Don't think you can sell the kids short anymore,
keeping the Blu-ray copy at home and taking DVD rips on the road, now that Panasonic is ready to deliver its in-dash Blu-ray player and 7-inch HD screen packing nav unit in September. We got a good
peek at these back in April and the specs haven't changed, with the Profile 1.1 Bonus View compatible CY-BB1000D taking care of Blu-ray duties and featuring the same UniPhier guts as the company's line of living room Blu-ray players. The CN-HX3000D is a WXGA 1280x720p 7-inch LED backlit widescreen display ready to play back media via standard HDMI, iPod connector, SD card or its digital TV tuner, powered by Windows Automotive with navigation duties assisted by Google Maps and Yahoo! Japan. The CY-BB1000D is ¥99,750 ($1,057) and the CN-HX3000D is ¥365,400 ($3,872), and both arrive September 10 in Japan. We'll let you decide if around 5 grand is a good price for the in car HD experience (might want to look at custom mounting a
DMP-B15, $800 and you can take it with you.)

Because HD quality is just so spectacular on a 7" screen.
So when you hit the passenger car in front of you at 45 mph, you can do it while being entertained.
>So when you hit the passenger car in front of you at 45 mph, you can do it while being entertained.
In HD...
so true!
First it was all over the news how txting while driving is so dangerous.
Now they want to put blu-ray in your dash? Oh dear..
So when you hit the passenger car in front of you at 45 mph, you can do it while being entertained.
With HD Porno...
I would think that whoever gets this system needs to be required to watch that Wales video on texting and driving, because fundmently it is the same, attention off of driving can lead to very bad thing. Now if it is in the back seat for the kiddies that is fine..have at it. :)
Before anyone else makes stupid comments like "Why the hell would you want a 7" screen for blu-ray?!" let me address it.
This is for people, like myself, who have started to acquire quite the collection of blu-rays already and also have in-dash DVD players that they use quite regularly. For me, there's no SIMPLE way of playing those blu-rays in my car, so if I'm going on a road trip and the kids want to watch something we own on blu-ray they're out of luck. This isn't about HD, this is about being able to EASILY play media that you own in your car.
That being said, there's no way in hell I would pay the prices they're asking for that luxury.
point taken
Wouldn't it just be a hell of a lot cheaper to buy a DVD version of whatever Blu-Ray film you're trying to watch at 60mph?
Yes, because the kids are in the front able to watch it. Why do you think that it will be a distraction for the driver? Unless you do a bypass on the system, it won't let you watch movies from the front w/o the ebrake pulled, so when the car is moving, only the RCA or hdmi outs will actually display the video. So only the kids in the back will be watching the movie while you are driving.
As for the 7 inch screen.... c'mon people, it has hdmi out! That's when you strap your 52 inch Sony to the front head rests and bam! You've got high def in your car! easy as pie :)
@Alasdair
Really? Why double up on movies you have on Blu-Ray in HD? What's the point in that?
@ Yousty... very good point.
Overall though, I disagree with this in-built dash idea - I find it would be too distracting. A friend has one in his car, and he is constantly looking down at it. It scares me a lot.
@copeys :
For $1000 (the same price of the cheap model), you can buy a decent portable dvd player and a bulk of movies.
Hmmm.... 7" Screen.....with HD.....
maybe its a prototype for PSP2... other wise I'd rather wait for benheck to make a slim ps3 portable
Yeah, I heard that Sony was going to let Panasonic take a run at the PSP2 and see if they could do it better.
I always knew this day would come
Is it me or are electronics prices massively overinflated just because they're "in-car"?
C'mon, 4 grand for a 7-inch screen(!) is plain ridiculous. It's more than a top-end Samsung/Sony LED-backlit tv for pete's sake.
Car tunning is a serious business.
Over $100 for a lousy AM-FM car radio is insane (there are audio car system for over $5000), and $1500 for each tire is nut.. but there are plenty of people that are willing to pay any price to pimp their ride.
Well, part of the extra cost is because these electronics have to be able to work under more rigorous conditions. These rigs have to be able to endure constant vibration while working, extreme heat, extreme cold, and still start right up just like the rest of the car.
Usually when places install this for you, video on the screen will only play when in park or when the parking break is on. There are ways around that though. 5 years ago a in dash dvd player was $1,500 and that was without navigation. There are always people out there that are gonna want this stuff!
best buy or other big box installers might require that safe installation, but other shops will install it so it works while you're rollin'. My 17 year old nephew just had one installed. Despite advance warnings from all the adults in the family (I exclude him from that category based on this decision alone) he had the installer hook it up so it's always working.
I told him he's out of the will and the weekly golf games are off until he gets it re-wired. His life's worth that to me.
There oughta be a law. I don't want to be driving in traffic with folks watching dvds on their dash, and it scares the bejeesus out of me that my kinds are driving on roads with those kinds of lunatics (nephew included).
end of rant.
I believe there is a law, which is why the equipment manufacturers install the parking brake connection, and reputable installers follow there guidance.
Wait until the policeman sees what is on your dash after the wreck; I am sure that his decision of who was at fault in the accident will be slightly swayed against you.
Whoa whoa wait, so it's powered by Windows Automotive... I guess I'd like to know if it'll have Zune accessibility.
