Apple reconsiders rejected iPhone apps, C64 emulator on the way?
We're always a little hesitant to get too optimistic about changes to the App Store approval process, but it looks like there's been a few hopeful changes to the way things are done in the past few days, which could well lead to some previously rejected apps becoming available. Perhaps the most encouraging sign is that Apple seems to actually be going back through rejected apps and contacting develops to resubmit their app (without any changes, mind you) for an "expedited review." One such app is the Start Mobile Wallpaper Gallery, which was rejected for using Shepard Fairey's famous "HOPE" image of Barack Obama on the grounds that it "ridicules public figures." In other App Store news, the developer of the officially-licensed C64 emulator also says that it was contacted by a senior director at Apple, who reportedly said that there was "BIG news coming," but didn't elaborate any further. But, really, is there any news bigger than a C64 emulator?

Over/under on whiny comments about another Apple-related post?
This is the main reason why I dont have an iphone. Stupid Apple and their close systems! Open platforms with no limitations is where it's at!!! =)
......RIGHT, keep telling yourself that
(also, i am in no way a fanboy, i own 1 ipod, thats IT)

Random Capitalization fail ?
LOL lol lOl LoL loL!
nah, for somereason, the first time i wrote that, it didnt come up, waited 5 min, and the wrote it again
I think no system is perfect. Or what's the reason why Linux has not even a Marketshare of about 10% on desktop systems?
It's clear that the closed system on the iPhone takes the control away from me, but it works and that's what count! If I miss the train I want another connection instantly!
The app for our railway network is available for Pocket PC, Symbian, via Browser and for the iPhone. Even though the PPC and Symbian Version work offline they need longer than the iPhone version which works instantly!
I know it could be better on the other plattforms but it isn't and there are other apps which follow the same rule and that's where productivity is more important than freedom. And productivity seems is the big problem on open systems i think.
Anyone else find it funny that two opposite opinions are both low ranked?
Should be able to do it...had a C-64 emulator for my old Treo 650!
Willing to wait for C-64 on my Pre! (or, I could just dig out my C-64 from the garage!)
Use the emulator to run the emulator...
Oh man, all my disks seemed to stop working, wish I could crank up the ole machine!
whoopie-doo-da-day.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the last article?
YES! Phil Schiller is the man!
A Commodore 64 emulator! That would be awesome the C64c was my very first computer! Ahh, there is nothing cooler than sweet nostalgia!
Up to the point where you realise just how rubbish these games are nowadays.
@Mark, I don't think that's the reason why people go back and play these games. They do it for, as Eduardo said, the nostalgia feeling.
Yes. And after five seconds they realise just how rubbish they are.
Nostalgia's not what it used to be.
Really? Damn, I'm starting to feel nostalgic about what it used to be then.
@Mark Anderson:
"Yes. And after five seconds they realise just how rubbish they are."
No. You're just a cranky old bastard :)
Yup.
Now get off my lawn.
@Mark, I dunno, a couple years ago, after a couple hours of playing M.U.L.E. again, I remembered how thoroughly amazing that game was and still is. A few others that also hold up are Archon and Impossible Mission.
But my favorite of all, which regretfully no emulator will allow me to enjoy is Modem Wars. Ah, those fun times trying to connect with a friend through your telephone, your parents picking up the phone in the other room and yelling at you to get off the damn game.
True. However I am a grumpy old man and standards must be maintained.

"...is there any news bigger than a C64 emulator?"
Um, yeah, they announce approval of Google Voice app for iPhone.
I wish we could see an official SNES emulator makes its way over, but Nintendo would never allow it, unfortunately.
Wonder if the FCC made any difference in changing how Apple manages the App Store approval process...
C64 is for old people.
What's your point?
Raise your hand if you remember programming with sprites!!!
How about ASDR envelopes?
Those were some happy times, there.
Of course, I meant ADSR. Silly me.
Kevin, when I get thirsty while programming, I have a sprite too. Wicked.
Or rather, C64 is not for people whose balls have not yet dropped.
jmp $fce2 ; sys 64738, for shits & giggles
My point is....
Nothing, I just wanted to piss some slightly older people off :p
Oh!! Look what an FCC investigation will do for you!!
i bet macNN saw the "It's Coming" post and figured since engadget sucked apples dick that it was an ad for a new app
Now if I could just get a TI-99/4A emulator on the iPhone. Then I could dig out my old audio tapes and see if I can pull the old programs off of them, it would be like 1983 all over again I could really use a mobile MunchMan fix.
An Atari 800 emulator would be bigger news. M.U.L.E. over the net or bluetooth would be awesome.
C=64 had M.U.L.E. too. Don't worry it has everything you need.
BIG news, developer!
Apple are going to sue you for no real reason.
Wont happen.
I think I still have some C64 porn somewhere.... :)
I realize that there's a ton of fanboys who love the iPhone and bash everything else, and a ton of fanboys who bash the iPhone and love something else.
That being said, this is a perfect example of why having competition is good. I'd bet a large amount of money that the biggest factor in Apple's trying to be more open lately is the quality competition it's getting on all fronts- whether it's the Pre (for the interest of full disclosure, my preferred device, but that's really irrelevant) coming at it from one side, or Android devices like the HTC Hero, and so on and so forth.
They just can't afford anymore to lock things down so tightly and concede the openness point as freely to other platforms, and that's a good thing, again, no matter which phone you prefer.
+1 Joe, you and OneLove are the only comments on here I didn't waste my life reading :P

At least Boulder Dash is still available but it isn't any easier than on C64...
Maybe StyleTap will be able to resubmit their Palm OS emulator? Then I could replace my aging Palm Tungsten E2 with a brand new iPod Touch 3G (64GB) next month. If Apple approves a C64 emulator, then surely they can approve a Palm OS emulation app.
c64 + mule = kool (lol) and don't forget way of the exploding fist.
finally some productive stuff for the Iphone

He can resubmit it, as long as he does an Apple II emulator.
I will be shocked if Apple approves this for the iPhone. It won't matter who develops the emulator, Apple controls app that goes on the iPhone/iPod. Therefore, if this app is allowed, then Apple is agreeing that violation of copyright laws is ok. In essence, they will be setting a precendence that Apple does not have a problem with piracy. No problem with piracy, then they lose credibility in every case against Apple and them complaining about Apply clones.
I grew up with Commodore computers (from 1976 PET) and my father started one of the first computer clubs in Ohio and there is only a handful of apps/games for the C64 which were/owned by Commodore. Unfortuantely, C64's emu's are for pirating C64 games as none of the original license allow for duplication of the software. I doubt that the companies who still own the rights to those apps/games will appreciate Apple enabling people to illegally use their software.
Bummer, but there it is.
