Qik for iPhone 3GS update removes 'WiFi only' restriction, 3G streaming is a go
Well, that was fast. Just one week after hitting the scene, Qik for iPhone 3GS has been updated to move that nasty "WiFi only" restriction, meaning you can now stream your videos to the internet over a 3G network. We just tried it ourselves and, sure enough, it works like a charm. After you've read through all that FCC literature, hit up the read link and download the (thankfully still free) app -- just be careful how much fun you have with it this weekend. Let's see how AT&T's network handles this one. [Warning: iTunes app link.]

"WifFi"? "litearature"?
maybe you should stop writing stories bashing the pre and start spending your time looking for a good spell-checking app.
There are PLENTY of reasons to bash the Pre.
We keep hearing about that great spell checker built into OSX. We also know that the Engadget staff, by their own admission, only uses OSX.
I will let you fill in the rest...
OMG this is getting good it has to be fattening!!
Oh Apple!
Sling player debacle thrown back ....your move AT&T
get it before it's banned! lol
i wonder if once an app is installed, can apple go into your phone and delete it like amazon?
I love the irony of a Windows fanboy (WindowsFTW) pretending to know something about geeks. Though I guess helpdesk does count as a KIND of geek...
@UnixSystemsEngineer,
I wouldn't use the term 'fanboy'.
Fanboy is someone who rants and raves about something to the point where it is a reference to who they are. Like; "Say, do you know barry?" "Yeah! Is he the dude that NEVER shuts up about that thing he loves and you're gay if you have a competitor?" "Yeah that's him"
Though most of us are Window FANS. Different meaning Just thought I'd inform you, You don't want to go accidentally sparking a flamewar. No pun intended.
Errrr... Do geeks only use *nix ?
Yeah... the slingplayer thing still blows my mind.
Back to Qik. I would think as an approved App on the app store, Qik would have the common sense to remove the cydia link.
I don't think it's doing the live streaming though. :(
LOL FCC IS ALL UP IN THEY ASS NOW SO THERE MAKING CHANGES GOOD FOR U IPHONE USER LOVE MY G1 THOUGH ;p
Hell Yeah!!
Here's to the FCC laying da smacketh down on their candy asses!
"Well, that was fast."
Should have said: "Well, that was qik." How could you miss such an opportunity Ross Miller?
When you're right, you're right. Curses!
How 'bout skype, still wi-fi only?
GIVE IT TIME IM GOOD THING COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT FOR THE FCC
Trolling all over the comment stream! there goes WindowsFTW, there goes WindowsFTW
Barely capable of original thought! there goes WindowsFTW, there goes WindowsFTW
Angry at the world cause mommy was mean! there goes WindowsFTW

You know, you do for Microsoft what Paul A Chapel does for Apple.
@Cy Starkman
shhhh... it probably IS Paul A Chapel...
HAHAHA!
call me when its live streaming.
Symbian just owns in terms of "serious" applications, or should i say applications that do more than fart.
:D the iPhone OS is too much of a teeny OS amo.. in terms of application availability (not the numbers but the types..)
WindowsFTW: Ah ha ha hah... "The apps are a joke." You often say that sort of thing, but the important thing you miss is that there are thousands of GREAT apps that people find and use. It doesn't matter how many fart apps there are, because those only seem to confuse/dazzle/glamor people like you about the functionality of the AppStore. It's not a problem to avoid typing 'fart' in the search field, my friend.
Keep it up with that straw-man argument. We see right through you.
Those links only show how the AppStore system is improving by weeding out useless devs.
And creepinshadow? Symbian? Maybe 5 years ago. But that isn't where it's happening now. Symbian is dead. Expect a rebranding and relaunch.
Fact is, most people outisde of the geek world really don't care.
doesn't seem to stream live, just uploads after the clip is done recording. the cydia store version does actual live streaming over 3g
Excellent, will check out Cydia then. This app doesn't stream, unless I'm missing something?
Doh, just worked out what Cydia is... :-(
Why is everyone touting this product as streaming when it clearly isn't?
The official version streams live on Android.
This app does NOT stream over 3G or wifi. It will only record offline and then upload. I'll stick with the cydia version.
Agreed... I see no way to stream with this app. Did Engadget get an early copy, perhaps?
Yea it still cant stream live like android can.... this is the reason Ill never go apple, they give u this but you pay for that...
Look..
I have an iPhone and a G1.
Both phones have their pros and cons.
However I will still say the iPhone is one of the best phones I have ever owned.
