Video: Nokia 5230 touchscreen seen lagging the competition
Ok S60 5th edition fans, here you go: another touchscreen Nokia slate to admire before it could be leaked by Eldar Murtazin. The new 5230 brings a 3.2-inch touchscreen riding HSDPA data, A-GPS, 2 megapixel camera, microSD expansion, and Bluetooth 2.0 with the promise of 33 hours of music pumped over its 3.5-mm audio jack. It will launch in two flavors in Q4: a €149 model and €259 Comes with Music version. Backside pic and video demonstrating the importance of long pink finger nails for navigating its resistive touchscreen after the break.
Note to Nokia: you really should review your marketing videos more carefully unless the severe lag / unresponsiveness seen when scrolling at 36 seconds is a feature.

Ignoring the possible lag for a mo (the evidence is hardly conclusive). This phone really is outrageously good value. The amount of kit you get for €149 is amazing.
It's funny how Engadget doesn't even point out how 149€ is a remarkably low price for an unsubsidised touchscreen smartphone.
Guys, THIS is why Nokia has such a high marketshare - both in regular phones and smartphones. Nokia has the economies of scale to spin off incredibly powerful phones very cheaply. Two years ago this kind of spec would have set you back 499€.
My iphone 3G lags all the time...
Which is of course why there exists a 3GS in the first place.
But engadget never mentioned in the headline of the 3G anything about lagging, so why only for nokia?
And this nokia isnt even competing with high end devices...
Why the hate engadget?
Engadget simply hates this phone because of the green Safari icon.. I agree with you, €149 is crazy cheap!
iphone commercials showed the phone doing all sorts of things at ridiculous speeds. later they were taken to court for false advertisement. i have a iphone 3g and it lags like crazy. at least here they are showing the phones true speeds.
I have played with the 3G and 3GS and they lag as well - nothing like the fake adverts Apple churn out.
So why no criticism there? Money hats perhaps?
That's why Apple has 30% of smartphone profits with 13% market share: they don't care to make cheap crap.
Sure, then something better comes along and because there's only one model and the demand drops off no carrier will subsidise it to the current degree and it dies an ignoble death.
yeah, my iPhone 3G has been MUCH slower since 3.0. Safari has also started crashing with some regularity. sometimes Safari will lock up for 10 seconds, free itself, then lock up again a few seconds later only to exit. grr.
WTF are you guys talking about cheap? This ain't cheap when one could get an iPhone 3G
for $99. No match for iPhone with 65K apps along with iTunes ecosystem. End of story!
That would be $99 plus the two year $70 a month contract which is available on precisely one network, right?
Obvious troll is obvious.
I would not call that sever lag...more like mild lag. Also, that had to be some of the worst music my ears have ever heard.
Its even not real lag. The screen has hard time to understand dragging when using your nail. Some problem in 5800. Try with finger, works every time.
What I don't like here is the thumb ring. Otherwise phone is great.
I agree, the music gives it an amateurish local business commercial feel.
no one can beat the price for that funcions
I agree, this has higher res screen than iPhone.
LG KP500 (Cookie) does come close.
However, if this thing had Wi-Fi i would be back on the Nokia bandwagon so fast.
I really do not need a 8 mega pixel camera nor blazing fast processor just a touch screen PHONE (requires 3G) with a screen reasonable enough to occasionally load a movie onto, and of course Wi-Fi to cut down those mobile internet costs.
Do nokia have a design team any more? Or were they all laid off because they have been rehashing the same crap for the past 3 years.
I considered the nokia 5800 when i was looking for a new phone but what turned me off was the lack of future support and the nasty choice of build materials.
This looks exactly the same except now i can get a cheap and nasty phone trying to imitate an upmarket smartphone in all the colours of the rainbow.
As much as i hate to admit it Samsungs many offerings are more palatable than Nokias.
Ahh..the nails!
Is this the one which Eldar from Mobile Review was telling about?
Do you have to switch off the GPS before answering a call?
Why would it have to do that? Why would any phone have to do that?
Because the lack of multitasking on the iPhone = true fail!!
I suppose they would care what Thomas thinks if they didn't outsell everybody else.
But they do so they don't.
Ah Nokia, yet another underpowered slow UI with unresponsive resistive touch screen. You've made gajillions of phones, yet you have yet to master the design of usable UI. I'm really loosing faith in Nokia. Even the ZuneHD's UI is waaaaay more usable than this.
Nokia, if you cannot design a usable touch UI, stick with buttons ala the E7x and E5x series.
