I personally like the PS3 but a little silver thrown in there wouldn't have hurt geez.
Sony doesn't own the entire building, if u look at the maps image, there's a suite # for Sony. the other company doesn't have a suite #... I work about a block away, so I'm somewhat familiar with their location.
So this other company makes the same type of products, operates in the same building, has the same Riley Russell from Sony's legal department, and just happens to operate a phone number from the same number "block" as Sony's main office?
so Sony has some friends in this other company which is willing to let them use their business name for some extra side $, and some free ps3 slims to boot......
It's quite possible that it's a real company, formed (and wholly owned) by Sony.
BUT WHY!?
Ceesus(Crust): for lulz, obviously
Almost certainly, it's a genuine, incorporated under the laws of the State of California, shell company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell_(corporation)). Perfectly legal to do.
You know what really surprises me, though? That Apple hasn't thought of doing this already!
There is nothing questionably legal about the Sony/Sand Dollar set up. At least they would need to give Sand Dollar a contractual arrangement to represent Sony with the FCC, at most it is possible they are importing/manufacturing the Slim via Sand Dollar. Either way, you can bet that Sand Dollar is not run by Sony outsiders.
BTW, if you didn't pick up on the joke, look for the next fake Sony to be called Conch, or maybe Mollusk.
I'm not sure I understand the joke. Isn't the name "Sand Dollar" just a random name Sony came up with to name their new company, or is there more meaning behind it?
WHAT? A -2001B. I think the slim now is -2000. So Possibly the 1 is a bigger hard drive, and B is a different color. Sliver anyone? hmm. Well I just bought a Slim. Had a 120GB hdd in my 20GB since '07. never filled it up. Black is fine. Can't wait for Sept 2nd..ish. I did one day shipping for $14
yeah this definitely stopped everyone from figuring it out
Well played Sony. But how can they get away with a pseudonym for a real product. I better see the Sand Dollar branding on my PS3, otherwise I'm going to be pissed off!
It is most likely a corporate move to not include BC. Think of the amount of PS2s they are selling at pure profit. Don't think that would happen if BC was included in the ps3 because everyone would then just opt for the ps3 instead and lose the huge profits from the ps2. It would be great for consumers to get BC on the ps3, but in the end, Sony's aim is to make a profit, and they do that by not including bc. It would only probably be included when the ps2 finally stops being produced.
