Lucky Mac mini buyer got Snow Leopard disc in the box?
If his story is to be believed (and it seems pretty believable), an anonymous tipster to Engadget Japanese got a nice surprise with his recent Mac mini purchase: a Snow Leopard install disc. It's one of those vanilla hardware-specific install discs, dubbing itself Mac OS version 10.6, and clearly packing the goods if the screenshots don't lie. This only adds confusion to the ship date, which has been listed as August 28th on Apple's online store, dubbed as "September" elsewhere, and obviously been totally disregarded in this specific case. No matter what, it looks like we won't have long to wait. Hit up the read link for a couple of Japanese-infused screencaps.

Optical media still exists?
So you Windows fanboy just got a PC with a "Recovery DVD" stored somewhere on your harddrive and now are jealousy of us Mac users?
I get my PC's and laptops from HP.
I always get the recovery disk free in the mail
My Dell came with an Ubuntu 7.10 install disc :D only reason I got it.
That said, it's best to install from USB, imo. ..but Macs just can't boot BIOS dependent operating systems over USB it seems.
Well I, for one, buy my operating systems seperate, and build my own computers, so its no issue for me.
@ethana
wrong. I installed Leopard on my Macbook with a USB stick.
@scott
Leopard is not BIOS dependent.
LOL @ seric
you sure have some sort of inferiority complex going on. he was just saying, not against apple or anyone xD
You can actually boot even from an SD card in the new MacBook Pros
ethana2:
You got a Dell laptop just for the Ubuntu installation CD?
sad...
i like how it was taken with a white iphone...just saying
@ Quantumphysics
How do you do that? is there an option somewhere?
How well do Apple computers sell in Japan??
Well they use same Mac vs PC ads in Japan, Just different actors
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-3MtYn9W5w
well they are popular there..they like their designs but brands are generally popular there ... i think its the most popular western computer brand there since they have their own brands with quite fancy and/or stylish types we don't have here (I'm not talking about that hello kitty stuff we all don't undestand, why they like it). but generally iPods are very popular with young people
At Eight
Not very then.
Is it racist that I think those two actors look pretty much the same except for their outfits?
@ Drew Green
No more or less racist than saying "looking at an average group of white americans on a beach and picking out 'the skinny one' is like trying to do the same in your typical pack of elephant seals."
Macs are very popular in Japan and sell quite well.
If they're made somewhere in Asia, it would make sense for discs to show up there first.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the Harvard School of Business presents you your class of 2009.
*facepalm
Which almost made up for the disappointment of getting a Mac Mini.
Douche.
bag.
:)
Take comments like that with a pinch of salt yourbrokenamp & Chris Are.
lol
People will down rank you for your opinion.
How child like.
Oh it doesn't really bother me what a bunch of 14 year old emo self harmers think.
Especially when they don't have a sense of humour.
:)
Haha oh mark anderson. How sad, just because someone disagrees with you and calls you a douche you think they're a 14 year old emo kid. Because you're so great that no adult that is wise would dare disagree with you? Man, you MS fanboys are arrogant.
These comments were typed on my Macbook, emo kid.
Now put down the razor, wipe off the eyeliner and try to get a life.
All fanboys are arrogant
lucky guy. i wish they would just figure out with build number the gold masters is.
Build No? "The build number is the report I tell you to wait and install it." is fairly ambiguous.
Heeheehee. I love Google Translate:
"Mac's new ship is reported to have arrived accidentally attached to the body. I bought the Apple Store in Japan on a Mac mini installation disk that came with it."
Sun began shipping in August 28 I? Purported upcoming Mac OS X Snow Leopard, but Mac shipments are reported new cases received accidentally included with the console. On the Apple Store in Japan bought a Mac mini that came with the installation disk. Version 10.6, or Snow Leopard has.
According to the person who bought the anonymous tip, arrived the day before August 20. "The test is 10.6 I want to put mind to, I will later revert to 10.5 or I?" From pastoral counseling and a bit, 2ch thread is the original festival (feeling of) is state. (Direct link not cause such a sudden discharge does not, you will find now been reported for other areas of the board's time). DVD screens are installed on the inside and more. Other build number waiting to report the story I've installed.
(Thank you for providing information)
My favorite line:
"From pastoral counseling and a bit, 2ch thread is the original festival (feeling of) is state"
It doesn't look right. It just doesn't look right.
Just been playing with Photoshop and I'm quite certain that it's a fake. :)
Ah sod it, gotta take lens curvature into account.
WTF mac mini? Is this anything like those mini Mcdonald burgers?
Ohhhhhhhh dear someone at apples going to get tortured then kill them selves, look out everyone!!
Wow. Bad taste.
Too soon, man, too soon...