2megapixel cam , and its the size of my g1 and doesnt have a slide out keyboard. It would be have to be cheap for anyone to want it. Something just to listen to music on and say you have a touch screen
Well then it's a good thing it actually is cheap.
I wonder what Thomas Ricker and all other resistive-equals-crap guys are telling us when Apple releases that tablet with resistive screen...
That price is pretty much unbeatable. And frankly, I don't give a crap if it lags a bit with that kind of value for money.
Nice phone.
Good point for the 3.5-mm audio jack, but this phone is way too fat to fit comfortably in a pocket.
Also, the 2MP camera is soo nineties... Even Apple eventually moved on with the 3GS.
It's outrageous that Nokia's promotial videos might show how their phones work in real life. Don't do that! Show us an animation where I check my location, emails and facebook updates in 4 seconds while typing a few sms's at the same time.
Isn't that patented by Apple?
Ahaha.
Still on a more serious point of view : this video is really ok but WHERE THE F*UCK IS THIS CRAP MUSIC COMING FROM ?
Please Nokia don't you pay someone to choose this music ? plus what's with the nine inch pink nails ?
Still this phone looks like a really great deal !
Hmm... same size as 5800....means that the screen are bigger than 5530...
trades the Wi-Fi functionality of its bigger brother(5530) for 3G and built-in GPS.....
5800 has everything....but i like the 5530 design.... :(
Note to Engadget: you really should review your facts before claiming that this video is from Nokia's marketing team. Unless that ignorance is a feature.
Though, totally agree with the lagging and them showcasing it.
Uh, http://www.youtube.com/user/NokiaConversations
That doesn't mean that their marketing team made the video.
The claws!!!
THE CLAWS!!!!
Looks very unprofessional for an official Nokia marketing video, assuming it is one in the first place.
It's like my 5800, with a new great firmware, and half the price!!! 149€ unsubsidized!! it's crazy!
If I didn't already had the 5800, I'd buy that.
or seeing that she was using her nails maybe that had to do something with it.
I have had an N97 for about a month, and while I was far from happy with it in the beginning, now, with all the new updates , new roms, new thems, and some hours of tweaking and twisting ,(more than one over the air update a day for the past two weeks, the last just today) it has become a real killer machine.
I also have an HTC Hero (which I managed to get a couple of weeks ago in exchange of the vey disappointing iPhone 3GS) and my beloved, old HTC touchHD, but the N97 has now become my favorite phone.
So happy in fact that I decided to exchange it with the N900 as soon as it comes out and probably , once win7 finally makes it into the new machines, get one of the new Nokia booklets instead of the Samsung N310 with which I planned to substitute my rapidly aging MSI Wind.
It seems to me that Nokia , maybe warned by the sorry fate of Sony Ericcson , mended its ways quite successfully in a remarkable short time.
I
That video is obviously fron the future judging from all the crazy crap on the woman's fingers and wrist.
Moreover , the first icon on the left is the S60 icon for the FM sender, which if it still is there in the final version would make this thing even more unique in its price range.
How did the engadget gay trolls turn this into an iPhone debate (yet again)?. You don´t even own an iPhone so just shut your mouths.
btw. this nokia phone is SO bruno!!!.
Yet so damn cheap and filled with goodies :)
Engadget - AGAIN proven to show us how applefanboycrazy you are - all of you dont seem to realise what you get for that small price!
This has value written all over it! I cant wait to get one for my daughter - this is affordable! Way to go nokia!
sad sad engadget! shame on you - stop hiding you applecraze, and admit it!
Actually, the article itself makes absolutely no mention of Apple or the iphone. Other commenters were the first to draw comparisons to the iphone.
Jesus, what's with the corny music?
Again, a thick-as-a-brick plastic tank by Nokia...
You expect to get 0,5cm thin full metal phone for 149€?
That's not lag, that's Symbian kicking in high gear.
I think the iPhone's touch screen is unmatched and the progress of other phones is good to see.
Said that, I do have to criticize Engadget's comments on the lagging display of the Nokia 5230. I think it is more user error than lagging hardware. While watching the video you can see the person operating it has long finger nails. If the screen is anything like the iPhone's you will know that the screen does not respond to fingernails, you have to touch it with your finger tip. I think Nokia just needs to pic male hand models to operate their touch screens to get away of any possible accidental non-responsive movement due to fingernail contact.
If you want the best....just buy an iPhone....
it's unfortunate that a phone this thick doesn't come with wi-fi, but i'm guessing these are targeted at China. Should sell like crazy. I'll wait till the 5800 drops to $200.
You're right... why not having Wifi... 3,5G, WiMax, GPS, an 8mpx camera, 3.5" capacitive screen, 36GB of rom, aliminium case... for 149 bucks ? I really reallly don't get that.
