CBS's video ad for print not much better than its video ads for TV
Call us crazy, but this whole idea of embedding video in magazines (just like e-ink on the cover of Esquire) seems rather callous. Really, what better way is there to rub publishers' noses in the "death of print media" than by taking a perfectly good magazine and embedding a TV commercial? Apparently CBS doesn't see it that way, so they're taking Americhip's "multisensorizing" technology to an ad insert that will run in the September 18 issue of Entertainment Weekly. The ad, which will only be seen by subscribers in the New York and LA markets, plays about 40 minutes of video and, presumably, some crappy audio. We've tracked down a YouTube demo of the device (or similar), and although it does little to change our ornery opinion of the matter, we suppose that if it results in one more Ghost Whisperer fan it'll be worth it. Decide for yourself after the break.

Cuz I am looking forward to seeing ads in my peaceful reading (even though I have nothing to worry with right now) since it's all the gossip crap magazines.
is that Doogie Howser?
Yeah Niel Patrick Harris, he plays Barney on the show How I Met Your Mother on NBC. Good show and he is probably the best part of it.
Err i mean CBS, curse not being able to edit comments.
Is that a comment that's a reply to the first post that has nothing to do with the post that's being replied to?
Dumb.
F-THAT! Next thing I know I'll have little adds in my cereal bowl...
Better than subtractions in your cereal bowl :/
Also better than AIDS in your surreal bowl.
Sush you!!! Don't give them any ideas, you KNOW they'll consider it.
I wouldnt mind ads in my cereal as long as they are made of marshmallow.
how bout NPH in your cereal? i dunno if that'd be good or bad...
Seems like a waste of resources... can a regular paper recycler even handle this? If its got video and sound, I'm assuming there is a battery in there somewhere.
That's where you're wrong sir, it runs on fairy dust.
They will probably be used as posters in malls and on busy streets and such. Not sure but i would think that you can reuse them for different ads over and over.
Too... much.... orange...!! Burning... my eyes!!
Harry Potter comes to Entertainment Weekly.
Yeah, and figure out how patent 5,275,285 relates. "Business card holder with sound generating microchip." Wow, the beauty of patent law I guess.
How hackable is it ?
Ah, video in text books. Hack it and replace them with porn. :)
Hack it to play porn, add a touchscreen...
Does this mean they're going to start making cereal boxes like the one in Minority Report now? I'd really rather not have to throw my cereal box across the room when I'm eating.
You mean you wouldn't want to have a conversation with Cap'n Crunch like I did on the phone back in the 80s?
Come to think of it ... maybe that wasn't Cap'n Crunch afterall.
Eep ... I gotta go take a shower.
This reminds me of those kids books that read to you, or the birthday cards that sing to you... both of which are a bit annoying.
Are LCDs so cheap now we can put them in print runs of magazines by the thousands?
Yes they are... especially when OLED screens can be printed from an inkjet. Some company in China's gotta be manufacturing these, so if it expensive in bulk? Not at all.
Dude... Bump the Barnacle.
Hardware is tough to shrink down to something useful like this example. The future, my friends, is "augmented reality."

That won't make me watch CBS.
Now, that Bob Barker is gone, I have no more reasons to watch the network.
Except for NFL in the fall, but their cameras suck for sports.
And the Esquire ones just stopped going! Now I have a new one to watch!
The Esquire cover was still photos, not video.
Now start again.
Engadget seems an odd place to gather so many Luddites. You should be celebrating the "multisensorizing" experience and help chart a path toward it's progression and adoption.
Lame. It's not like they put the ad on regular piece of paper. It's the size of a full book or magazine just for one page with a poor quality video ad.
