We still gotta wait
until November 17th to do our own virtual shredding, but for now you can gaze upon the FCC's well-intentioned (but generally pretty bad) gadget photography of the new
Tony Hawk: RIDE skateboard, the filing of which just went live in the commission's database. It shouldn't come as a surprise to owners of Activision's other plastic peripherals from the
Guitar Hero series, but PlayStation 3 owners will have to use the bundled USB dongle to connect wirelessly to the console -- Wii, too, according to its user manual, as the usual trick of
planting a Wii remote inside the controller isn't available here. Sad and ridiculous, but we can't imagine one dangling receiver will be a deal-breaker for many people out there -- unless, of course, you're able to buy the Xbox 360 version instead.

Oh
I think you can actually buy the real one for the same price, and still get laid!
I only have one leg (Seriously), I wish I could use this!
now i feel bad since i'll probably never buy this.
well...who knows? i said the same thing about rockband when i first heard about it.
How many overweight gamers are going to snap that thing into pieces the first day?
3 too many :D
when will they get that interactive gaming sucks. i have a wii, and i usually only play tiger woods golf (and that is only like once every 1 or 2 months) i had the eye toy for the ps2. i had fun for a month there. personally, the standard controller is the way to go.
Probably when all the tens of millions of *other* Wii owners stop liking it.
-Taylor
I'll try it. Could be fun. I don't know that I'll buy one though...
Maybe if I could use it on skate 2 instead.
I don't understand this. The PS3 and Wii both use the open Bluetooth standard, but require a dongle. The closed-down proprietary Microsoft system does not... What gives?
They decided to make it for the closed-down proprietary Microsoft system?
Spite mostly...
Actually, thinking about it more, it makes perfect sense. If they used Bluetooth then they'd have to make a bluetooth adapter for the xbox 360, which I'm guessing wouldn't be allowed by Microsoft. Using the proprietary system though, they can make adapters for the Wii and PS3 withing those consoles' guidelines and without breaking those of Microsoft.
If that is the reason, can I just be the first to stick up my middle finger and wave a big "F YOU!" to Microsoft
@Mark
The PS3 controllers are not using the Xbox protocol as I understand it. Instead they use a separate propriety protocol. If they used the same protocol it would stand to reason they would work across the platforms (unless that is deliberately sabotaged). And the whole incompatible music-game controller issues would also likely never have existed, as they have always worked with both games on the Xbox.
Anyway. I am pretty sure that MS would not allow their Xbox technology to be used on different platforms to begin with.
The fact is that the PS3 and Wii use the same OPEN standard, and MS is the one who is messing it up by using a proprietary system.
@Derry Quinn
Yeah. I meant the 3rd party controllers. Like this one and the music-game ones. Reading it again I suppose it could read as if I said the official PS3 controllers use also a propriety protocol.
@ derry quinn
right on
seriously, what they did was make one stupid controller to work w/ all three versions, then require two of the three to require a USB add on to work. I mean, would it really hurt your profits that much to make 3 different hardware versions?
So given that it's using a dongle to accept the MS wireless protocol, how long before this dongle is hacked so that you can use your MS peripherals with the PS3? Would help people who have other peripherals (guitars, drums, etc) for the 360 but not the PS3.
It looks more like the iPad.
Who are you kidding. Its Wii Fit for the cool kids.
It's pretty strange that the game developers still refuse to create controllers with build in Bluetooth but have no problems with doing one with the propriety Xbox protocol. I find it hard to believe the Bluetooth chip can really be expensive enough that it can be cheaper to actually build a separate dongle to ship along.
I think Bluetooth charges for royalties, so that can add up.
Bluetooth also uses more power than most proprietary wireless.
-Taylor
Would those royalties really add more to the cost of the package than this dongle does?
ps3 sucks, wii of ok for a week then it is a paper weight that collects dust.....
Thanks for sharing!
I doint get it. Does this mean, that they build their own I/O-Wireless-Dongle to port te game next year to xbox too? If it were only forever and ever for PS3 and Wii they would use Bluetooth, right?
Or... oh.... oh my f***ing GOD! Does a new Console-Challanger appears next year? Is it SEga? It is, right?! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! SEGA IS COMING BACK!!!!!
*rund around on towns marketsquare screaming*
I read this entire post 3 times and all I can think at the end is still "WAT?"
gosh!
looks like a maxipad.
Why does it need a dongle? Why can't it just do it via Bluetooth?
If they would just use Bluetooth, then one board would work for both consoles.
Maybe they just do not want to take a chance on someone using it on a PC...
PPTTHHH If it is going to be hacked, a USB dongle is not going to make it any harder.
That would be a pretty odd reason considering Microsoft sells a USB wireless adapter.
So I guess bluetooth is somehow unknown technology?
Too laggy.
Bluetooth requires a pairing process. That is not cool when you just want to pick up the game and play. Microsoft allows the controller to register as a controller without having to type in passwords and stuff like that. Dongles are just plug and play. Also, bluetooth is NOT an open standard. It is far from it.
I'm mostly looking forward to the videos of people hurting themselves on this thing.
It's not like anyone was going to buy this POS! Both Wii and PS3 have bluetooth built in and they decided not to use it. WTF!
Bluetooth requires a pairing process: Yes only once! I never had to re-sync my Wiimote or PS3 controllers.
Too laggy.: have you played a Wii or a PS3! I have never had any lag problems with my Wii or PS3!
This the only thing that makes any sense.
I think Bluetooth charges for royalties, so that can add up.
Bluetooth also uses more power than most proprietary wireless.

I HATE DONGLES!!!
Really, I have all my AV stuff (including my PS3) neatly stacked into place with no cables AT ALL visible.
It's really a shame that they didn't spend the extra time/effort/money to do it right...
And then they always need to make such bulgy dongles, I can't imaging they can't cram the same hardware into a nice small USB stick like the ones that ship with todays logitech mice/keyboards...