BTW : great move Nokia. You'll sell millions of those.
This phone is incredible for the price. Also, the use of 5800's design for an entry level phone means one important thing : it will be replaced very soon.
Ouch, the Nokia slide continues. Hopefully they figure out a way to pull back on the stick before they hit the ground.
I had the iPhone 3G. There was some lag. I've had the 3GS for a month now. No significant lag. I realize this Nokia is a lot cheaper than an iPhone. It shows.
Yo just don't get it do you.
Let me explain:
Your iPhone ,if you're British, cost you £185 and a £35 a month contract for 18 months if you want the standard 16GB package. This will cost you £140 on PAYG so you can use it on a £15-20 month to month contract on any Network - and if you use O2 that'll include unlimited intarwebs - you're free to bin it and move at any point with no strings attached.
So, for a phone that'll do 90% of what the iPhone will 90% as well you're going to pay about half the price.
Am I getting through to you? These are going to sell millions just like the 5800 has sold millions. If you think Nokia are 'sliding' you clearly - like a lot of people here - don't know what their strategy is.
Note to Engadget: Keep sucking palm's and apple's _______
Thomas Ricker is visiting Finland and walks up to a door marked pull.
He pushes the door and wonders why it wont open.
Chris Ziegler is on the other side laughing at him.
Sorry, but what a dumb piece Thomas Ricker. Just dumb.
Based on an honest (not edited to death) zero budget preview clip you judge this device in the headline as "lagging the competition". Yeah, like the competition never stutters. Never ever. And like all there ever is to compete for is the fluency of operation. It would have been ok if you'd just stick to criticizing Nokia for letting out such an amateurish video of a brand new phone but you decided to judge the device wholly in the headline. There's a difference.
Moreover, you imply that this IYHO POS phone could ever only appeal to Nokia fan boys ("Ok S60 5th edition fans..."). Like.. who the fudge else would even take a glance at this?
"Severe lag / unresponsiveness". Honestly... severe? You say this based an a total amateur shot (doesn't make a difference it's released in Nokia Conversations) in which a person fiddles it with FINGERNAIL for mere seconds.
I'm getting a bit pumped up I know, but it's getting quite frustrating to notice how Engadget seems to time and time again have a preset opinion about devices with a certain brand or certain technologies. For certain brands you highlight only the pros, for certain only the cons it seems.
Luckily the audience is wiser.
Is it just me or is that video purposefully 80's? So very, very 80's.
Nokia just can't get this right! I HATE YOU!
Nokia has got it right! Its an appealing phone for lower/mid segment with a lot of features that its competition is not
offering at this price. The OS is same as others like 5800 (highest selling phone after iphone 3GS), 5530.
So you will find lot of support and apps for this phone too.
Engadget has got it wrong this time, they are not doing fair comparison, which is common.
By 'not getting it right' you mean 'sell millions', right?
Clueless troll is clueless.
No, by that I mean releasing a touchscreen smartphone that actually works. All their touchphones are crap compared to the iPhone and Pre, because they have legacy S60 software pimped with some shitty touchscreen UI displayed on a legacy resistive touchscreen. It's just sad.
And that's why I hate Nokia's latest "achievements" so much; they made some great stuff back in the days, so why is it that the largest cellphone manufacturer in the world can't get this straight even the 15th (?) time? It's embarrasing.
Sure they're so bad they outsell the iPhone in every region except the US where Nokia doesn't have a presence.
See, no-one really cares that much about the iPhone's UI outside the US where the mobile phone industry is shit.
another brick phone! nokia doesnt get it, its not the specs that matters its the overall experience! and a lagging phone/OS is no way to reach that goal. If this promotional video is showing how the phone is a lagger, imagine if your using it everyday! sure you get 30 hours + of music, but maybe in reality its 15 hours for real music and 15 hours for waiting due to the laggy software!
I have had iphone 2G/3G and now 3GS, My friend have 5800 that i have played with and comparing the lag between even 2G and 5800 is huge.
On iPhone everything floats with some hacks now and then but on Nokia 5800 it is slow all over with bad lags so comparing iphone to Nokia phones is simply not gone be fair since Nokia losses by allot in my personal opinion.
I dont think S60 will ever be able to compete with iPhone OS but this is my opinion.
On the other hand i think the price of this model is very very lucrative for people not willing to pay the expensive price (lets face it iphone is expensive) for an iphone. So i can see a big market for cheap smart phones like this.
Although i wish Nokia can come out with a nice OS of their own (linux based or perhaps Android even) to give the iphone a good competition.
