Walmart recalls 1.5 million flammable Durabrand DVD players
Remember those amazingly cheap doovde players Walmart was so proud of a couple years back? Well, they ain't so amazing anymore, unless that's what you'd call a device capable of spontaneously bursting into flames. Sold between January 2006 and July 2009 exclusively at Walmart stores in the US and ASDA supermarkets in the UK, the explosive Durabrand units are being called back due to 12 reported instances of overheating, including five that caused fires. You have to love the irony of skimping on a doovde player purchase, only to pay for it later with "enhanced" insurance premiums. We reached out to Walmart for comment, but they didn't know what a doovde was. Nevertheless, we captured the conversation after the break.
Update: While we haven't yet got clear confirmation that ASDA is following suit, we'd be very surprised to not see the product pulled and returns honored in the UK in the same fashion as in the US.

that is cool. I have one of these and lost the remote so it is collecting dust...I guess thankfully. I could use my money back from it. woohoo for product recalls.
same here, time to go to wal-mart and get myself a stimulus check. Leave it to Wal-Mart to do what the government can't and give the money to the people.
Outstanding Phonejacker references there.
You win Internets, Mr Savov .
He should of gone to Puk World.
I guess it is not exactly durable. Also, flammable too....
In the words of the Go Gos:
Is this product an eternal flaaaame?
+1 for durable reference.
I just read the headline then looked for this witty jibe
@Strider,
Errr, wasn't that the Bangels?
LMAO, my thats one funny video!
"Durabrand"
Formerly "Flamesmor", "SmoulderCo", and "Singetronics LTD".
Durabland?
i´m still waiting that apple will recall the 13" macbook pro. because sometimes when i play games in windows, i think that it will start burning or that it switches off itself...
I can't see where it says they are recalled in the UK too?
Walmart bikes are shoddy.
you can pretty much replace the word "bikes" with anything and it's still true
I should be ok, I play my Doovde on my PUSS 3
Me too! On my JurVCur LurCurDee TurVe ready for the HuD.
was in fits of laughter watching the first series.
Goooooooodafternooon Sa..... I'm calling from your Bank!!
Outstanding use of fonejacker
Oh, wait. This wasn't a Durabrand, it was a Duraflame!
I know a company who bid to manufacture this. They lost out by $0.50, which is pretty much the difference between a reliable and a flammable PSU in a Chinese DVD factory. Wal-mart is all about price.
LOL, this is why I never buy the super cheap stuff. If the item is dirt cheap, there is something wrong with it!
Fonejacker. I approve your taste, Vlad. :)
Oh those wacky Chinese and their exploding products.
i just p2p'd my pants while listening to the vid
I think the only device that didn't burst out in fire so far is the kindle.
*yet
They're obviously spending way too much money on product design.
See, it's funny because "brand" is a mark made by burning!
Wow, the dirt-cheap crap from Wal-Mart is poorly designed and poorly tested! I'd *never* have guessed that...
Come on baby light my fire :) ...wait..oh shitz, my DVD playa!
Thats what you get for going to walmart. Dont they sell other crap that explodes, Oh yea, the iphone. LOLZ
This is what came to my mind: http://www.duraflame.com
Three years to determine you need a recall. That is some first rate product testing right there. Time to hire some new testers.
Their job is to apply the formula.
Take the number of dvd players in the field (A), multiply it by the probable rate of failure (B), then multiply the result by the average out-of-court settlement (C). A times B times C equals X...
If X is less that the cost of a recall, they don't do one.
So they screwed up a basic formula for 3 years?
Or it was cheaper to pay the people off until the failure rate got to a certain point.
Exactly, they got the failure rate wrong which means they screwed up the formula. Took them 3 years to finally figure out the correct failure rate. If they knew ahead of time they would have pulled the product off the shelf and fixed it then put it back up for sale again totally avoiding a recall or settlements and saving money.
how did nobody catch that reference?
i wouldnt be surprise if they were made in China..
Built To Last, Duralast!!!
wait...what?
What the heck is a "Doovde" player? How is that even pronounced?
hahahahahaa. watch the video mang. it'll all become clear.
Well what in the hell did you expect from a 59cent piece of Chinese crap.
Are you sure it's fair to call it "explosive"?
I can't believe mine never caught on fire. I left Futurama and ATHF running all night on that thing for years.
One good thing is that I can take it back, get $30 bucks, and now their Blu-ray player will only cost me $70.
Bingo
Funny, seems like there have been just as many (if not more) iPod overheating/fire incidents yet no recalls from Apple....
A very elegant and skilled doovde reference indeed.