Having owned numerous PDA phones in the past and comparing them. The iPhone has the best polish of any interface.
The G1 is sometimes sluggish just scrolling the application list or call list.
This is something I never saw on the iPhone.
The G1 has a physical keyboard that I can actually say I now prefer to touch screen keyboards.
If it weren't for the fact that I grew tired of waiting for a known good jailbreak/unlock then updating/unlocking/jail-breaking only to find another iPhone update was coming out a month or two later. Id still be toting my iphone. (That and 3G I have a 1st Gen iPhone).
So stop calling people that have iPhones Apple fan boys. People have preferences.
I am a geek. I am a software engineer that studied electrical engineering for heavens sake.
I like to tinker and hack.
I am no "idiot".
The iPhone for me has a great interface and quite honestly look wonderful.
I don't think anyone can slam ANY phone until they have actually used one for more than 2 weeks.
(Even if the Palm Pre doesn't look inviting to me. I'm NOT slamming it)
Maybe one day the Android OS will appeal to me in the same manner.
For now I'm happy that I can code a JAVA app for my phone over night and share it with friends without having to put it on the app store.
BeDammit
I'm not happy about missing call waiting beeps on the G1
Android has great potential... but the G1 was, well, not the greatest start imo. I love the keyboard, but the lag is annoying, it has very little memory... and the battery life (ESPECIALLY if you don't have signal, My phone literally goes from 100% to 20-30% in 4-6 hours without signal... at which point I just turn it off or plug it into my work PC), but as the Android OS improves, better phones will be released. Improving on the look and feel of Android, like the HTC Hero UI for example... I really wish I could get that on my G1.
Admittedly, I am a "geek" but for some odd reason, I don't seem to care about Apple's restrictions and their obvious tied to AT&T. Yes, I can't watch SlingPlayer over 3G, but at least my 3G network isn't crashing and failing everywhere I use my iPhone. AT&T's network is currently large, fast, and pathetic all at the same time. Large and fast because of good coverage and good amount of 3G coverage, and pathetic because of the semi-weekly data outages and overly congested network. Most of these data intensive apps shouldn't even be allowed to use 3G while AT&T slowly improves their infrastructure in fear of another blackout.
Second of all, how many of you actually have GV invites (as it is a private and invite only beta) and how many of you actually use SlingPlayer? Several of you might say "I do", but in reality, you and other would be users of these apps account for a very very tiny percentage of overall iPhone users. It's always the tiny groups that complain and blow stupid things like this way out of proportion. I don't get why people continue to bitch about the AppStore approval process when most of you agreed to it when you decided to use the AppStore in the first place. If you don't like it, go to Android. The AppStore has always been this way, closed and controlled but still a great service to anyone who uses an Apple device. I for one am very pleased with my iPhone and the AppStore. It's very rare that you won't find a quality and useful app in a certain category that you are looking into. So we don't get google voice (pointless if you consider you have to pay $70+ every month to AT&T to use voice and data and then download an application that would wind up using your carriers network anyway. Free texting on GV is awesome, but you can also use AIM or Skype for that).
I have GV and then got two invites. I sent one and the other is just sitting there as I am pondering what lucky friend would get it.
Im sure there are many more GV users that you anticipate considering it was Grandcentral before.
@chris.ricc
The point is not about app store , why is Apple restricting users to app store and not allowing installation through other sources? such as Android, Winmo, symbian etc does? if they do , why the hell everybody would care about app store let them sell what they like....its their store.
Nice its amazing what a good bitch slapping from the FCC can do
What's the mater DS, your comments recently make good, good sense?
Where's the old DS and what have you done with him?
seems to have been pulled from the App Store?????
Guys...NO LIVE STREAMING !!! what's with the MISLEADING HEADLINE?????
Wait... the Apple version still doesn't allow you to do the main thing you actually use Qik for?
I mean you can upload video to a number of providers over 3G and WiFi already so exactly what does this mean?
Fuck all. That's what.
Uh, this doesn't allow live streaming it just allows you to upload videos you already recorded over 3g and wifi. Still no live streaming, come on engadget you guys know the difference between a live stream and an upload right?
FAIL
Ross Miller fail/
All of you have a point, though.
omg biggest let down this month. deceptive title fail.
qik ass!
I never spent a dime with Apple for anything.
And wouldn't start if they were the only cell phone option in the whole world.
They block use of some of the best apps ever created (IMHO, SKype and various MEDIA extensions for streaming internet radio ).
Same people who vote for Obama are probably the same sheep who love being controlled by the ATT/Apple (screw developers who don't follow the model).
