New Sony Motion Controller video reveals pinata smashing, hair styling
Sony may not have done another full-on demonstration of its Motion Controller at this week's big Gamescom event, but it did at least put together a little video showing off some of its progress, and GameTrailers has now thankfully obtained the goods so everyone not there can have a peek. Of course, there's not exactly a whole lot in the way of actual new details, but we do get a glimpse of plenty of new potential applications for the controller, including using it as a paint brush, a magic wand, a torch, a bat to smash a pinata, or even an all-in-one hairstyling tool. Head on past the break to check it out for yourself.

Hmm. I won't judge until I get a proper hands on.
that's what she said.
Cool guy. But yea, let's wait for proper hands on.
Gee, it practically looks like a Wii controller. Way to go at keeping ahead of the game, Sony!
clearly you didnt watch e3, at e3 they said that isnt the final design of the controller.
True, but we do know that the crux of the technology relies on the big fat glowing ball on the end (the camera identifies the control from the position and size of the ball, and workrs out the orientation through internal mems devices).
So, the question is Wiimote or Glowballs?
Balls.
Honestly did Sony even try with it's motion sensing alternative? This preview seems like a cheap commercial that comes on between a 3a.m infomercial...
ITS THE 4TH DIMENSION !!!! :p are you ready?

So this will get all the girls and gay boys to practice their hairstyling ability! Great game.
So you are getting one on preorder I take it?
@McPOW
lmao
Why the hate? I'm gay, though an engineer and not a hair dresser.
People who take offense to stereotypes should just grow up!
I bought a PS3 because I'm a couch potato. If I want to flail my arms around in overcomplicated gestures that could be just as easily mapped to a button, I'd buy a goddamn Wii.
They just want to get in on the shovelware shitstorm that the Wii started.
Or, instead of a ps3 or wii you could actually go and do stuff, in real life, get in the yard play some badminton of ping-pong for real, it's fun and not too hard or expensive to set up really, doesn't have to be professional equipment just a wire and some cheap rackets, and what's more then you'll find a lot of the exercise you get from it is picking up that shuttle, which you don't do with the console versions.
Oooh someone's pulling the "I-have-an-awesome-outdoorsy-kinda-cool-life-and-so-should-you card"
There will still be coach-potato PS3 games for you to play I reckon.
@Wwhat
I dunno, everything you talk about presupposes you have, friends IRL. Personally, my friends habits concentrate on drinking beer and watching movies - ideal with a PS3. One poor bastard actually hosts a game of horseshoes every Friday; and is mercilessly mocked for it. I read about the outdoors once on nationalgeographic.com once, and it did not impress me.
Well my statements were based on his apparent insistence that you can ONLY use your body with a console, and that prompted me to point out there's other ways, it's not like I say the opposite and that you HAVE to go outside, I think your mom should be the one doing that :)
So take it in context please, it was merely meant to counter the original post's premise.
As for the practical objection of no friends, you can also bounce a ball of the wall, or try some bike or skateboard skills on some obstacles maybe, plus if you go out and are seen you might find other people bored and tired of the wii might join you for a game, depending on your neighborhood, some places you'd get shot instead of course, Real Time Action fun! Or taking of action, if you got the funds there's paintball gaming.
It doesn't have to be horseshoes or croquet, there less lame stuff, and as I said I was merely dispelling his suggestion there's only consoles.
Where did I insist that you could only move around using a console. My exact quote was "flail my arms around in overcomplicated gestures that could be just as easily mapped to a button..." I'm making fun of the Wii's insistence to making you shake the controller like an epileptic seizing, not saying that the only way you can get exercise is from waving your arms in front of a tv. Get over yourself.
Wow not only did they directly bite the Wiis control method but who designed this commercial??? Wario?
In before: Pathetic PS fanboys claiming this is somehow different than Motion Plus or Natal.
Actually it seems that it is like both, IN A GOOD WAY.
It is!
Regards,
PS phanboy
Aren't the Wii controlling scheme and Natal pretty different from one another? So really, whatever method Sony used, it would have to be at least somewhat different from one of them right?
I agree with you that fanboys are pathetic, but I truly believe anti-boys are just as pathetic ... possibly more so since they have to read and comment on an article for a product they clearly hate and have no interest in. ¯\(o_º)/¯
I think it's funny this comment was down ranked, because it speaks so much truth. I for one gave it a "plus"
@Autumn
On the contrary, I just ordered my PS3 slim, and watched the video in hopes of seeing something other than the same shovelware that the Natal demos have been derided for.
Not so much.
Figured I'd make a snarky comment in hopes of shutting up any fantards, before they got started.
No such luck though, just look at the exchange a couple posts south of this set.
But I hope you enjoyed your daily helping of self-important superiority.
The natal is going to work the best of the 3. You can still use an object and the camera just tracks it. I don't even see why they are bothering with this. THey should be trying to make somthing like that natal project.
Why is there an echo when I'm playing this. It's really annoying.
It's to keep you excited and a bit off balance and it's relating the 3D-ness of the thing.
Wow. That is more insulting than the $60 ($50?) Bluetooth keyboard accessory.
i think your forgetting that sony is the only company that is allowing you to plug in a 5 dollar usb keyboard, or a 20 dollar wireless keyboard.
its 50 dollars for the keyboard, and its eFFing sweet, with a touchpad and hotkeys. If your cheap you have the option to plug in the keyboard you probably already have in your home. Or buy a different bluetooth headset. Or buy a frag FX. Or a new 2.5" sata drive.
Go buy a 200 dollar microsoft 120 gb harddrive. Sony doesn't need your ungratefullness.
@ unboring
Your right, I love how all of the Xbots complain about cost of the PS3 and accessories, while they pay $50 a year for a non tangible item. If this was M$ making this controller, they would charge you $50 for the controller, $20 for the ball, $15 for the charge& play kit, $10 for the buttons, and it would probably have a 54% fail rate like its console brethren.
@Emblazin:
... and batteries sold separately.
"i think your forgetting that sony is the only company that is allowing you to plug in a 5 dollar usb keyboard, or a 20 dollar wireless keyboard"
FAIL, you can use ANY USB keyboard on the 360 (probably the Wii too, but who cares about that?)
"Go buy a 200 dollar microsoft 120 gb harddrive. Sony doesn't need your ungratefullness"
FAIL AGAIN, it's $120.

