7-inch Magellan RoadMate 1700 slips out to retailers

Well, Magellan itself may not be saying much about it just yet, but it looks like company's new RoadMate 1700 nav unit is doing its best to make itself known, with it now showing up for order on at least a few retailer's websites. The big selling point with this one, as you might have surmised, is its spacious 7-inch widescreen display, which gets paired with a number of other features right in line with Magellan's other recent RoadMate offerings. That includes complete maps of the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, built-in AAA TourBook listings, six million points of interest, text-to-speech, and a microSD card slot for expansion, among other standard fare. No firm word on a release date, but Best Buy is estimating availability between September 14th and 21st, and currently has it listed for $299.99.

Did you recently get a speeding ticket for doing 88 in a parking lot?
Too easy.
As a matter of fact this article no longer exists, by exists I mean found on Engadgets main page. It was there then pooof, Gone! Just like that...
In before this story officially appears again.

7 inch wow
that's what she said
I love magellan.. Their GPS is so right, sexy and not expensive. I don't really like tomtom at all.
i doubt magellan was a 7 incher. wishful thinking
Anyone wish to explain why these GPS are longer than they are tall? Do I really need to see so far to the side of where I'm going? Wouldn't this GPS, for example, be more useful showing me more of what I'm driving towards as opposed to driving by? Maybe it can be tilted to do so?
I realize, making them look like little TVs may be more appealing to the average shopper, and if you use them to view media, etc. but for it's basic function - showing me where I'm going, I think it misses the mark.
i've got igo8 running on my widescreen mio, and the widescreen format is great since they use the left column to display useful information such as current speed, speed limit, next two turns, etc. i've never used a magellan, so i'm not sure if that applies here as well.
I noticed this "feature" listed on the Best Buy page:
"Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery with up to 1 hour of battery life."
1 hour? That really sucks.
But it probably comes with a dc power attachment for your car, which means that you never have to worry.
I spent a lot of time researching expert and user reviews on this model's smaller brothers and I was fully convinced i was going to buy one. Then I tested one and realized how bad they suck at basic things. The complex things it can do better than other brands, but the core of what a GPS should be totally sucked ass in the Magellans. I chose a Garmin instead.
Magellan sucks at basic things? Could you elaborate? I've considered Magellan. But don't really know much about them.
big...big screen...but is there free fm traffic?
Right now it doesn't appear to be traffic-compatible. There will probably be a traffic accessory to add; Magellan would be pretty stupid if they don't even make traffic available!
"7 incher...slipping out."
It's getting hot over at Engadget!! ;-)
I wonder what the screen resolution is...
why? theres no need for a gps that large. all you need to know is where to turn and when
Magellan - RoadMate 1700 7" is more for Truckers and RV's
