HTC Touch Pro2 looking good for September 8 launch on Sprint
Aiming a cameraphone at a computer monitor conveniently displaying names, dates, and prices of upcoming products always seems to end in sweet, sweet leakage, doesn't it? New shots over at SprintUsers are showing some low-end noise in the mix like an orange Rumor 2 and a pair of Sammies apparently too lowly to get actual names, but the real news has to be that the long-awaited Touch Pro2 (Sprint should know better than to question HTC's wisdom in nixing the space between "Pro" and "2" here) looks finalized for a September 8 launch. We wouldn't freak out at the $599.99 retail price, necessarily -- bear in mind that's a totally unsubsidized, rebate-free price that few customers will actually be paying.
Interestingly, the screencap is accompanied by a PDF identified as an internal "Quick Reference Brief" for the Touch Pro2; part of the doc includes a comparison chart that pits the phone against AT&T's LG Monaco and HTC Warhawk along with Verizon's Omnia II, all phones that have yet to be released. Wondering where they'd get the lowdown on unannounced competitive hardware? Us, it turns out -- zoom in on the chart for a good look at a super low-res Engadget logo watermarked across the Warhawk. You're most welcome, Sprint -- buy us a drink sometime and we're square.

The tp2 is marketed to bitter end and I'm frankly tired of it. It's already obsolete with the anticipating for new HTC models. Getting it now would give up on snapdragon and tegra devices about to be release next year.
"Getting it now would give up on snapdragon and tegra devices about to be release next year."
You forget that there are people who snatch up every phone just because it's new.
I'm definitely moving from AT&T to Sprint. They are getting all the awesome HTC phones. Trying to decide between a Hero and a Pre.
Be careful what you wish for. No bashing here but Sprint doesn't have good coverage. I went to Yosemite Park
and my ATT phone gets plenty signal there but my friend's sprint phone had no service. :)
Maybe, but how often does one really go to Yosemite Park? I mean, you're not going to go there every day for lunch, right?
Me, OTOH, go home every day and every day it's a crap shoot if I have an AT&T signal in my house or not.
The 14-line business account I manage has 3 eligible upgrades right now, and more will be up by the time a new one launches. Haven't even had my TP a year yet....TP2 here I come!
And no, I don't feel any remorse for the people stuck with a 2 year old Blackberry. They're overpaid morons as it is.
For those of us on VZW, there isn't much choice. Plus I currently have the original Motorola Q which has a multitude of issues lately (horrible battery life, freezing, crashing, etc). I for one am looking forward to upgrading my phone. Unfortunately I can't wait until next year for the Pre.
Frostblade10
ATT will get the TouchPro2 shortly after Sprint. There isn't an exclusivity agreement with Sprint on this one.
The keyboard will be altered slightly though (just like the Tilt and TouchPro).
@ Steward "I went to Yosemite Park and my ATT phone gets plenty signal there but my friend's sprint phone had no service."
Who the fuck needs service in Yosemite National Park? Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery for cripe's sake
My problem is that I've been holding out FOREVER now, waiting to upgrade my totally fail Touch. I cannot wait to get rid of this POS. I was very excited about the TP2, but now that I've had a glimpse of what Tegra can do, and spent a bit more face time with an iPhone and a Pre...yeah. I'm not sure I want to drop $400+ for what is already well outdated internals.
Maybe if they'd released the phone on Sprint when other carriers outside the US did, but now? I'm half tempted to get a cheap crappy flip phone to fill the gap between my current heap of garbage and a device with some real potential.
I'm an inch away from just getting an iPhone, but the lack of tethering is an extreme downside for me. And I'm not sure I'm willing to spring for a data card for my laptop considering I'll already be paying through the nose for the phone's data plan.
Sigh....the US cell market could use a new player with an idea of what value and time-to-market means.
Was this proofread? Is there such a thing as an editor at Engadget?
These questions will forever remain a mystery :-)
Hey, it's really late here! Fixed.
