Video: Robot hand shows off amazing dexterity, speed
So you want something to look forward to in your fast approaching old age, eh? If robots playing baseball doesn't quite cut it, how's about a robohand that redefines what we understand by the word "dexterity"? The Ishikawa Komuro Laboratory is at it again, this time demonstrating robotic appendages with a reaction time of a single millisecond. Using harmonic drive gears and a (really) high-speed actuator, the three-fingered hands can tie your shoelaces, tweezer your brow, and even perform some kung fu pen spinning for the ladies. Video after the break -- skip ahead if you must, but don't miss out on the slow-mo action at 2:40 in the demo, it's pure kinetic poetry.

But can it pour me a drink?
of course, it can not only pour you a drink, it can make you one!
it can accurately spray every single drop into your mouth, nose and elsewhere..
Well then, 2 enthusiastic thumbs up!
that title is just not right...
"of course, it can not only pour you a drink, it can make you [into] one!"
Fix't
Yep just in time for 2011 just like John Connor said! I got my liquid Nitrogen tank ready. Do you!?
Is it me, or did anyone else find this video terribly frightening?
I usually throw all the comments about robot over lords and such out, but idk this video REALLY scared me! That hand is amazing and the things that it could do with a small amount of A.I. Robots of the future and gonna really really kick our ass!
I DID!
When it tied that knot all I could think of was a noose
it needs delicate hands so it can skin humans perfectly... we're all going to get minced neatly by these robots!
Imagine if someone loaded with a program to throw knifes at anything that moves and to hit the vital spots on human bodys
The killer robots of the future are gonna be fast. Real fast. And they won't need strategic AI, just awesomely fast killer movements. We won't stand a chance. Hopefully they'll want to keep some of us alive, even if just as pets.
We're dead. We're Soooooo dead.
It's not the robots themselves that scare me but it's about the people who will control them in the future. The robots of the future will be controlled by the same people: 2% of the world's population owns 50% of the world's wealth. That's what is scary.
Zoey: Game over man, game over...
Yeah.
But when I can get my arm replaced with one of these, I will.
It'll bring the stranger to a whole new level
i was about to post the exact same thing.
We won't even see it coming,
People talk about the coming robot wars. There ain't going to be no war. War suggests a series of battles between matched foes. It will be more like an afternoons sport, sport as in shooting clay targets with a minigun, humans being the clay targets.
yeah, we're fuckin' doomed. i'm gonna start building my underground shelter now...

:-)
But can it give me a hand job?
Lol.
Yes. Only one problem: you'll still finish first.
Brought to you by Apple: The iJob.
I hope they don't invent a robotic penis. I'll never see my wife again.
Upon second thought....
Well it was able to pick up that grain of rice, so its used to touching small things
Next up, will it blend?
Fantastic performance. It's about time someone got beyond stacking cups and identifying colored balls.
this awesome!
just make sure you let humans play against other humans in sports now, ok? just make a separate robot league or somehing :) all for fair competition!
.......... were boned........
More like "fingered".
I WANT ONE.
I don't know what I'd use it for (apart from moving grains of rice), but I'm pretty sure I still need one.
You'd never have to replace your phone, because you'd never drop it.
That is by far the coolest, and most pointless thing I have ever seen...
What about the iPhone?
That make me laugh! xD
Dear god, we give the the ability to lie, run on flesh, and now this. Sooner or later they will figure out that they dont need us.
If this is what some lab in Japan has got, DARPA must have a full working robot man by now.
Skynet Online
AMAZINGG...simply amazing
this is a quite fascinating robot that could have many capabilities in a factory where things need to be done precisely, fast, and accurately. This is some technology i would like people to take advantage of and use, unlike the lying robot technology.
Very impressive and scary at the same time.
I won't be impressed until it can deal a deck of cards and play poker with its human friends.
I won't be impressed until it can deal a deck of cards and cheat while playing poker with its human slaves
There, I fixed it for you.
It will pull cards out of its sleeves in front of your eyes so fast, you won't be able to see it.
god dammit now i have to start stocking up of food and weapons to combat the smart robots, or at least until they give it a brain
worse than that is the fact that it will almost surely be used by a 'brainless' politician to do nasty things around the world without actually deploying human soldiers. think robot mercenarys!!!
now it just needs to learn how to clean my house.
until it realizes it can eliminate the mess by eliminating the mess maker
my kids?
