Apple enlists David Puddy to take on the Laptop Hunters
Apple's created a whole new chapter in its "Get a Mac" ad campaign based on targeting Microsoft's successful Laptop Hunters series, and while at this point it's just a lot of muddled back-and-forth, the gang in Cupertino managed to spice things up a little by bringing in an all-too-recognizable face and voice: Patrick "David Puddy" Warburton. Mr. Brock Samson / Joe Swanson / The Tick comes on as the top-of-the-line PC who some say has a "much too fast" processor but prone to viruses and causing headaches -- you knew were the narrative was going. Video after the break, and you can go ahead and start work on your parody video, "You got a question about PCs, you ask the eight ball."

Evil Mac! You face THE TICK! SPOON!
hah! what a clever response to those stupid laptop hunter ads. +1 apple
*YAWN*
WINDOWS7RULEZ!!!
.
thanks for making Windows fans look like total tools.
it's not that hard...*rimshot*
Yeah... usually they're able to cover that up.
Come on, Apple. These ads are just as desperate and obnoxious as Microsoft's. If you're gonna keep using the Mac guy and the PC guy, at least talk about OS X's features instead of repeating the same shit over and over again.
Most of the computer buying consumer base won't understand anything beyond that Macs are less susceptible to viruses and that "it just works" and that PCs cost less.
Wow finally someone who shares my opinion with this debate. Maybe their is a brighter future ahead after all.
im a pc. srsly. obey!
It's interesting if you watch the older ads and then watch the newer ones, they go from being informative about macs features, to just cracking on pc, to not really saying anything
Maybe people stopped listening...
I KNOW! Christ... Its like they don't want to sell anymore computers, just make the current users feel better.
Brock!
He'll break your hand with his ass cheeks. HAHA!
I heart Venture Bros....
I haven't had a single virus with Vista, and never got one on XP because I'm not stupid and open attachments from the prince in Africa wanting my credit card number.
Hackers' goals are to actually get a high volume of people to infected with their virus. Therefore, they are not going to spend their time writing them for the Mac. Mac don't have viruses because hackers don't care about them enough.
>> "Hackers' goals are to actually get a high volume of people to infected with their virus. Therefore, they are not going to spend their time writing them for the Mac. Mac don't have viruses because hackers don't care about them enough."
Kinda proves Apple point... right?
Anyway... I've never gotten a Virus on Windows either. BUT... I have spent tons of time (and made lots of money) cleaning crap out of other people's Windows computers. Not just viruses... but spyware and other stuff than happens to infect only Windows computers. They wonder why their computer is running slow... but there are 17 things running in the system tray. Kodak EasyShare software? They don't even have that camera anymore!!!
So, while the average Engadget reader has never gotten a virus or spyware... lots of other people have.
"Hackers' goals are to actually get a high volume of people to infected with their virus. Therefore, they are not going to spend their time writing them for the Mac. Mac don't have viruses because hackers don't care about them enough."
Somebody should write a widespread virus for Mac. Then people will care about them and these ads will be considered false
Perhaps Apple could hire some programmers to develop a virus if no one would write one for free.
If you have EVER gotten a virus on a PC, you deserve it. the days of viruses spontaneously popping up on a PC are in the distant past. YOU have to infect your system. as far as hacking and virus makers go. hehem....*Michael Scrip*... was it in Apples plan to be a 3.36% market share? thats the only reason there are only a few viruses for the mac. that is the only reason. if they open their software to allow all manufacturers, they will start form scratch in the viri world. and i mean like 3.11 days.
M$ can still learn a lot from Apple. dont get me wrong. marketing and UI are key to a good OS. as far as all the morons that say that macs are made so much better, whats the model of laptop that M$ makes? oh yeah, thats right they have never made one...ever. dont compare apples to dells. compare apples to apples. (pun intended). the reason M$ never made a PC is because its too much over head. im sure they wanted to but where are the profit margins. unless you turn into a mac your never going to see them... whats better from a business point of view. sell an OS on a disk that costs 25 cents and charge $400. or sell a laptop that costs $1000 for $1299. its a very easy decision. you will sell ten times more of the cheaper product. meanwhile all the pc manufactures have to pay you for the OEM copys. and guess what. we were the ones that made M$ what it is. we always had a choice.
the world is a PC
and so am I
P.S. - i love my iPhone! and i love macs. but dont make excuses for them and dont lie about PC's. each belong in their rightful place. mac= fisher price, easy to use and pretty but you cant do much with them pc=erector set. not as pretty(except win7) but you can do whatever you want on it..... even destroy it if your so inclined, or the slow kid.
@ ThatOneKid
they have. apple just dosnt talk about it....
OSX.Trojan.iServices.A Trojan Horse
OSX/Inqtana.A
Oompa-Loompa, OSX/Oomp-A, Leap.A, CME-4, MacOS/Leap, MacOS/Leap!tgz, OSX.Leap.A, OSX/Leap
Melissa.W
Mac.Simpson Virus
FOX-HOUND ZERO
among others.
and just cuz its funny.......lol..... yeah macs cant get viruses. just ask their users.... on APPLES OWN FORUMS!!!!!