Xbox Live = $30 for 13 months if you'd care to look. Also, Xbox Live doesn't suck like some other online service...
Nah, probably just the fumes you're inhaling. It's not good to have your head that far up your ass all the time.
Note that this is just a developer update. That was a bunch of tech demos, no actual gameplay from upcoming games. Wait a year and then judge...then we'll be able to properly compare to Natal and whatever Nintendo may be planning (Motionplus doesn't seem like enough).
Well remember how the Wii started out as tech demos...and it's still at that stage. I expect the same from this, Natal will bring something different, but honestly Sony's glowing dildo is just a "me-too" of the Wii. HAIRSTYLING AND PINATA SMACKING, hellz yesaho omg!!1 sign me up sony es da shizzle!!!!! Seriously if I hear any fanbois backing this crap up I will reach through the Internet and punch them in the face. This is a pathetic attempt at motion control, the dude at E3 said it was a prototype before you even saw it because he knew it looked stupid. You also need to look at how the controller works, the camera tracks the glowing ball, therefore it is needed. It will very similar to what has been shown in the end, Sony only said it was a prototype because they know it looks stupid and they were trying to control the amount of hate the would, and deserve to, get for it.
i like how you can actually hold stuff.
did anyone notice that the pinata that was being whacked looked awfully similar to the "viva pinata" mascot?
Well obviously it was a nod to that game, just showing youc an use it for tons of stuff, but is a bit odd since it's a MS game but perhaps the commercial makers didn't realize :)
Not enough echo.
the ps3 with motion-sensing of the controller and players body...
MY DREAM HAS COME TRUE!!! :D
lol @ the "ancient gladiator" wearing a cowboy hat.
whats that game?
hopefully we will see an okami for ps3 that uses the motion controller
