Nokia N900 running Maemo 5 officially €500 in October (update: Video!)
In backwards order, Nokia has finally launched the N900 after we've already seen a review and countless leaks. Nevertheless, it's good to have the new Maemo 5 Internet Tablet out in the open and official-like. The specs include a 3.5-inch 800x480 pixel (resistive) touchscreen, sliding QWERTY, 32GB of on-board storage expandable to 48GB via microSD, GPS/A-GPS, FM transmitter, TV-out, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi, 1320mAh battery, and 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash. Better yet, this monster MID brings the power of the ARM Cortex-A8, up to 1GB of application memory, and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration to make quick work of polygons and what Nokia promises will be a "PC-like experience on a handset-sized device." It also brings a Mozilla-based Maemo browser with Adobe Flash 9.4 support. As expected, it'll be on display at Nokia World next week before this quad-band GSM/EDGE, 900/1700/2100MHz UMTS/HSPA handset heads to select markets in October for €500 (pre tax and pre carrier subsidy). And by the looks of that 1700MHz band, this baby's heading to T-Mobile USA.
Update: Videos added after the break.
Update: Videos added after the break.

They could've used the BP-4L, the 1500mAh li-poly found in the E71, N97 and others... I agree, what's with the slight shrinking?
Oh my goodness this is coming to T-Mobile?
My G1 is looking ancient now. Must resist....love my Android....WHY MUST YOU DO THIS TO ME NOKIA DAMN YOU!!!
looks sweet if only I wasn't in a contract for another year.
Am I the only one who noticed the Transmission icon on his desktop?
Is he torrenting from this device?
Yes.
anyone forget about the capacitive-stylus HTC is patenting?
want... now... please...
...and the winner is: Nokia N900.
I cannot believe that the launch of this extraterestrial device (did the green men from Mars dropped it in Finland ?) is so soon in October after not even rumors and details were announced. Let's see what Nokia World next week brings.
So please developers: think and don't hesitate to switch to the right OS, so I can download more stunning apps after I get one in coming december !
Looks great and this is going to be my next Nokia after my trust N95 8GB.
Thought the N97 was not for me but this looks great
Was a little disappointed that there is no Compass on it.... need it to play in augmented reality land!
Nice nice!
I am sick of hearing people say "It needs capacitive" "Well other then the inferior touch screen experience" "Junk without capacitive screen" crap. Nokia realizes that there is a very large market segment that doesn't want a damn capacitive screen. A screen that only works with your fingers is worthless for so many people all over the world that use a variety of input devices better suited to the applications they run.
Now, in attempting to scroll in super tiny increments with my finger on my 5800XM.. yes, a capacitive screen like the one on my Iphone would be nice, but to be honest with you, resistive has come such a long way that you know those soft draw strings on the end of pajama pants? I am able to use those things to select menu items and type out a text (I don't know what made me try lol). So obviously with a day or so of practice you can easily do 99% of the functions many of you think can "only" be done on a capacitive Iphone screen.
I'll take being able to use precise input devices and using my phone with gloves on over more accurate finger navigation for now (although 3 years ago, resistive would have been a big turn off for me). These resistive screens have come a long way in terms of finger accuracy, I think many current capacitive phone owners had some bad experiences in the past and are assuming (falsely) there have been no improvements in the resistive screens since then.
Nokia didn't become the worlds biggest cellphone OEM by pandering to conformists, middle class wanna-be elitists with credit cards and yuppies, they did it by targeting the business market, and with each generation, they are getting closer and closer to having a true mobile productivity platform. Big screen, keyboard = Mobile Office and PDF apps.. so yeah, try using your fingers vs a stylus when formatting an excel sheet and you'll understand why I had to retire the Iphone 3g for now.
This phone just needs to come to ATT (they're 3G is super fast in Tampa, and T-mobile is non-existent here unfortunately).
I'm in on the ground floor, Nokia. Maemo was solid on my N800, and I hope it's just as good here.
This is everything the N97 should've been.
ahhh i cant wait, this will definitely be my next major purchase
This is cool. The Maemo UI video above is fantastic. If it is fast enough in reality,(ofcz not as in video), then it will beat the hell
out of all others. This is great, unfortunately, i won't be able to get one, as already locked to AT&T for 2 yrs, before 3 months and also bought 5800.
So i will have to wait for the next Maemo device after couple years.
i have a 5800 also but idc im getting this lol
good condition nokias hold their resell value
or it would make an excellent backup phone, pmp, gift, etc
bye bye iPhone =D
me likey!!!!
It has transmission!
Sold.... well... android has it too....
still awesome!
Death to symbian! (or something slightly less dramatic)
I've always loved Nokia hardware, its about time they got a decent OS to go with it.
Great potential, do want. Form, function, and pretty sexy to boot. Also gotta love those example text chats these marketing departments come up with...
You: Hey Jon, How are you?
Jon: I've just been training people how to do Parkour
You: Holy $G&$, you're way too cool for Nokia, you must have an iPhone.
I just jizzed in my pants...
Why do iGirlie's think capacitive is actually any good because Steve said so... LOL
This phone has USB host meaning you will have the capabilities of a computer. Plug a mouse, keyboard, external hard drive etc.
your get usb host on current offerings (n800, n810). But can't wait for the TV out too.
The OS looks too cluttered....
@Nathan, is it not the whole point to have a user friendly interface? i use an iphone and i think the icon size is just perfect. Its good to have standard size for this kind of things in my opinion.
Other then that i think this might be the first phone from nokia who can actually compete with iPhone seriously. Symbian phones are simply not made for touchscreens. They do work but not as good as iPhone or Android phones.
Also the spec certainly looks amazing, specially the codec support and the cpu powerhouse + the linux based core.
It remains to be seen how the final product works in my hand. And also if the community will make appz for it in the same way as they do for iphone today.
Looking forward for some competition for even though i love my iPhone i still think competition only benefit us consumers.
Its Maemo, you can have the icons any shape and size you want.
Looks seriously sweet. Gotta say though, I was burned by the N800. Man that thing is a pile of doodie. As someone else said, once bitten, twice shy. But.. I wanna believe. I do.
Linux based, multi-tasking, multiple desktops, Mozilla browser, 5MP camera, high res WVGA, speed, Skype etc etc.
iPhone is well and truly OWNED!