you nerds might be tired of these ads, but look at the numbers. since apple started running these ads, their sales have gone up every quarter. they won't change a thing, bc everything is going perfectly for them.
The only reason Mac's "don't" have viruses is because nobody gives half a shit to code them. Any electronic that runs off of code can have code that works against it introduced into its environment. I'm sick of this misnomer, isn't it illegal to explicitly lie in public advertising?
not in America!
Does it really matter what the reason is? There still are none in the wild for OS X... so how is it a lie to say that there are no viruses on the Mac?
In America, the lawsuit is the driving mechanism behind a lot of safety and other ethical standards with companies.
But they air these ads in Canada too =(
In Soviet Russia, ethics drive lawsuits.
The worst thing about it is that if these ads work and Macs increase their market share significantly, people will start to write more viruses just for Macs. And the built in anti-virus software is just not up to snuff.
Viruses for All!
its not lying because they said thousands of viruses, so far i've only heard of like 3 viruses/trojans/bad stuff for macs.
First of all, the answer would be no; look at 99% of ads out there. They all lie. Second of all, even if this security via obscurity hypothesis were true (which is debatable), it, at least at this point, does not negate the fact that there has not been a single virus out in the wild for Macs in over a decade, while viruses for Windows, yes, even for Vista, are as common today as ever (although I will admit, Vista is much less susceptible to them than prior Win OSes). Which makes Apple's claim TRUE.
@rawhead
Wow, you may be a ravid fanboy or a completely gullible. I'm not sure which. Do you really believe that statement you wrote? "there has not been a single virus out in the wild for Macs in over a decade"?
Go the apple forums, search for the word virus over the last 90 days. There are hundreds of posts of people talking about email virus's emailing all their contacts and tons of other viruses. People commenting on they've already tried scanning with clamav and it still keep sending the virus attachments out. Now, please stop for a moment and notice that they have already scanned with an anti-virus software application. Why would companies continue to make anti-virus software or people owning macs purchase such software if there really had been no viruses with in the last decade?
That's like suggesting that if all the pests which attacked crops disappeared for 10 years, farmers would still be buying an applying pesticides to crops to prevent those 'pents' that dont exist from attacking the crops? It would be a waste of money, illogical and doesn't make sense less that farmer was very gullible buying into pesicide company propaganda or a ravid fanboy supporting the use of pesticides.
Please please think before you form an opinion and post Rawhead. It won't hurt after the first few times you try.
Ahhh, it's the ol' "virus" play. Man they always like to use this don't they? I wonder what would happen when Apple finally gets that huge market share and people start to write viruses for all the security holes that OS X can possibly have.
The difference between these commercials and It's a PC ad's, is that the It's A PC shows actual hardware specs that you do get pretty good bang for your budget. This commercial really proves nothing, and any PC owner should already know how to take care of a computer and they will never get viruses. My mom has had a computer for about 4-5 years, don't know a thing about them but uses them to search for game tips for her X360 and PS2. She knows where to go to trusted sites and not to click on BS that will cause issues.
Secondly, Apple is playing on the fears and incompetence of people about Viruses and "It just works" BS.
i ranked you up because your mom plays video games
why is it that with almost every one of these ads the only "winning" argument that makes her want a mac is the virus thing? does that really sound fair? seems fishy to me :\
ECKS DEE!
"Yeah, that's right. Windows rules - High Five!"
reply fail.
I own a Mac and have gotten viruses...
Apple should stop lying
Really? That's amazing. What virus, how did it affect your system, and where did it come from?
:P High rank fail, anyone who knows anything about computers knows that Macs are susceptible to trojans, but not viruses, so you should take your own advice.
In case you don't know the difference, a trojan is something you download and give rights to your computer (either by not setting a password or by giving it to the installer/program in question). A virus is something that installs itself (usually when you are on an untrustworthy website or download a P2P file of some kind), then wreaks havoc on your computer of its own accord.
By the by, I know how to get any comment ranked up to highest in under 100 minutes using one computer, so I take your high ranking with a grain of salt, and offer another to anyone reading my comment (which is likely quite low ranked for daring to state tech facts that don't work in favor of Microsoft's fanboys). :P
uhh...big mistake from apple with this commercial..
ps: i have Windows 7 with no antivirus and no viruses..
and the last year i didn't use any antivirus and i had no viruses..
so..apple should really find another 'bug' in pc's...
Window 7
Widow 7
Wdw 7
W7
Feels like an Arby's night.
So that ad basically said nothing about the Mac, then. Just "lol pcz r teh sux!111!11111" and the unstated implication that Macs were somehow better....
Please Apple, move on. This is getting very old. What next - the soup Nazi.
Why don't they make a commercial talking about Snow Leopard's new features. Oh ya - there isn't any new features.