But to answer your question, most of our writing staff are editors -- the buck stops here. There isn't time in newsy blogging for a traditional editorial cycle. In the end, it makes us faster to get news out and easier to find the right person to blame when something (like this) goes horribly awry. Win/win.
And editors should always thank tipsters. :)
I like the part of the PDF that says
"For Internal Use Only. Distribution of this document to any individual not employed by Sprint Nextel, not an Authorized Representative
of Sprint Nextel or to any unauthorized organization is strictly prohibited. Violation of this restriction could result in penalties up to
and including termination of your employment by or your agreement with Sprint Nextel."
Thanks for the info whomever posted this, sorry to see you terminated.
Sprint probably leaks this stuff on purpose, but regardless, snide assholes like you are a cancer on the earth.
It appears that it's going to be direct sales only and not available in physical stores?
I agree. The Touch Pro 2 was OBSOLETE......BEFORE it even was released.
It has the SAME basic specs as the Touch Pro.
The only thing you get with the TP2 is a larger screen and QWERTY,
BUT that is in exchange for it's heavy weight and size.
After demoing the TP2 last month, I don't think it's worth getting over the TP.
It should have NEVER been called the Touch Pro 2 in the first place.
The TP2 is no upgrade.
too bad it weighs just a little bit less than the TP. Reports everywhere are confirming that everything is indeed running faster, smoother, and snappier on the new phone. Jokes on you pal.

lo-res zoomed in logos for warhawk + omnia ii for your enjoyment ;)
Nice catch chris with the engadget logos... this late at night and those tiny pixels it just amazes me how you find these details
Can someone explain what a "direct ship" launch means to the average consumer? My old mogul is extremely damaged, screen cracked in a million places, and I've been avoiding paying $100 insurance deductable to get it replaced specifically waiting for the TouchPro2 to be available at Sprint. Am I going to be able to obtain this phone on September 8th, or will it not be available in stores until long after? T-Mobile was pretty specific on their launch date.
Also, is there any reason why Sprint hasn't acknowledged they will be selling this phone? No pre-orders or "coming soon" on the website or in the stores. They had huge displays and demos for the Palm Pre a month before it became physically available.
Wake me up when the Android phones arrive in October.
In most cases the Pre was marketing to fight the iphone (same with the G1, Blackberry), so you saw a lot more advertisement on the social level, but this phone is more upper-class/business solution oriented, making the market sector smaller thus producing less money by spamming "LOOK @ ME" adds. While it might not be your cup of tea, this phone is basically a net-book + phone + PDA, so the price of 200-300$ after contract renewal is negligible at that rate. And don't quote me, but I've heard you can get "free" tethering for windows mobile phones that support usb 2.0 for you laptop users on the go. Best screen on the market for viewing websites, and the new updated Touch Flow 3D UI makes the phone very finger friendly.
With the SAME old processor and memory, the TP2 is NO netbook.
It's a just a Touch Pro with a SLIGHTLY bigger screen and keyboard.
In exchange for the slightly bigger keyboard/screen, you have to accept the more weight and more bulk.
The TP2 is no netbook.
The TP2 is no upgrade.
The new "Miscrosoft Pink" phone (Zune HD phone) and upcoming 1ghz MS phones are the only options worth upgrading for.
It is an upgrade for those of us who want to buy it and actually see the potential. For mogul user's it is an upgrade. You see what you want to see. Again, jokes no you pal.
Hopefully the Sprint TP2 will have FM radio enabled, along with extra camera options, like burst and gps-tagging.
What do BP and DS mean?
What about the Touch Diamond 2 or Whitestone? Are those coming or not?
When is the LEO / Firestone launching?
When Sprint indicates the Touch Pro 2 will be available for 'DIRECT SHIP' on Sept 8, or whenever, what exactly doe that mean? Does that mean I must buy the phone online, and that it is not available in stores? If I must buy online, what online sellers do you guys suggest I use?
Thanks
Doug