The background is for Leopard (10.5). The background for Snow Leopard got released a while ago, and is not displayed.
Well, he hasn't installed it yet...
The picture looks to be the install screen, so it would be the machine running leopard, not snow leopard.
I just love the Google translated headline:
"Apple, Snow Leopard's ship flying a DVD?"
Surely, its ship can't be flying a DVD?
Flying surely a dvd ships can't it!
I am sick of you Apple-haters not believing that Apple can have its ship flying a DVD!
GROW UP!
Perhaps the pirate bay has now moved to hosting at sea and is flying a new flag?
Interesting build number, since 435 is the dev seed floating around, and there are rumours of 465 (I think it was 465) with the social feature added to Address Book...how exciting- wish it was here already :(
I don't see the build number anywhere there.
I don't believe the rumours about build 435. I don't see it on ADC, neither do several other professional developers I know. The mockups of the social networking features seem fake, and it's unusual for Apple to let developers test an AddressBook with Exchange support but leave out social networking. If they're going to let them test the new AddressBook, they're going to let them test it with all the bells and whistles.
People often like to dramatise Apple's secrecy. They only keep the important stuff secret, and social networking support in the OS doesn't fit that bill.
432 is the dev seed I thought.
"(Direct link not cause such a sudden discharge does not, you will find now been reported for other areas of the board's time)"
I always knew the Japanese had some weird fetishes, but... Ew.
Just looking at the picture, the .6 in the 10.6 doesn't match up to the font on the rest of the disk. The period is lighter and kind of messed up and the 6 doesnt look like the other 6's. Yes I know it could have been a printing issue, but everything else on the disk looks crisp except the .6.
He could of flipped the 9 in 2009?
You are very right..... I call a fake!
I put in my order for an "Up To Date" copy for my recently purchased Mac mini. You can get Snow Leopard for $10 shipped if you purchased your Mac on or after June 8th:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/
my system is qualified but nothing in cart?
Didn't something like this happen awhile ago with MobileMe or something? I customer got it early but since he posted it, it received a bit of attention and Apple requested whatever he got early to be returned and Apple gave the customer free stuff? I'd expect something similar to happen if this person really does have a 10.6 install disc.
Mac Mini is still around?!
I just had to check the backup disc I got with my mac considering it was just delivered yesterday after being shipped on wednesday. It is not Snow Leopard sadly.
Well, that's because Snow Leopard hasn't been released yet.
=]
Wow, the Apple Store's been a mess lately.
First, they accidentally put up the first generation iPod up for sale. Then they list Snow Leopard as shipping on August 28th, then September, then August 28th, then charge the credit cards of the "Up-To-Date Program" buyers, then refund SOME of them, and don't refund others, instead, telling them that Snow Leopard will ship overnight.
And now someone got Snow Leopard with their new Mac.
What the hell Apple, pull it together.
Most of what you said was wrong.
The 6 in "10.6" looks like it's marginally smaller than the other digits.
Maybe I'm not seeing it right but it definitely looks a bit fishy.
Look at the Engadget japan link....its got screenshots...yet its still not entirely proof.
kinda makes sense if you think about it, in the same manner that 7 will be RTM'd before you can buy a retail disk
There is just no way this happened.
I buy a lot of Apple machines, and unfortunately far too many are purchased soon after the release of a new OS X. It typically takes at least a month before the machine specific discs are included (to be fair, there is nothing specific about them other than a hardware id check in the installer). I'd always get "CPU Drop-in" discs for the first several weeks after a major OS X release.
good translated comment ....
"I wonder why you bad comments like this head.
Elementary school and you?"
The World Wildlife Foundation plans to investigate.
I'm pretty sure it's a fake. If you click the read link, the "Install Mac OS X" icon has a picture of a snow leopard on it, when Apple's official disc looks like this: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC204Z/A.
That icon was in the latest seed. There were also pics leaked of the packaging which looked the same.
The install DVDs shipped with Macs are always gray.
this is one lucky broseph
Sorry, but HP requires you make your own disc or buy a recovery disc. We do not give free disc's.
And apparently, apart from not giving free "disc's", you decided to swap plural form and possessive form. Reminds me why I don't buy HP machines.
(Writes something negative about Apple and it's mother to get low ranked.)
Anyone else see the "posted by:" I liked how Ryan Block is writing articles for Engadget Japanese....
Yah I wouldn't have noticed this until someone mentioned the "six" on the 10.6. If you look closely you'll notice the tail of the number smaller and touched up funny because there are some blurrage.
The funny thing is they had plenty of 6's in the few lines below.... if it was a photoshopped I don't understand why they couldn't have done this easily.
According to Apple, the latest Mac Mini Disc Numbers are:
