Sony's PlayStation 3 Slim stand gets pictured... all $24 of it

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Sadly, people will still buy it.
$24 is actually not that bad.
Sony, a piece of plastic. Why I have to buy it seperate.
I will read this: Xbox is better Because you can stand vertical without paying. XD.
I completely agree, most companies provide something similar for a feature that isn't completely necessary. screen,
@kitchenmit: Seriously? Its function could be performed by 2 rocks. Hell, it probably costs them somewhere around 5-10 cents to make it.
Cue MadCatz...
People defend the 360 for making basic stuff optional (and overpriced) to keep a low price, but bitch when Sony does the same thing. At least there will be cheap third-party or free DIY options for this.
Timstew, I find it to be the other way round. People are always harping on Microsoft for charging something like 60 quid for the wireless adapter when it actually serves a purpose and costs a bit of money to produce, I'm happy to see people having a bash at Sony for charging what will probably be 20 quid for something that costs next to nothing to produce and adds no functionality to the console.
This reminds me of the Onion when they had the "Sony Piece of Shit". LOL! Youtube it.
This is some shit that Apple would pull.
@Timstew: You're making no sense, you realize that the 360 doesn't need a stand and the Wii comes with a stand. $24 IS insulting.
well u can just opt for the fat PS3, no stand required.
Timstew, you must be new to the internet. Welcome! Anyway, Microsoft is constantly bashed for having overpriced 360 accessories. It’s mainly the wireless adapter and the replacement hard drives that draws the most criticism. So with that said, when Sony starts charging nearly 25 bucks for a piece of plastic to stand your system up, they deserve to be bashed too.
I'll wait for Monster-branded stand. Thanks Sony but no thanks.
$24 for a stand! At least nobody is peddling wireless adapters for $100, now THAT would be ridiculous.
Jesus Christ, people, keep a little perspective here:
1) The PS2 stand was $19.99, ten years ago. That's $25.61 in 2008 dollars. This stand is actually *cheaper* than the PS2 stand was.
2) Nobody is forcing you to buy it. Just keep the system on its damn side.
3) You wanted thinner and you wanted cheap. Well, with a thinner system comes less stability. The original "fat" PS3 doesn't need a stand. Still, even if you decide you want a new PS3, and you want to stand it up, you're still paying $76 less than an older PS3.
Why the hell are you people complaining? Oh, I forgot, because it's the internet.
Still, the sense of entitlement around here is pretty irritating.
No you can't stand an Xbox360 vertical because it will scratch the shit out of all your discs.
Packaging a stand with each unit for the 5% of customers who might consider using it is not logical or cost effective. While the eventual unit price may be low, the original fabrication of an individual part is not nickel and dime and it all adds up.
@Ricky
Don't talk nonsense, my 360's been vertical for about 18 months now and I've encountered no problems whatsoever. If your stupid enough to move it while the discs spinning, you'll get scratches. Fairly simple.
You may get a free stand with your xbox, but with the PS3 you get so much more free, it is a better value here's why:
Free Wireless Controllers and battery
Free WiFi adapter
Free Blu-Ray Player (HD-DVD and future blu-ray addon for XBOX)
Free Playstation Network Access (vs costly xbox live)
HDMI included on all models (except the 1st gen 20GB PS3) vs XBOX having HDMI on only the premium models ( Typically $400+)
Standard SATA HDD vs low capacity proprietary high cost XBOX hard drives.
Free Bluetooth (works with all cell phone earpieces, keyboards, mice, etc)
Not to mention that the PS3 supports open standard USB devices like USB soundcards/headsets, standard Mice, standard usb keyboards, which means you are not stuck buying officially licensed crap that'll cost you both arms and legs.
Barcode, HDMI is on all models of the Xbox 360 now. The Elite was just the first model to have it, and it is the only model which includes an HDMI cable.
Xbox360 HDDs are SATA. If you were to take one apart, you can actually replace it manually. You just have to transfer the contents via other means, as sticking in a blank drive won't work on the 360. (Whereas a PS3 will automatically prepare the new HDD for you, and integrate it into the system, you have to do this manually for 360 HDDs, and it's a bitch.)
