What's a company like Corsair to do to follow up its Extreme Series
X32, X64 and X128 SSDs? A new Extreme Series X256 model for starters. Joining the company's equally spacious
P256 and
S256 SSD drives, this one offers some of the fastest read speeds yet with promised rates up to 240MB/s, along with write speeds up 170MB/s, 64MB of cache memory (or half that of the P256), and the one-two punch of Indilinx's Barefoot controller and Samsung's MLC NAND flash memory at the heart of the drive. Still no official word from Corsair on a price, but it looks to already be selling for just under $700.
I only want two of 'em.
I'm not greedy...just broke. :|
Only two of them? And you're broke? What?
As opposed to five of 'em for a full blown-out RAID array?
By comparison it makes two look hella cheap! :D
Just upgraded my EEE PC netbook to a 120 GB OCZ Agility, added Windows 7, and I could not be happier with it.
What if it was a 256GB? 512GB?
Would you be sadder then?
If he's only using 80GB or so, yeah, he'd probably be sadder because he's broker.
Win7 + Office 2007 + other assorted OS-related stuff weighs in at less than 15 GB. That leaves Approx 90 GB for DivX, MP3s, JPGs, CBTs, etc. Good 'Nuff.
I just put a Corsair SSD in my Mac Book Pro...Running OS X and Windows 7...amazed at the speed. Somewhere, once upon a time, when someone thought up a computer this is exactly what they had in mind!
When I double click an icon the program is loaded almost before I am done with the second click...It's like it read my mind (uh oh).
64GB OCZ Vertex boot drive in new Core i7 workstation at work. Unbelievably fast! Best upgrade I've ever done..
call me when they are affordable.
ditto, but with the X512
Yeah, I'll be waiting on affordability + the auto-defrag firmware to keep the drive in tip-top shape before I splurge.
ssds are random access, so defragging wouldn't make a difference at all, except wearing down the drive faster.
I think I'll just get a 12-way RAID 0 Raptor setup going, and save a little bit of money.
wow that must be kinda noisy though
Not to mention that it will burn your house down.
That would be really stupid. If you want blazing fast, just get two 64GB OCZ Vertex in RAID0.
If these are going for around 700 the P256 should be coming down in price (its currently around 700 as well). Hopefully a good amount gets knocked off the P256s.
Uhm .. this one is avalible over here in europe for ages ..
Ages? LOL

Or, just get a 256GB Crucial M225 - they're cheaper and just as fast, if not faster.
Btw, I've just got my 128GB Crucial M225!! :D
how is it treating you? I wanted to get one but they sold out, i think i'll wait till around christmas now to get an SSD.
It's simply amazing - on a top-end computer, the difference is like the difference between a Bugatti Veyron and a Eurofighter! My friends balk at the price I've paid for it, but I don't regret a single penny spent.
i'd buy that for a dollar
that's what she said!
Only at MacDonald!
Sweet, under $3/GB, but just barely.
i'll buy another p256 with twice the cache thanks.
I'll be honest, I didn't even read this the first several times I checked Engadget today- I just don't care about SSD's much anymore. I know they're fast, I know they are cool, but I can't afford them, so I don't care fool!
I agree. I'll start caring about them when their capacity is in the terabytes and hard drives are becoming a thing of the past due to SSD's kickassatude. Also, them not wearing out after so many read/write cycles would be nice too. Every time I buy a computer I want it to last at least 10 years into the apocalypse and the apocalypse doesn't have a replacement parts store!
Why are SSD still so damn expensive? Most new technology get a huge drop off in price within a year. SSD have been around for over a decade, yet their prices have barely dropped. What's the hold up?
