Sony's announcement of the three
Alpha line cameras just came today -- but we're already
seeing plenty of them.
Pocket Lint's got a fairly extensive hands-on with the Alpha 500, which boasts an Exmor CMOS 12.3-megapixel sensor, an ISO range of up to 12,800, with a four frames per second continuous shooting. It also packs an HDR shooting mode, and an HDMI output. The Alpha 500 will be out in October, and it will run you $750. There's one more shot after the break -- hit the read link for the full set.
HAWT!
YAY! it doesnt have the messed up grip sony put on its other dslrs.
That thing drove me nuts>.
They purposely messed up the lower end model to differentiate teh mid range model
"an ISO range of up to 12,800"
Is that really necessary?
12,800 is just 2 stops from 3200. If it could do it well, I'd take it because I love shooting in existing light.
I agree with Dave though I doubt it is any useful at 12800 iso though technology continues to get better in the years. I always go with the notion that 1 stop below what they say it is capable of is actually the max that its useful at. So for this camera ISO 6400 should be pretty useful.
@Steven.K
I w/you on that one
Nikon D700s, which have been out for a long time, can do ISO 25,600, with ISO 6400 about max for usability.
Crazy ISO is usually pointless, except for those times when you're forced to use available light, and getting *some* picture is better than getting *no* picture.
Hmm, no video? Perhaps Sony is still afraid that it'll encroach on camcorder sales, unlike Canon. That and the fact that lenses for this mount are not plentiful (Minolta) or way expensive (Sony), makes it a real questionable investment, compared to its competitors. And it's a Sony for crying out loud... you'll be gouged on every single purchase.
@solmar
where can I get this nikon d700s? Do you even know what you're talking about?
I have never had problems with finding minolta glass. Prices for Sony lenses are comparable to offerings from nikon and canon. Canon usually the cheapest and nikon the most expensive. Minus the fact Sony has a few holes in the line up, Sony is a very capable and vaiable system for the average shooter.
Hmm, what camera took the picture of that camera?
PARADOX... sort of...
Hmm, looks nice.
Man, you are so clueless! Sony has produce some nice lenses for its α lens mount, like 16-35/2.8, 24-70/2.8, ZA85/1.4, 135/1.8, 35/1.4 G, 70-200/2.8 G(this one even better than Canon's 70-200 IS and Nikon's 70-200 G-AFS), and Sony also has unique lenses like 135STF, and 500/8 RF, which is the only one AF 500RF lens in this world.
Why would ANYONE buy anything but a canon or nikon? The best lenses are what matter.. How can anyone let a body dictate their choices?
because Nikon and Canon are often spanked by the competition in the price range and they also make their fair share of junque. Choice: It's a wonderful thing.