Also, all models of the Xbox 360 come with wireless controllers and there is NOTHING wrong with wired controllers. I love my wired controller. No batteries to worry about. The cord is really long, and it features a really nice breakaway section on the end. It's USB, and you can use it with your PC without having to buy a bluetooth adapter, wireless adapter, or an extra USB cord.
I do understand the problem with the rechargeable battery coming with the controller, but at the same time, I don't want it stuck in the controller. If that lithium ion battery loses it's capacity over time (which it will), you are going to have to buy a long USB cable, or a new controller. Doesn't sound like fun, whereas you can just go to your nearest desk drawer and pop in a couple of AAs or buy a new rechargeable pack.
Doesn't the PS3 Slim can stand vertically even without this ? (As seen on the engadget unboxing post)
@xValentine: being slimmer and lighter means less stability so it isn't can't stand upright without being knocked over easily.
manufacturers cost: 25 cents.
Now wait a minute there. It'll very likely have been sub-contracted so add in a mark-up and I suggest 30 cents is far more realistic - please!
It's all about the margin. They probably aren't making a ton on the system any more and they need to make up for the millions of systems sold at a loss.
Its more like a total of $2 when you add in packaging.
Then of course the final retail price includes such novelties as shipping costs, the retailers profit, the distributors profit and Sony's profit, cause you know everyone involved in its distribution and sale needs to get paid otherwise why do it.
That price isn't a Sony exclusive thing, think of this one.....look at the price of an iPhone case, they usually run about $25....do you actually think it costs them anywhere near $25 to make a case? NOPE, a silicon case with packaging runs about $1 per unit out of the factory.
Also forgot to mention that the tool used to make a plastic part like that isn't cheap and needs to be replaced after several thousand uses (the heat used to melt the plastic begins to wear down the tool over time), the replacement of this tool needs to be taken into account in the sale price also.
Wait for one from sites like Deal Extreme to sell for $2.99...
Or until monster cables releases one that improves picture quality by the way it cradles the case so specially, and is only $139.99+tax
No worries. If you wait three years, they'll drop the price!
Hmm - it won't fit in 3 years using the same logic!
thats what she said
Oh I'm definitely waiting for the slim version of this one!
@TeddyLikesComputahs!: That's what he said.
its a bad idea to get it anyway. the disc scratches easier than when it lays flat
Look on the bright side, they could have built it already standing up and THEN made us pay to lay it down.
Um.....I'll get my hat............
Don't forget mines!
So, the PS3 slim is really $323.99 + Tax!
...because we all know that we can't live without the console standing on its side.
So no Linux upgrade and now you can't stand it on the side? If you haven't you might as well but it now before Sony takes away the Blu-Ray or the ability for this thing to turn on...
323.98*
It's not borderline insulting. It IS insulting. Almost as insulting as putting composite cables with the console. Its 2009, spend an extra nickel and throw in an HDMI cable in there already >:(
whilst i agree, the problem faced is that there is still a large number of people out there without HD or HDMI equipped TVs. So yeh HDMI is great and would be good in box, but it is not a good option for sony if they want to have it accessible by the larger market.
not only is this stand insulting, but the fact that I need to keep my PS2 around because a state-of-the-art upgrade to said machine will spit out perfectly good PS2 discs. I have a first-gen PS3 that plays PS2 games, and I love it! Hopefully my machine will last, because since Sony crippled the PS3 by intentionally disabling PS2 support for NO F'ing REASION, I will lose all my PS2 compatibility. And they just don't make "Dukes of Hazzard" for PS3...
24 bucks for something that should´ve been included from the start?
You mean like the Apple dock that was included in the original iPhone?
That's where they get 8% of the price cut!
this really should be included, along with HD cables
They'd sell more if there were a Lacoste or Nike logo on it.
Just so you know, a ps3 is not a pair of shoes.
