Lackluster Gmail support has been a real pain point for BlackBerry users, and we've really been hoping that this new "
Enhanced Gmail Plug-in" would solve all that. It's out as of today, and we've certainly gotten some improvements, like support for archiving messages, marking spam and managing labels / stars. Unfortunately, these new management features are only live synced one way, from the phone to the Gmail server, so many of the actions that take place desktop side won't be reflected on the phone once that particular message has been picked up by the BlackBerry Internet Service. There's also the small problem of installing the thing: we haven't been successful so far on two different BlackBerries, and you have to make sure to uninstall the existing Gmail Plug-in. Meanwhile, in BlackBerry Enterprise Server land, the Google Apps Connector has now gone live, which means Google Apps users get push Gmail and what seems to be much tighter Exchange-style syncing. Let us know if you get either of these things working with your particular setup.

Oh yes, you can compose too
You could compose without it. It's pretty much useless though. i installed it and quickly got rid of it since it requires you to keep the Gmail icon on your screen, it doesn't work with the native BlackBerry messages folder, and I like to use the messages folder for all my email instead of having individual icons for each service. Nice try though.
It definitely does not require you to keep the gmail icon, I don't even have the program installed and it works fine. Also, it does work with the native messaging application, as that's exactly how i'm using it.
Sounds like its too much trouble to bother with. The older gmail app works fine for what I need.
BIIIIISOOOOOOOOOOOON!
I tried to install this on a 83X series BB. After 5 minutes of fighting with it, I consulted a witch doctor, 3 midgets and slaughtered a whole horde of rabbits for luck.... and still no luck. Anybody else doing any better installing this plugin??
Update: Yeah this plugin really is junk. If the idea behind this was create more icons to check and make the BB more cumbersome, then mission accomplished.
Installed it on my Curve without a hiccup. Delete your old account in your BIS and add it again and it emails you the link to pick it up. I like it a lot. My favorite part is it's integrating searching gmail without using the gmail program. I can now just use the messaging app for everything.
are you kidding me? login to your BIS account, delete your existing gmail account, and create the same account over again. you will be pushed an email with the link to install the enhanced plug-in, follow the link, install and you're done. it doesn't matter what icon you use to access the email function of your phone - it works. this couldn't be more simple.
Um...definitely could be more simple.
installed without any problems on a storm. went to blackberry.com/gmail and the rest was easy (as far as download and installing) removed my old gmail account, and set it right back up made all the new features available. no problems here.
Nice, I just got a blackberry.
How is it? I'm actually thinking about getting a BlackBerry, I heard that they are best for email, & at the AT&T store their cameras were amazing, but I'm really concerned about the web browser.
Third party browsers are your friend. BOLT is pretty amazing.
Installed fine on a Bold, following the delete/re-add instructions.
Yes you can use it from the main message application, but from what I can see the Star/Archive feature is available only if you use the separate icon.
I also cannot get any of the Star/Archive/etc... commands in the main, combined messages folder. I can only get those commands from inside the gmail folder. Lame, because I also like to combine all of my accounts in the main messages folder.
Can't get this working on my verizon tour. Even called up verizon tech support and in the end wasn't able to get it up and running. I kept getting a message saying I needed to enable IMAP for all mail (which it was enabled) and to validate my account (which I did) still nothing oh well, Gmail app is my friend still.
Direct IMAP support. RIM needs it.
(Yes, I am commenting because this continues to annoy the hell out of me.)
+1 man it really is unbelievably annoying. from what it seems like though, that type of support came to BES users that have Google Apps. Frustrating because i have google apps for education but BIS so i don't get it
I agree with Nilay. RIM needs a real IMAP client. It really shouldn't be that difficult, everyone one else has one
Computer science/MIS students with MSDNAA access can set up an exchange server (I'm sure most of them have the equipment required.) BES is free for environments with a small number of users (I think it's 1 but don't quote me.) Back in my blackberry days, this is the solution I used.
The third party browsers may be "amazing" if you have only ever used the built in browser but otherwise they still suck.
opera mini is the fatest browser ever.
For RSS news and such it's amazing.
For video/flash just stop saying crap about what you don't know and get back to real life : real flash support does not exist on mobile web browser for now.
I agree that safari is a better browser than opera mini in terms of performances and capabilities, but given my use of mobile internet browser (i.e. RSS + wikipedia + allocine or such) it's perfect AND faster.
For the rest there are dedicated apps.

Does this fix the problem of copying all emails sent as new incoming mail?
You can just log into your account on your service provider's website and there are options to not send emails from certain addresses to your blackberry. Do this with your own email address and that fixes the problem.
Except that sometimes I actually do want to send myself things - (ie easily transferring files via gmail from home to work/school computers, or even to my blackberry) - so this fix doesn't work. (I appreciate the try though)
With the Gmail app I'm not sure I want this since my company pays for and probably monitors the BB. Really who uses a BB unless they have to, hell I would prefer other phones such as Android based, iPhone or Pre.
well lots of people uses BB even without having been forced to. One main reason being Bold/storm were released long before any decent Android phone or the Pre...
iPhone.... lol.
Only working here with the gmail account icon on VZW Tour
Working fine for me. My main complaint is the same that I have about the gmail app. It seems to be much much slower than the standard BB message client. Emails are now taking several minutes to show up on my device whereas with the default BB client they generally show up on the device before they do in the browser, within seconds of the email being sent. At least with the gmail app I have the option to refresh. This is a big pain in the ass. RIM really needs to fix their terrible IMAP support.
Not worth it IMO. The fact that it doesn't have 2 way sync and doesn't offer the Label/Archive/etx, features in the main BB Messages app is a deal breaker. RIM really needs to get with the program.
Not sure why everyone is deleting their GMail first, I downloaded, resent service books, done and done. Worked fine. However, all the other gripes are spot on. Doesn't work in Messages App. Anyone who says other wise doesn't know the difference between Messages and the individual Mail Accounts. This promised big improvements and delivered nothing. They'll get it right someday.
installed it on my curve 8900 and now i am not even receiving my emails!! sent service books, validated email .. tried pretty much everything! anyone have this problem? Whats going on?
Installed on my Tour and it crashed with a 522 after rebooting....while I was at Six Flags.
Finally got it restored this morning, but of course my laptop is out having its motherboard replaced and my dad's computer (which I'm using for the time being) doesn't have any of my backups on it, so I have none of my contacts for another week
That's going to be downloaded soon.
Google will take over the world.
Can anyone post a screenshot? Looks like it doesn't like the OS 5.0 on my bold... I removed my account and installed it again. Then tried to download it from the link I received, but It doesn't let me install it.
2 complaints: For one, when you archive an email in the gmail message folder, it deletes it from the folder but the emails are still on the device under the main message app. Second, when you send an email from the gmail icon, it does not show the message anymore once it's sent. In order to see the email, you have to go to the main message app icon. POS.
